Us born close to Christmas or on Christmas day have it the worst!

Lighthearted post really , but I really feel we get a rough deal. My birthday is on the 23rd December. Interested in hearing other stories or even those born on the 25th itself!
Or if you can think of any positives to this I would be very surprised.
Along side the ... I got you this for you birthday and Christmas presents , the cancelling of not making your birthday due to other Christmas events happening or just being too skint as it's Christmas there's more of a chance people forget you over this period. I dread mine every year.
Tell me I'm wrong?

dh’s is 29 February so that’s not great either.

Sauvblanctime · 18/12/2024 19:05

Partners bday is Boxing Day, mines v early January. Sucks 🤣

loopylou3030 · 18/12/2024 19:05

My son was born on Christmas day. At the moment he doesnt mind. We do him his Birthday party/celebrations a week beforehand so his friends can come and to spread the presents out. Works well and means he has his own special day then Christmas Day is just Christmas. Husband is 2nd of Jan he says that is worse as nobody ever had money to celebrate at the pub etc and had hangovers. Bad planning all around 🤣

Oh wow, he must have been titchy! That must have been a very stressful Christmas!

Very! He spent 77 days in hospital before coming home at around 4lbs.

He's now 10 and one of the tallest in his class with size 5 feet 😂

Flowersonthetv · 18/12/2024 19:03

I am the end of summer and I remember as a kid before internet etc I would send out birthday invites start of July and by end of aug people forgot or where on holiday so my
parties were always half attended. This has completely changed with phones and internet so less of an issue now days.

I think the worst time is early jan. Dec people are happy, eating / drinking happy to meet up but early jan people don’t have money, everyone’s healthy eating and not willing to leave the house.

Treacletart9 · 18/12/2024 18:56

@Avoidingthetwitch I see your 1st January and I raise you the 2nd January and my older siblings birthday is the 1st. Even less celebration 😂

There was a brilliant line in a book by Tim Kennemore about someone whose birthday fell two days after her sister's: "Everyone had already used up their birthdayness" on her sister.

PumpkinPie2016 · 18/12/2024 19:02

My nephew's birthday is on boxing day. We have always made sure to do separate birthday and Christmas presents and my sister keeps one room free of christmas decorations so that birthday things can go there.

He is 14 this year but when he was younger, parties were really tricky as no one wants to do a birthday party on boxing day. So, he used to have them late Jan/early Feb.

My dad is 2nd Jan - again, can be tricky but we have always kept birthday/Christmas things separate. This year, he is 70 so we are having a party on the 4th 😁

Well DS10 was due on 26 March but decided to appear on 17 Dec. He obviously couldn't wait for Xmas.

Obviously I know our case was very extreme and unlikely to happen but you never know!

We deliberately avoided TTC in March and April to avoid this - although I realise that others may not see it as an issue, not have the luxury of waiting and/or find it 'just happens' that way!

Even the birthday card selection sucks, unless people are well organised and buy them good and early. Shops only care about sales, so why prioritise rack space for an event that (presumably) only 1/12 of people celebrate, when there's another event that probably 95% or more people celebrate?!

As an 'outsider' (my birthday could hardly be further away from Christmas), I reckon that Christmas Eve must be one of the worst days of all for a birthday. Everybody rushing around, everything frantic and anticipatory. As far as Christmas goes, it's just a busy prep day before the main event and before people are ready to start celebrating. At least with Christmas Day, the celebrating has begun and it's not just a massive admin day.

Same here. Despite having multiple miscarriages, I still avoided conceiving certain months; I didn’t want a Winter baby as it makes birthdays tricky. Appreciate others can’t be as choosy or aren’t as bothered by birth month.

SouthLondonMum22 · 18/12/2024 18:44

DS is Dec 6th and no issues so far but he only turned 2 this time so not had many birthdays yet.

My son’s is 10 December and it never seems to get lumped in with Christmas at all, so don’t worry! We break up for Xmas on 3 Dec (Aus) so we do his birthday party the last week of term so his friends are around and then do something else fun on his actual birthday so he likes it because it’s like 10 days of birthday, and then Christmas two weeks later.

For presents, I keep a note through the year of what he might like as it can be tricky to think of things for both birthday and Christmas when they’re quite close.

I agree, I feel sorry for anyone with a birthday either week each side of Christmas. December is so full on that people are in full Christmas mode and birthdays are easy to overlook.

I would 100% use a June/July date to celebrate instead.

It's really not Ideal

My sons is too ,he's 18 this year poor lad.

whydoesitalwayshappentome · 18/12/2024 18:53

My birthday is tomorrow, and mum always put the Christmas tree up on my birthday which I loved. I don't mind Happy Birthday in Christmas cards or birthday presents in Christmas paper. My biggest gripe was my 30th birthday when people said they would come to my party then didn't turn up.

Bideshi · 18/12/2024 18:53

Avoidingthetwitch · 18/12/2024 18:37

I’m sorry, but January 1st is definitely worse.

everyone is hungover, broke, fed up with celebrating, and as a child no-one wants to do a party on New Year’s Day!

Yup.
Most restaurants are closed too. Hate it.

FizzyBisto · 18/12/2024 18:52

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/12/2024 18:48

It isn’t - the worst day for a birthday is Jan 2. That is my brother’s birthday - no one is up for doing anything on Jan 2.

If it’s Jan 1, at least it’s a bank holiday, and at least people are up for celebrating the night before, going into your birthday.

Move to Scotland - it's a bank holiday there!

Bahemoth · 18/12/2024 18:52

My son was born on the 25th December and loved it up until until this year when he said it sucks, and that it just merges into Christmas. He’s turning 10 this year but we do one room in birthday decorations/presents and another room is for Christmas.

My DH's birthday is 23 Dec and he's had this too, and hates it. It's just so bloody thoughtless, isn't it?

Yes we're made to feel like a big inconvenience or an after thought

Things I didn't like with a Boxing Day birthday:

Birthday parties as a kid were pretty much a write-off, and as an adult going out is a nightmare as there's no public transport where I am on Boxing Day and taxis are double time. I work an office job now which means I'm guaranteed my birthday off but I worked in a supermarket for around 15 years which meant it was not easy to get Boxing Day off, and the lack of transport and not living near my family meant if I couldn't get it off I was spending Christmas and my birthday alone.

I love it now though because I love having a very chilled birthday eating Christmas chocolate and watching Christmas telly and absolutely not socialising with anyone except my family!

I can think of a positive! Birthdays from 21st onwards are rarely at school on their birthdays. That's quite good right?

Yes I did always love this! However sometimes it's nice to be at school and sung happy birthday and made a fuss of by friends and teacher etc

My son was due mid December. I was worried he'd be late and close to Christmas. Fortunately he was a week early so he isn't too impacted in early December. We put off all signs of Christmas in our house until after his birthday. Though he just had his birthday and I was weirdly offended on his behalf by the Christmas wrapping paper on a few of his presents. (At 4 he didn't notice or care.)
