Or the internet in general?

I really enjoy (for the most part) using mumsnet and have had some really helpful advice over the years and some good laughs. I know anything goes on here though, especially in AIBU and thats why I rarely post in this section. It's great to get honest advice but what's the difference between honest and cruel I wonder.

Mine was a couple of years ago when I posted on the relationships board about how I was struggling to overcome the fact that my ex partner and close friend ended up in a relationship a few months after we had split. It felt much worse as I had suffered a miscarriage a year before, cue some lovely poster telling me to basically get over it and that many people had suffered miscarriages before and I wasn't anything special - absolutely correct but that didn't make my situation any less sad or painful.

I can laugh about it now (the comment) but it was horrible at the time. I just can't imagine someone saying that to another persons face but people feel more confident behind a keyboard don't they. I'm sure others on here have worse examples. It only crossed my mind because I read a thread earlier and some of the comments were absolutely awful (I mean, really crossing the line and quite hurtful imo)

This is nothing compared to some stuff on here but once I made the fatal error in answering one of the 'how much do you earn' threads.
At the time I was earning 21K - about 3 years ago.

Someone (more than one actually), commented I'd be better off working full time.

This was full time! I've never earned over 25K pa in all my working life. I'm one of life's admin people, it made me feel stupid, still does.

The nastiest thing I’ve seen on here was when a woman posted (a regular poster) that her partner had punched her in the face the night before. You could tell she was absolutely stunned. One of her sentences was “I can’t even leave as we’ve just brought a house, literally just moved in, and I’ve put all my cash from my old flat into it”. She was also far from her family and basically was in an awful situation.

One of the first replies was “Sorry I’m confused.. you brought a house? Where have you taken your house?” I still think ‘absolute bitch’ anytime I see that poster post as it was very obvious what she meant.

Plenty of times but I honestly don't remember!

I got a FB ban during Covid for calling some conspiracy theorist a man that performs in a circus and is meant to be funny! I thought it was pretty mild!

Some of these are awful!

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 19/12/2024 20:40

When I mentioned how I'd got pregnant within a few months of meeting my partner there was a good grief comment followed by something really scathing that I can't remember. Made my blood boil at the time. 5 years down the line were still together and we have another one.

ValleyClouds · 19/12/2024 20:40

Gosh that's disgusting @ARichtGoodDram I hope they got banned

That my infertility meant I had an agenda, and I was clearly determined to make sure other women were as miserable as me by convincing them to have an abortion.

On a thread where the OP had decided to terminate for very sensible reasons but was understandably feeling the emotions of the situation (abusive relationship).

That’s awful.

catphone · 19/12/2024 20:39

Someone told me to go and walk off a pier

ARichtGoodDram · 19/12/2024 20:39

That my youngest DDs life limiting condition that has seen her in ICU five times plus numerous operations was punishment because I initially planned to terminate the pregnancy when I found out.

sprigatito · 19/12/2024 20:37

I've had serious death threats on Twitter. The first time it really shook me.

Grumpyoldthing · 19/12/2024 20:37

That I was unhinged and no wonder a child had been kept away from me. ( missing a nephew ) it hurt .

BamboleoQueen · 19/12/2024 20:37

Someone went batshit on me when I was having problems with my kid's school- bullying reception teacher, and my child had entirely stopped talking coming home with bruises, head teacher completely disinterested.

They laid into me, telling me I was the problem, I'm "that parent", it'll be shit at the new school because I'm a tosser, my kid was the problem, I'm making excuses for bad behaviour, and if there were problems which werent of my making it was my duty to stay and fix it at the expense of my child.

It really, really got me down. I was at the end of my rope.

In any case, I'd love to tell them that we moved school, my kid is now thriving, is supported for the undiagnosed SEN they were struggling with, have caught up, dealt with the trauma, and we've been followed by 2 staff members and at least 10 kids from the old school. The old school lost ~20 kids in one year group as people dropped like flies after we left, to the point OFSTED and the LA got involved.

Stillherestillpraying · 19/12/2024 20:36

You sound really unwell.

My gran had died and one of my (apparently) best friends had humiliated me. Sure, I am unreasonable to be upset right?

ValleyClouds · 19/12/2024 20:36

I got called a cunt once on Twitter by a Star Wars fanatic

Oh and under a different name two posters hounded me off a thread on here despite multiple apologies because I hadn't read the OP properly and asked a stupid question. It didn't occur to them that whilst I was an idiot they were bullies. I took note of one username and whenever I see her I think "Sanctimonious Bitch"

Someone else told me I'd been rude to someone on another thread, it was my own thread and they were the one being patronising and deserved my rudeness!

Edingril · 19/12/2024 20:34

I have been accused of being a man and some ridiculous acronyms

SinnerBoy · 19/12/2024 20:33

Oh, these are awful, I'm very sorry and sympathetic to all of you.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 19/12/2024 20:33

Childhood abuse/trauma always seems to be a contest on here.

I was neglected as a child, lots of abuse of all kinds due to parents ill mental health. I've put huge effort into mending relationships and healing as an adult, but was told I 'must be lying about the abuse for attention, as you'd be NC if it actually happened.' ~ also, the age old MN love of, 'but they didn't MEAN to neglect you - they loved you! It wasn't abuse!'

Hskatkat · 19/12/2024 20:33

I've witnessed some of the shittiest comments on here several times, I report twats on the regular (and have been told it didn't break rules and I could "challenge" the person! ) I've seen some some very aggressive armchair detectives on here, typing their options as facts.

I think lots of ppl on here spout utter shite they would never say in real life in a million years.
I also think some ppl find themselves amusing and try to say awful things for reactions.

HeddaGarbled · 19/12/2024 20:32

Someone accused me of voting Tory 😱

DemonicCaveMaggot · 19/12/2024 20:32

I was asked if I had been 'hit in the head with a fire extinguisher'.

I can't remember what the argument was about.

I was right though.

MrsTigerface · 19/12/2024 20:30

That was horrible, OP. Thank heavens that you are so resilient, many people would not be. I am so glad to hear that you are over that nasty nonsense. Going through a miscarriage is dreadful, and anyone who seeks to minimise that experience in any way is just awful.

ItsCalledAConversation · 19/12/2024 20:29

That she would hate to have a daughter as awful as me.

SouthLondonMum22 · 19/12/2024 20:29

I was called sick for using nursery for a baby
When pregnant for the 2nd time, I was asked why I bothered considering my first goes to nursery

DepartingRadish · 19/12/2024 20:28

That my infertility meant I had an agenda, and I was clearly determined to make sure other women were as miserable as me by convincing them to have an abortion.

DontBiteTheCat · 19/12/2024 20:28

This place is batshit sometimes.

Someone told me I “wasn’t special for being abused as a child”. As well as having an empathy bypass, she clearly lacked reading comprehension because I hadn’t been abused as a child, I worked with children who had been abused and commented on a post inline with my experience of that.

Didn’t bother me, but it could have been very hurtful to those members who had suffered from abuse as a child.

I hope she heals.

Tarraleah · 19/12/2024 20:26

what someone thought was nasty, but made me roll my eyes and sigh

"you must be a man!"
That was the worst insult they could think about. I feel sad for them to be honest.
