Bit annoying considering they also share the same surname!

I know no one owns a name, but it's pretty annoying.

Whats the name?

worriedhidinginplainsight · 21/12/2024 05:22

Oh, and I absolutely love one of my female cousins names and if I was to have a daughter I would definitely want to use it. I would let her and my family know first, but I think they would like to have her name passed on (unfortunately I don't have children and won't be having any, but hypothetically it would be a good thing, not a source of anger!)

worriedhidinginplainsight · 21/12/2024 05:18

My brother and two of my cousins (on the same side of the family) all have the same name! It's not a problem at all. They are all named after my grandfather who everyone adored. I think it's really nice. The boys don't mind sharing the name.... I think they are quite proud of it 😄

Pallisers · 21/12/2024 03:18

oh for goodness sake so many of my cousins and second cousins have the same name. Are you seriously annoyed at this?

Riapia · 21/12/2024 03:06

In my DM’s family the first daughter is always given a certain first name.
I have the same first name as an aunt and two cousins. We all live in the same village. Amusing at family gatherings.

Ladyof2025 · 21/12/2024 02:26

So what? My sis called her son the same base as her brother. 50 years on, it still hasn't caused a problem.

RubyOrca · 21/12/2024 02:25

YABU - given the non response to the highly repeated question on how often these two kids are going to be interacting, and whether they’ll be in the same small school etc I’m guessing you have little to nothing to do with this family. Also - with no answer as to the uniqueness of the name combo I’m guessing more Jack Smith than Casamir Thistlebottom.

Unless you ran your name choice past them for approval, you can’t expect them to run their name choices past you. Your kid being born first really doesn’t veto those names for other people - especially distant family.

I get why it’s annoying. I share a name with another person in my community and it causes administrative hassles at times (it would be easier if they were close family, but they aren’t). But that’s just life.

BorrowersAreVermin · 21/12/2024 01:59

DSis and a cousin are a few months apart in age. I know DM was pretty annoyed her sister chose a name for our cousin she was considering for DSis. Both DM and my aunty are gone now, would have been interesting to ask them.

DC has a very unique name for where we live. Moreso the spelling. So unique I've only heard of one other child in the area who has a tenuous connection to DP. I think it's a beautiful name so fair play.

SALaw · 21/12/2024 01:50

My mum and her siblings have multiple cousins with the same names, and they all lived in the same small town. No one cares, and they all grow up to have their own circle etc so it doesn't have any impact on them at all.

Give your head a wobble

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 21/12/2024 00:39

I'm kind of reminded of 'My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavours last night! I guess it's pretty serious.'

Anyway YABU - they won't see each other much I guess, and when they do it'll be cute for them to have a name buddy.

MissSookieStackhouse · 21/12/2024 00:37

YABU - many families have several people with the same name. Total non issue for cousins.

wigsonthegreenandhatsforthelifting · 21/12/2024 00:34

My cousin named two of her children the same names as two of my siblings.

The surname was different and it always had to be used to avoid confusion.

Why is it annoying?

charabang · 21/12/2024 00:26

My son and his first cousin have the same name. They are two years apart. Therefore Nana has two grandkids with the same name. Not an issue for the family especially as one cousin is in England and the other in Ireland.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 20/12/2024 23:54

It's a bit weird of them but everyone knows you got there first.
Theo child will be Noah jones the 2nd

Don't be silly.

Coffeeisnecessary · 20/12/2024 22:44

My cousin named his ds the same as mine, I thought it was quite nice!

Mylittlebobble · 20/12/2024 22:41

I'd feel put out too. I wouldn't say anything as it's done now but I'd put it in my imaginary grievance book.

MrsSunshine2b · 20/12/2024 22:36

If they see each other a lot I'm sure they'll end up going by nicknames, e.g. if they are both named Oliver one will go by Ollie to differentiate between them.

My daughter hasn't met any of her second cousins so it wouldn't matter to me.

GingersOwner26 · 20/12/2024 22:30

The closest to that in my family is that my cousin and I have the same middle name (a very common one for the decade we were born), but since we have different first names it's never been an issue.

When I was at primary school, let's say this guy in my class was Thomas Smith, and he had a cousin in the year below who was also Thomas Smith. Cousin Thomas went to a different secondary, and fell off most people's radar. Then Cousin Thomas died, and another classmate found out about it, thought it was Our Thomas, and announced Our Thomas's death in a Facebook group chat. Since most people hadn't kept in touch with Our Thomas, no one knew any different at first and there were a few upset people in the group chat before Our Thomas's best friend, who knew it was the cousin who had died, saw the message and clarified.

I’m guessing if you know your partner’s cousin has had a baby and what they’ve called it, you are close enough to know who your partner’s cousins are. So OP’s family obviously isn’t the same as yours and your real world experience.

Edited

My guess, given that the OP has not answered the many posters who have asked how close they are and how often the two children would see each other, they likely are not particularly close. We are being left to guess, though.

Namechange1892 · 20/12/2024 22:04

I don't even know who my partner's cousins are, let alone what they name their kids. in the real world this is an absolutely bonkers thing to be annoyed about.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 20/12/2024 22:18

I like very classic, popular names. I have more than 30 1st cousins. If I excluded all their childrens names too (my 2nd cousins), where would it stop? Between my own grandparents, parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, 1st cousins etc then most of the classic, popular names (James, Charlotte, Thomas, William, Elizabeth type ones) have already been used!

OP It sucks that the DC will share a surname too (and presumably you will see them regularly or you wouldn’t be that upset?) but if it’s popular, very commonplace name then sorry I think you are being a bit unreasonable - your relatives might have had the name in mind for years (along with a lot of other people!)

I’ve liked a particular popular girls name for years- but it happens to be the name of one of my 2nd cousins (along with several hundred other girls born each year in the UK and probably millions total worldwide as it’s an absolute classic). If I hadn’t had a DS, I would still have considered using it 🤷‍♀️ (and btw my DS’s name has also been in the family 🤣, albeit one of his great- grandparents).
