To say your engagement ring goes on your finger first and THEN your wedding ring?

So, just that. As you'd have your engagement ring on already at the altar and then your wedding ring goes on, surely?

A quick glance around shows others have it the other way around Confused

I know that most do wedding first, but I'm with you and think it should be engagement ring then wedding ring. Like securing your togetherness or some such. But people get touchy at the logic Wink

Hate to be that person but it’s ‘your’, not ‘you’re’.

dafa · 20/12/2024 15:26

Me too. But only because it looks better this way as eternity ring is same colour stone as engagement ring.

i think it’s preference, my SIL wears hers in the order they were given, engagement, wedding, eternity. It looks fine.

do whatever you want

Ohhh.. I like your SIL’s idea! I might steal that…

I thought it was engagement ring and THEN wedding ring... Like in the order you're given them? No....?

They look weird the other way round!

I wear mine the opposite way. Just switched them round the test and that feels/looks weird to me. It's what you're used to?
I don't always wear my engagement ring but almost never take off my wedding ring (only if injured really!)

WildCats24 · 20/12/2024 15:38

It makes no difference to me. I didn’t want to faff in my wedding, so the wedding band was put on 2nd, and I discreetly swapped them around later, when we were in the back of the church signing the certificate/without an audience watching. My DSis’ wedding was quite awkward when she took off her engagement in the ceremony and couldn’t figure out where to put it when her DH put the wedding band on her and said his bit.

These days I just grab my 3 rings and they land how they land—it’s a different order each time!

Yes this.

wedding ring closest to your heart.

Yes, this.

The only time my Mum's wedding ring left her finger at all was upon her death earlier this year and it broke my heart to remove it for the cremation. Until then, it had never even so much as sniffed release from her finger for 63 years.

I really loved this concept and was determined to adopt it myself, until I got the massive arse with my husband one day many years ago, and threw it at him. Whoops.

AffableApple · 20/12/2024 15:34

Wedding ring first. But I have a slightly odd choice of engagement ring, which would never fit with another ring, so it lives on my other hand nowadays after marriage.

CoralRubyFish · 20/12/2024 15:31

This... really doesn't matter

myrtleWilson · 20/12/2024 15:31

I don't possess an engagement ring and wear my wedding ring on my right hand - am clearly very wrong!

ElderLemon · 20/12/2024 15:29

I didn't bother with an engagement ring, no dilemma 😇

Wedding ring, eternity ring in the middle then engagement ring for me.

Bearbookagainandagain · 20/12/2024 15:24

I don't think there are rules. I asked the jeweller when we went to get our wedding band, and he told me that generally people prefer to put the engagement ring first because they are bigger, then wedding band to hold the first in position. I do agree that it's more comfortable for me so that's what I do.

AliasGrape · 20/12/2024 15:23

I wear either one, both or none in any order really - the wedding ring is so thin (nothing else worked with my engagement ring combined with my weirdly short fingers) so even with both together it kind of looks like one ring.

I do think the norm, at least for every married woman I know, is wedding ring then engagement ring though.

ChimpiestoftheChimps · 20/12/2024 15:20

I wear mine that way because engagement ring is slightly too big and wedding ring fits perfectly so keeps the engagement ring on!

ComtesseDeSpair · 20/12/2024 15:20

I wear my wedding ring underneath my engagement ring because they fit better that way. I can’t say I’ve ever paid any attention to what other women are doing with their rings, and am surprised to learn there are people out there paying attention to mine tbh.

Starlight1979 · 20/12/2024 15:17

They look weird the other way round!

georgepigg · 20/12/2024 15:15

Varies by country, I’ve noticed throughout my life in different countries the norm is different.

mrssquidink · 20/12/2024 15:12

I wear wedding ring first then engagement ring, but that’s because a) I take off my engagement ring for things like exercise but never my wedding ring and b) the engagement ring is a solitaire and I think it would look weird to be on first (but eg a band of gemstones wouldn’t). However I wasn’t aware there is a right or wrong way!

ISeeCheekyFuckers · 20/12/2024 15:05

Genuinely don’t think it matters. Neither DH nor I have worn rings since the wedding day, and we didn’t have engagement rings. 🤷🏻‍♀️

AhhSalmonSkinRoll · 20/12/2024 14:57

Feel I made it more complicated than it needed to be 😆

Shinyandnew1 · 20/12/2024 14:57

No, take engagement ring off for the wedding then put it back on afterwards on top.

It’s practical as well-you can leave the wedding ring on all the time but take the engagement ring off to polish the stone! Or if you’re doing something where it might get damaged/dirty.

AhhSalmonSkinRoll · 20/12/2024 14:56

Well I took my engagement ring off to get married, wedding ring went on. Later in day I took wedding ring back off, put engagement ring back on first then wedding ring on second... 🤷‍♀️

Crojo · 20/12/2024 14:55

Another reason I heard that it was wedding ring first is due to the fact many people never take their wedding ring off, whereas engagement rings are often removed for cleaning and things.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/12/2024 14:54

I always thought you had your wedding ring on first, then the engagement ring, because the engagement ring often had to come off (when doing messy jobs or anything that might endanger the stones) while the wedding ring stayed on all the time. So you could take off and put on your engagement ring without messing with the wedding ring.

JellycatEgg · 20/12/2024 14:54

Definitely wedding ring first, but I always thought it was because people take their engagement ring on and off more (eg for practical reasons if its a big stone), whereas wedding ring stays on.
