Or the internet in general?

I really enjoy (for the most part) using mumsnet and have had some really helpful advice over the years and some good laughs. I know anything goes on here though, especially in AIBU and thats why I rarely post in this section. It's great to get honest advice but what's the difference between honest and cruel I wonder.

Mine was a couple of years ago when I posted on the relationships board about how I was struggling to overcome the fact that my ex partner and close friend ended up in a relationship a few months after we had split. It felt much worse as I had suffered a miscarriage a year before, cue some lovely poster telling me to basically get over it and that many people had suffered miscarriages before and I wasn't anything special - absolutely correct but that didn't make my situation any less sad or painful.

I can laugh about it now (the comment) but it was horrible at the time. I just can't imagine someone saying that to another persons face but people feel more confident behind a keyboard don't they. I'm sure others on here have worse examples. It only crossed my mind because I read a thread earlier and some of the comments were absolutely awful (I mean, really crossing the line and quite hurtful imo)

OP posts:

MN can be so supportive sometimes — and vicious other times. My first ever post was on AIBU and for me it wasn’t necessarily the things people said in themselves, more how casual and throwaway some of the comments were — just so dismissive and judgemental and unhelpful — and knowing that the person typing them wouldn’t have thought twice about their words, yet I was really affected by them. I do (often!) wish people were kinder on here. One of the things I hate most, for example, is when the OP writes a long post asking for help or advice and someone replies with just TL;DR — I mean, how dismissive is that…?

1dayatatime · 19/12/2024 21:04

Being accused of being a bot or a paid troll is a fairly common accusation.

TBH - sometimes I wish I was being paid to post on MN as I could do with the cash!!

Scirocco · 19/12/2024 21:04

I was told I wasn't a mother. My first child had died and my second was seriously ill (fortunately pulled through and is now recovered) so I was really struggling. That comment took me right back to those feelings of loss.

I was told that people I cared about who had died in tragic circumstances had deserved it.

People say weird shit on here all the time but the only one that ever ever got me.. I posted a thread about my ex partner while we were still together and as it unfolded I shared physical and sexual abuse that I was experiencing from him. Some absolute idiot popped up like 'oh but on this thread on this date you said he was nice'. Absolutely fucked up honestly 🤣

MistressoftheDarkSide · 19/12/2024 21:01

I just don't understand the mentality of the people who read - or often barely read it seems, a really tragic post and immediately brings up a minor detail to nitpick, or goes all detective to prove it's not real, or is simply so wrapped up in "where's your resilience - it's all your own fault" from the get go.

I know not everyone tells the truth on the Internet, but I also have personal experience of "you couldn't make this shit up" left field occurrences that I would have trouble believing if I hadn't gone through them. Maybe it makes me naive or gullible, but I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt, and if things in a thread don't ring true I just try and back away slowly. I'm no saint, and while I may internally judge, I don't think it's right to just attack on a personal level.

So solidarity to those who've been on the rough end in the Wild West of the Internet and on here.

I certainly find it educational but it some people just don't stop and think that those in their firing line are also people with feelings. I know alot say that coming onto AIBU with sensitive subjects is almost asking for it, but it doesn't make it right.

rickyrickygrimes · 19/12/2024 21:00

I’m currently being accused of wanting to steal my FIL’s money and force him to live at home in misery so that I can inherit his vast wealth. All I did was go on the specialist board here (Elderly Parents) to seek advice on his specific financial / care situation 🤷‍♀️. It’s odd as it’s usually quite a small crowd on there, and lots of knowledgeable posters. But something about my post seems to have attracted a lot of attention, mostly of the ‘cancel the cheque!’ (and don’t read the OP) type responses.

Arlanymor · 19/12/2024 20:59

That I shouldn’t have bought up my ‘abortion due to medical reasons’ on a thread when it was completely legitimate. And it wasn’t that long ago. First swipe by someone’s claws after about two years on here. I’m fine though, some people are just not very nice are they?

H34th · 19/12/2024 20:59

There was a comment about stillborn babies that I found very hurtful and deleted the app for a few months. I don't remember what was the discussion and what was said but I remember how bad it made me feel.

