To say your engagement ring goes on your finger first and THEN your wedding ring?

So, just that. As you'd have your engagement ring on already at the altar and then your wedding ring goes on, surely?

A quick glance around shows others have it the other way around Confused

Never had an engagement ring. Couldn't be arsed. Each to their own. They're just silly rules a random person made up.

PissedDog · 21/12/2024 19:30

I wear mine the way you describe OP. I didn't want to take my engagement ring off so just went with it 😀

Wedding ring, eternity ring in the middle then engagement ring for me.

This!!

JayJayj · 21/12/2024 19:10

That’s how I wear my rings. I was engaged first so swapping them round seems odd and I don’t like how it looks on my finger!

Crojo · 20/12/2024 14:55

Another reason I heard that it was wedding ring first is due to the fact many people never take their wedding ring off, whereas engagement rings are often removed for cleaning and things.

Exactly - I've never taken my wedding ring off!

Nothatgingerpirate · 21/12/2024 18:34

Sorry.
Does it fucking matter, which order they go in?
For myself, it's been about comfort and practicality.
🙄

I was told the wedding band goes on first so it means your wedding ring is closest to your heart.

Surely it’s just personal preference - there is no right or wrong. I didn’t want an engagement or wedding ring - am still married!

Also this, you’re married with or without a ring, it is the words you say that legally marries you so it doesn’t much matter!

CeCeDrake · 21/12/2024 18:30

Wedding celebrant here 🫶 definitely your wedding ring first as it should be the first ring on that finger on your wedding day so engagement ring is popped off until wedding ring goes back on. I suppose you should see it as the engagement ring is there as a promise of marriage but your wedding ring is symbolism of the commitment of marriage. Also, engagement rings are a ‘new’ thing compared to wedding rings 😊

I have a wishbone style wedding ring, which goes on my finger first, Next is my engagement ring and lastly, I have a wishbone style eternity ring that sits on top of my engagement ring.

ForBetterForWorseOrNot · 21/12/2024 18:13

Wedding ring first. Your supposed to swap engagement ring to other hand the day before until after the ceremony.

Newname71 · 21/12/2024 18:11

I wear mine wedding ring, engagement ring then eternity ring.
The order that I got them in my case. We met and married within 10 weeks so I didn’t have an engagement ring.
I got the engagement ring a few years later cos I felt like I’d missed out 😂

My wedding ring is on first so that I can take my engagement ring off more easily if I need to and not for that daft reason.

YMZ · 21/12/2024 18:08

Interesting question. I believe at the ceremony the wedding ring is the only ring on the finger.
After that, they go in order of receipt ie, engagement first, wedding second.

StrikeForever · 21/12/2024 18:06

No, wedding ring first, then engagement ring!

Okayornot · 20/12/2024 20:06

I don't wear my rings anymore, but when I did it was wedding ring first. My engagement ring came off a lot- eg to do the washing up, at the gym or in the shower. Wedding ring tended to stay on all the time as just a plain band so made sense to have it on first.

What’s wrong?

Wrong

jinglejanglejo · 20/12/2024 14:50

OMG I've been wearing it wrong 😑

So have I for 24 years, but I do it deliberately because mine are not very traditional and they just look much better that way round. Why does it matter?

littlemissprosseco · 20/12/2024 18:07

Changingplace · 20/12/2024 17:48

Well that’s me stuffed then, I wear my engagement ring fairly regularly but never wear my wedding ring.

times have changed. I don’t think traditions are followed much anymore. Wear what you like. Most traditions suck anyway.

RockOrAHardplace · 20/12/2024 18:01

I thought exactly the same as you, for the same reason, but when we went to get the eternity ring, repeated jewellers told me

  1. Wedding Ring: Placed first, closer to the heart. This symbolizes that the wedding bond is the strongest and most important.
  2. Engagement Ring: Worn next to the wedding ring.
During the wedding ceremony, it's common for the engagement ring to be temporarily moved to the right hand. After the ceremony, the engagement ring is moved back to the left hand, on top of the wedding ring and I suppose that is why I was wrong, for the same reason as you.

But personally, I don't think it matters, wear it how you like.

Me too, by my dm.

housemaus · 20/12/2024 17:49

I always wear it engagement ring first, just because it sits nicer that way. I didn't know there was a specific way to wear them!

I'm bad at it in general though because I go days without remembering to put on either...

Beginningtolookalot · 20/12/2024 17:48

I think it’s wedding ring first - closest to your heart . I’ve also never taken mine off - it’s taped over whenever it should have been removed .
