Non-binary colleague using disabled toilet

1000 replies

DefendingPan · 22/12/2024 10:14

Where I work there’s employee male and female toilets, customer male and female toilets and one customer disabled toilet.

This colleague is non-binary, is not disabled, and uses the disabled toilet/ baby change (with their own Radar key) because they “don’t feel comfortable) using either the male or female toilets.

I mentioned to my boss that I didn’t think this was appropriate and got accused of transphobia and threatened with discipline. I was made to feel like I was being offensive and discriminatory for bringing it up.

We have many elderly customers and many young families who all also need to use it.

Was I being unreasonable?

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie The only nastiness in this thread is that directed at disabled people.

Using an empty toilet to have a wee is really, really not the big deal you want it to be.

No, the bigger deal is being such a massive narcissist that you occupy a toilet made for people who need it (and urgently) and then claim discrimination. Ableist

WarmingClothesontheRadiator · 22/12/2024 13:38

Frankly I think your manager probably now see you as a troublemaker with too much time on her hands.

The manager probably feels compelled to placate the genderists due to edicts and ‘training’ by the company DEI division spreading unlawful interpretations of the law that undermines equality, but feels powerless to do anything about it.

Fraggeek · 22/12/2024 13:38

MissMoneyFairy · 22/12/2024 10:24

If they have a radar key they are entitled to use the toilet. For a few minutes a day does it really matter, are you the pee monitor.

Anyone can buy a radar key.

Sirzy · 22/12/2024 13:31

Except you using it when you don’t need it means it’s not empty when the person with a stoma leak comes along.

or when the adult with urgency issues can’t get to the toilet so has an accident.

Obviously if another person with a disability is using it you will have to wait but every person who uses it who isn’t disabled makes it that much harder for someone with disabilities to go out.

I haven’t said that I use disabled toilets. I don’t. I’ve said I have no problem with accessible toilets being used by others if disabled people aren’t using them. And in this particular case, the non binary colleague is perfectly within their rights to choose to do so.

Being gay isn't the same as declaring yourself non-binary.

For a lot of people it literally is, since many think being gay is a choice and it's all performative.

SlimmyShady24 · 22/12/2024 13:36

@DefendingPan Why do you care and make it your issue to raise? Let the people who are affected (if there are such people) make the complaint. Just focus on your own toilet trips.

FionaSkates · 22/12/2024 13:36

@DefendingPan The thread you posted last week where you wanted to know if it was unreasonable to be annoyed at being asked to be considerate of disabled people(!) is still going and today you have given us this gem.

What is going on with you and your feelings about where other people go to the toilet, particularly minority groups, which you seem to particularly resent?

OP sounds like a rat

You lose the argument when you stoop low.

Headinthesand21 · 22/12/2024 13:36

Scabetty · 22/12/2024 10:16

What would you suggest they do?

Unless they have an actual disability, stop this bonkers ‘non- binary’ attention seeking and use the right loo for the gender that they actually are.
It’s also selfish and blocks the disabled loo for the people who actually genuinely have no choice but to need it.

ueberlin2030 · 22/12/2024 13:35

Tsama · 22/12/2024 13:15

I remember in the old days when gays was all people whined about, nowadays gays are relatively accepted and protected, so gotta pile up on the next more vulnerable smaller group since whining about the gays isn't as popular or as accepted anymore.

Just make sure there's San pro bins in both though as I have experienced having ro wait for the correct "gender neutral" toilet to be available...

This is where I fear for the batshit nonsense we are all being subjected to and for the future for our poor kids! What you mean here is that you have to wait for the bloody ladies toilet as that is where the san pro bins are because, shock horror, women are the ones who have periods.

TinklySnail · 22/12/2024 13:33

Are you more pissed off about them being non binary or not disabled?
You appear less annoyed at the latter.

Surprised you're not more annoyed at the idea of a disabled toilet functioning as a baby changing room. When do disabled people get to use the facility if there are "many" elderly people (are they disabled?) and young families also using it.

The babies and elderly aren't non binary, so it's ok for them to use the disabled bathroom at the expense of disabled people.

They have bought a radar key. What are the terms attached to them buying it? If they're bought it they feel they comply.

I'd leave well alone. For so many reasons.

Anyone can buy one.

It's none of your business

She is an employee, not a member of the public. As such it absolutely is her business to ensure the service provided by her company doesn’t discriminate against disabled employees and customers.

It is irrelevant. There are plenty of posters on here happy to display their ableism, and ignorance by offering disabled facilities to all and sundry.

We're talking about OP situation, for her situation the person being disabled or not is literally the whole issue.

It's literally the relevant part.

Startingagainandagain · 22/12/2024 13:31
  • how does that affect you negatively? unless you are disabled yourself and have on many occasion had to wait to use the loo because they were using it, I really don't see why you have such a problem with it
  • why are you so certain they have no disabilities? not all disabilities are visible and many people choose not to disclose this type of Information to colleagues
  • I can completely understand why they feel they don't belong in either the male or female toilet
  • You seem have to have an issue with someone describing themselves as non binary. Even if you don't personally agree with the concept when at work you need to be professional and respect people from that point of view. Would you treat a trans or non-binary customer/client in a different, less favourable way? in which case you need to read up on equality and diversity policies...

Frankly I think your manager probably now see you as a troublemaker with too much time on her hands.

It isn’t whilst they (and everyone else you think should be entitled to use it) are occupying it.

What does it have to do with you? If customers complain, let them.
