Bit annoying considering they also share the same surname!

I know no one owns a name, but it's pretty annoying.

Do you live near each other?

liltshake · 21/12/2024 18:45

I dunno I think I would find that a bit weird. I’m sure in a few days you’ll be completely over it though

FelixtheAardvark · 21/12/2024 18:43

I have 4 cousins with the same first name (second ones differ).

Nobody in our family cares.

Why should you?

YABU.

pineapplesundae · 21/12/2024 18:41

I think that’s cute!

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 21/12/2024 18:36

I had two cousins with the same name as me, first and surname. Two of us are married so only one left! Absolutely no problem. It’s a non issue, YABU.

Cassandra28 · 21/12/2024 18:30

All part of life's rich tapestry I'm afraid.
When I was in senior school over 50 years ago I discovered that there was a girl with the same Christian name, middle name and surname as me but we did have different birthdays. Over 20 years later at a school reunion we both found that we had husbands with the same forenames.
It made no difference to us in life as we lived different lives with just name as a common thread.

Sassybooklover · 21/12/2024 18:28

My BIL and SIL used one of my son's middle names as the first name for their son. To be honest, I think they'd forgotten it was my son's second middle name!! I remember them telling my husband and I, their son's name and I said 'Ooh that's one of X's middle names', and they looked taken back, and just looked at each other!! I appreciate it's slightly different, as they used one of my son's middle names, rather than his first name. I just shrugged it off, it didn't bother me.

On MN nobody owns a name. In the real world it’s fucking weird and annoying that they didn’t choose a different name.

I live in the real world as well as existing on MN, and have two separate sets of cousins who share a name. It's really not unusual. My family is Irish, if that helps.

SEMPA1234567 · 21/12/2024 18:20

We named our daughter after my husbands grandmother (mainly because it was a named we loved but also liked the family connection). My husbands cousin had already used the name for her daughter.

We barely ever see that side of the family though so didn’t give it a second thought.

If you see them regularly and your children are similar ages I can see that it might be a bit annoying.

Letmeknowhowthatgoes · 21/12/2024 18:18

No one has our surname. It's not at all common

@shoulde well your DHs cousin does, possibly their partner does, and now the new baby definitely does - so that's not "no one".

Whoarethoseguys · 21/12/2024 18:13

shoulde · 20/12/2024 19:43

That's weird

Why is it weird?

Whoarethoseguys · 21/12/2024 18:11

I don't see the issue. It doesn't take anything away from your son. Perhaps it's a name they love more than any other. And it's not as though they are very close family. But even if they were giving someone a name someone else in the family has is very common traditionally

yaychocolateginandwine · 21/12/2024 18:07

So ???

Spriterat · 21/12/2024 18:05

I don’t get it. My son has my Dad’s name - because I like it. It is the same name as my cousin and my second cousin. What is the problem? You don’t own the name and yes there are millions of names but if they like that name they can use it as well. It doesn’t belong to you.

TheMauveBeaker · 21/12/2024 18:04

Yes YABU. Amazed at yet another name issue. What’s the big deal? There are likely to be thousands of people - if not more - with the same name. Why do people care so much about these tiny things!

TheTavern · 21/12/2024 18:00

Yes yabu

StrikeForever · 21/12/2024 17:53

You are being ridiculously unreasonable. There is no issue here.

GrumpyWombat · 21/12/2024 13:24

We unwittingly called our daughter the same name as my husbands cousin’s daughter. We weren’t in touch at the time and thankfully don’t live anywhere near each other. Same surname too.

MrsPositivity1 · 21/12/2024 13:14

I called my son the same name as my cousin's son (different surnames)

He's 12 years older than our son, he was our Page Boy and he's a fantastic young man. We felt it was a nod to how much we thought of him to call our son after him.

Cherrysoup · 21/12/2024 11:33

Hello, OP, where you at?! I echo what everyone else says, if you’re physically close, bit odd, but some names are popular. If I type Harry into the search box at school, I get a whole page. If it’s one of the top names from the annual lists, YABU.

shoulde · 20/12/2024 20:29

Except they're both little Freddie in this instance

I'd let it go, @shoulde , unless the surname is unique. Yes it's unimaginative of them, but maybe they'd picked the name first. Freddie has been very popular for years.

You have every right to mind but there's not a lot you can do about it.

Anecdotally I met three people not related to me with the same first name and surname it was funny we are in no way related the only time it was an issue was when we worked at the same company and our wage slips kept getting mixed up

Then when I got married my exes aunt had the same first and last name as me

I have a common first name and surname, and same thing happens in work with me. I've had to start using my middle name too to avoid confusion.

arcticpandas** No, still the same thing. Why is OP allowed to choose from ALLLLLL the infinite names but the other person isn't?? 😂😂

arcticpandas · 21/12/2024 07:20

DidyouNO · 20/12/2024 21:14

'There are infinite names available, I think that's what's so annoying.'
But there was infinite names available when you chose that name for your child but they can't do exactly what you did? Make it make sense😂😂

There was infinite names NOT TAKEN by family members when OP named her child. BIG difference.
