Bit annoying considering they also share the same surname!

I know no one owns a name, but it's pretty annoying.

You must inhabit some sort of strange world where people actually care about this stuff. My friend's cousin gave her daughter the same name as my friend's daughter - no-one thinks anything of it, even though the cousins are close and spend a lot of time together. Believe it or not there are even fathers/sons and mothers/daughters with the same name - somehow they seem to manage without their lives being blighted! It's hardly the "last thing that most people would do", some of you just inhabit rather small worlds.

My mother had the same name as her MIL, my gran. First name, middle name and once married the same surname. Maybe they shouldn't have married. Never caused a problem, gran used her first name, mum hated her first name and used her middle name. It still amused us as kids.

PantherchameleonsocksforChristmas · 20/12/2024 20:43

I think you're BU. I decided my son's name 5 years before he was born, I fell in love with it. Perhaps they did the same, and it just so happened that unfortunately you named your son the name they planned on, who knows! It's hard to change your mind once you've settled on one you love, and this might've been what happened.

EmmaMaria · 20/12/2024 20:42

My 20x grandmother, born in 1321, has the same name as me. I am very annoyed.

DisforDarkChocolate · 20/12/2024 20:42

I've never met most of my second cousins, it really is a non-issue.

Is there a family connection? Like both named after a grandparent or something? If so, then you absolutely don’t own it and they have a right to use it too.

I and others have asked and the OP hasn't answered, so I'm going to assume yes.

eightIsNewNine · 20/12/2024 20:40

I agree it is rather weird. I would say it was ok if this child has a different surname, but the exact match and close in age and supposedly area is annoying.

In the same time, you can't do much about it.
Does any of them have a middle name?

momtoboys · 20/12/2024 20:40

I have just never understood people being precious about names. However, I am sorry it has upset you.

That's so sweet, I like it. Tbh I know next ti nothing about Ireland but I will definitely visit one day. Wee Willie 😄

Wee Willie Winkie, runs through the town,
Upstairs and downstairs, in his nightgown;
Rapping at the window, crying through the lock,
“Are the children in their beds?
Now it’s eight o’clock.”

arcticpandas · 20/12/2024 20:40

GlitchStitch · 20/12/2024 20:35

I have loads of first cousins (large Irish family) and quite a few of us share names. Most of us have kids of our own now too and there are quite a few duplicate names again in the new generation. Nobody gives a shit.

That's because you're "Big.." and "Wee..". Don't know if that works in England ?

arcticpandas · 20/12/2024 20:38

TheignT · 20/12/2024 20:27

Either my family is odd or it is not unusual in Ireland. In my family they don't use senior and junior but Big... or Wee..., the funniest (being childish) is Big Willie and Wee Willie.

Edited

Porcuporpoise · 20/12/2024 20:36

Honestly struggling to see the problem here. Are you likely to be sending them to the same small primary school?

WhimsicalGubbins76 · 20/12/2024 20:17

@shoulde, ignore the droves of “you don’t own a name” 🙄
These are from the Mumsnetters that just seem to find joy in being derogatory and patronising on any post that they can.

Of course it’s bloody irritating that they decided to call their child the same name as your child. It’s also bloody weird.
It’s absolutely the last thing that most people would do, and it’s confusing for family members.
They didn’t break any laws no, but they did dial up the weirdness to 11

Is it something like Decimus Surtees or is it something like Noah Johnston?

God....third world problems. They are 2nd cousins, shouldn't be a problem

Third world problems??

ACynicalDad · 20/12/2024 20:34

I reckon i met a second cousin once or twice and not since i was under 10, unless your family dynamics are very different I’m not seeing much to worry about

Ihopeithinkiknow · 20/12/2024 20:31

You think that's weird I have got 2 brothers with the same name lol ok we are a blended family and one of them is my stepbrother but we have been siblings since we were kids now and there is 8 of us altogether and we call the older one big Luke and the younger one little Luke (not real names btw) but there has never been any confusion.
It's not the same situation as yours i know but I would love it if one of my cousins named their kid the same name as my kids lol maybe I'm weird or maybe there are bigger things to worry about

Lovelyview · 20/12/2024 20:31

In our family two sisters in law and one niece have exactly the same name (First name and surname) It's not a problem.

Picklewicklepickle · 20/12/2024 20:31

Husband’s cousin? I couldn’t get so worked up about such a distant relative. In my dad’s family every boy for generations has had either 1 of 2 specific names, there’s 100s of them! No one cares.

ForGreyKoala · 20/12/2024 20:30

Yes, YABU. I couldn't care less about something so trivial.

steff13 · 20/12/2024 20:30

shoulde · 20/12/2024 20:29

Except they're both little Freddie in this instance

So does that mean there's a big Freddie?

ItOnlyTakesTwoMinutes · 20/12/2024 20:29

shoulde · 20/12/2024 19:41

There are infinite names available, I think that's what's so annoying.

Wouldn't care as much if they didn't also share the same surname!

They're only 3 years apart in age too.

Hahaha
