Food and drink in theatre

Taking my Dd, 6, to The Nutcracker at the weekend. It states that there is no food or drink to be consumed. The show is 90 minutes long. Surely you can bring a bottle of water for children? (and I will need to take a small snack)

What have you done when taking Dc to see a show?

Not in the UK my arse.

As if the OP wouldn't mention that when asking 'surely it's ok?'

🙄

I’m not in the U.K.

🤣🤣🤣

Of course I didn’t, just wanted to shock the wannabe snobs with a stick up their….

It wasn’t in London, not even the uk.

I asked at the door if we could take Dds water in and a pack of mini croissants, they said of course.
We didn’t end up eating them, but shock horror, Dd had a few sips of water.

We had a wonderful time, with many other families enjoying themselves, some children even talking quietly and even gasping with delight at the show…pesky kids!

Sounds like it was a matinee performance, in which case you'd expect more kids.

I don’t need a drink or snack really, but surely they won’t stop a 6 year old having her water bottle in my bag? That seems crazy, bag searches do too

Why do you think bag searches are crazy?

NerrSnerr · 22/12/2024 18:32

I understand people's point about rustling but can I ask people what the issue is with children (or adults) in a theatre drinking from a water bottle (one I assume is already out of your bag and ready to drink?) I can't see how that's rude or a problem.

I saw someone upthread saying we're pandering to children by giving them water- I mean I'd understand if they were demanding coke or red bull.

Also, I remember primary school where the only drink I got all day was the small milk carton at lunch (even in the summer) and being so thirsty when I got home. Can't have been healthy.

MN is Uk based so unless you mention otherwise, of course people will tend to assume you’re in the UK and give advice/opinions accordingly.

Well at least no one was rustling or munching!

TriangleLight · 22/12/2024 15:38

Rustling- check
Crumbs- check

Very good, @Lookforthegoodthings

if a kid needs a drink, they need a drink

It's a theatre, not the Sahara. Tell them to wait. They will cope. If they can't, then you need to get much better at saying no or this will be the least of your problems.

Exactly.i've never seen such pandering to kids.

Mini croissants as a theatre snack 🙈

I’m assuming this is a pisstake

Nope. My dd has been ill and currently she only likes certain foods, mainly plain things.

What do you mean?

Your response to all the points made by those replying is sarcasm (I hope) about taking in lots of food and drink. I said in my previous post that I found you to be self entitled. You confirm it by your unwillingness to reflect on any of the points raised about theatre goers wanting and being entitled to, the opportunity to enjoy the production without selfish people spoiling it for them.

Nobody minded anything

I doubt that very much. They were just far more polite than you, and probably realised that you don’t know any better.

Fancy taking the smelliest junk food - sausage rolls and McDonalds - possible into a theatre! They were probably just shocked that anyone would be so uncouth and lacking in basic manners.

And no wonder this country has an obesity problem.

aliceinawonderland · 22/12/2024 14:39

Probably too polite.

Was this in London??

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle
Why are you being so rude?
People were saying that if you go to the toilet mid way through the performance you won't be let back in.

I said even if you need to wait until the interval or a suitable time during the performance they will eventually let you back in. They don't throw you out.

Reading it back I was commenting out of context, which, however as a PP pointed out, was changed by you.

RaraRachael · 22/12/2024 13:32

I was at Les Mis and had end of row seats. People were coming in and out willy nilly (Aberdeen arena is notoriously bad for this). In the middle of a very poignant song a woman came clumping up the steps. People's lack of manners astound me

Hey? If a 6 year old needs a wee, they won’t let us back in? This all seems so over the top. I don’t remember it being like this years ago

Have you actually ever been to the theatre before? There’s a performance going on, which all the people there will have paid good money for. Neither they, nor the performers, want anyone wandering in and out to use the toilet, slurping from bottles or rustling sweets. It’s not your front room and the world doesn’t revolve around your precious offspring. Ffs! 🤦🏻‍♀️

aliceinawonderland · 22/12/2024 11:03

To those saying that others should cope with a child of 6 going to the loo/coming back/looking in mummy's bag for a drink/snack in the middle of a performance... absolutely NO!!

ROH ballet tickets are often £100 or more ( even the gods can be £50), and we don't want our performance spoiled.

Many theatre goers become immersed in the action on stage and are "lost" in it. Can you imagine being interrupted during the exquisite beauty of say Romeo and Juliet's pas de deux, by people getting up and down?

If a child cannot cope, then there are usually accessible performances available.

I read the whole thread and not one person said they won’t let you back in AT ALL or that they’ll throw you out. Everyone was pointing out that some places will not let you back in until a suitable gap or even the interval. (Actually it could be possible you won’t be let back in at all if you go out close to the end and there isn’t another suitable gap before it finishes).

I think there was only one person before your reply that simply said they might not let you back in. But they certainly didn’t say AT ALL or that you’d get thrown out. Every other person specified that you’d be let in at a suitable gap.
But your first comment just said “of course you’ll be let back in!” So you were the one who didn’t say at first “even if it’s a suitable gap”
So most people were just pointing out to you that there’s no “of course” about it. But then you changed it to being about being thrown out which not one person has said.