Foreigners88 · 19/12/2024 20:59

Also the lady with the lights on and the milk out, I was the only one suggesting it was someone with a key access ...everybody laughed me off and called me crazy until the lady came and posted what really happened was what I said: it was an intruder. And I know it was, because of the experiences we have had

Hoppinggreen · 19/12/2024 20:58

I was told that just because I was fat it didn't mean I couldn't have any empathy.

FilthyforFirth · 19/12/2024 20:58

The one and only thread I started ib AIBU (I quickly learnt my lesson and only post in Christmas now) was me sort of musing on my terrible hen do, a few years after the fact.

My friends are lovely but it was not great and I felt hurt that they didnt know me well enough.

First world problems I know. I had people queuing up to tell me how childish, bridezilla I was, I didnt deserve friends and my personal favourite, my marriage was doomed to fail and I would be divorced soon etc.

I have been happily married for 8 years and still best friends with the hens but I often remember how small and sad they made me feel.

Never again!

Foreigners88 · 19/12/2024 20:57

If you don't get the comprehension fast, even though a foreign, you must be mental, on drugs on abuser of alcohol :D

MyPithyPoster · 19/12/2024 20:57

When i needed to rehome a dog that had bitten me and i was pregnant. Told someone should steal my baby and hide it from me so id know how the mother dog felt rehoming her pup without her permission or knowledge 🙄

XenoBitch · 19/12/2024 20:55

For some reason, someone took a dislike to a comment I made on a rather benign thread about VR.
They went on to make an account that was very similar to my name, used AS to find other posts, and basically made a thread where I (or they) was ranting and crying about everything.
It was reported and hastily taken down.... but it still boggles my mind that someone was that invested in me to even make the effort.

On a thread about benefits, someone told me that she was "disgusted" that I had not worked since 2014 (I have MH issues)... I have not been on benefits since 2014. Lucky her.

Hskatkat · 19/12/2024 20:52

@Slavetomycat that is appalling. I hope they got banned for that.

That I had Münchausen syndrome and made it up that my daughter was ill and then died.

WTF, that's diabolical Angry

Fetchthevet · 19/12/2024 20:50

Some of these are shocking 🙁I was called a pleb because I work in childcare.

CremeEggThief · 19/12/2024 20:48

I took a long break a few years back, when a couple of posters were really nasty about my DS in his late teens. No need for the insults.

user1471453601 · 19/12/2024 20:47

I was told to shut up (actually told to "shush") on the feminist part. I thought it was quite ironic, and a little bit funny.

But I'm long in the tooth, and there are few, if any, supposed put downs anyone could throw my way that I haven't heard 100 times before.

But the irony of women posting on a feminist site and telling another woman to shut up, appealed to my sense of humour.

Guess what I posted about ? It was only ten words, by the way.

Hskatkat · 19/12/2024 20:44

I also think c*nt (yes I know we can swear!) gets thrown about on here too often because someone doesn't agree with a comment.
Again most ppl don't call a stranger the c word in real life situations because that would be bat shit.

ValleyClouds · 19/12/2024 20:43

I remember the house one!

BarbaraHoward · 19/12/2024 20:43

That giving my peanut allergic daughter may contains (as recommended by her consultant) could put her in the morgue.

I've seen far worse though.

Tracystubbs · 19/12/2024 20:43

I once wrote about my sd being a massive cow on a cf thread

From shit-stirring with my narc family, doing her best to break her father and myself up to revenge porn-her spite knew no bounds

All I'd done is tell her to get a job (which she refused to do)

Cue one poster telling me that I'm evil,a nasty bitch and 'how dare you say that about your sd!!!'

Cue a shit ton of other posters backing her up on what a nasty person I am,how HER kids would never have a step mother thanks to me and how sd hadn't deserved me to have a go at her and get her to move out again

If she hadn't written about a mobility scooter a few pages back,I'd have sworn that it was the sd (she has a habit of following me around the internet)

A huge thank you to the posters who saw I'd done nothing wrong (apart from setting boundaries) and started to stick up for me

And I really hope the lady with the scooter and the other ladies who joined in having a pop at me get the help they need to heal
