Lighthearted post really , but I really feel we get a rough deal. My birthday is on the 23rd December. Interested in hearing other stories or even those born on the 25th itself!
Or if you can think of any positives to this I would be very surprised.
Along side the ... I got you this for you birthday and Christmas presents , the cancelling of not making your birthday due to other Christmas events happening or just being too skint as it's Christmas there's more of a chance people forget you over this period. I dread mine every year.
Tell me I'm wrong?

Mine is 3rd Jan. Its pants. I've never had a good/special birthday. Everyone is miserable and skint.

Simplelobsterhat · 18/12/2024 19:17

My teen daughter is 22nd and she says she likes it. Everything is festive around her birthday, most years she is off school, and as a family it sort of marks the start of Xmas. We havent usually found it difficult to find people free to celebrate either. I guess it's a happy medium of not so close to Xmas that most people are already away, but equally things like school events, works Xmas do etc usually over by then. We just adjust date of party with friends if let people are booked up on her actual birthday.

I don't find many people give joint presents or Xmas wrapping. Most people are very thoughtful about it (although thinking about it it's only immediate family who would give for both anyway and they know that's what we want). It has probably meant I go less overboard with presents but that's a good thing! She gets plenty. In fact I think some people are more likely to remember her birthday because they associate it with Christmas.

I think she would feel very differently if it was Christmas day or Christmas eve though!

SleeplessInWherever · 18/12/2024 19:16

Mines Christmas Eve, my nephews Christmas Day. Love a festive birthday in my family!

I hated it when I was younger, was always jealous of people who got a “proper birthday” that wasn’t caught up in all the festive fuss. If we went for food I’d refuse to order off the Christmas menu, because it’s not Christmas it’s my birthday. Proper diva 😂

I’m less bothered now, but then I’m not really bothered about my birthday at all anymore!

We have a 3rd January here, it really is the worst day other than 1st or 2nd! At least people are positive in December, there is no joy left for the first week in January!

Good point

People write 'and happy birthday' in a Christmas card? How awful

All the time throughout my childhood. Some family members still do it. Friends don't... if they remember it that is 😂😂

I'll raise you 13th January.

The weather's shit, the decorations and lights are down, everybody's skint, the first set of bills are rolling in and there's still another fortnight until payday.

Add to that people who don't get you anything at Christmas because it's your birthday soon (and then not getting you anything for your birthday because 'It's only three weeks since Christmas) or outright never, ever marking it with even a card because 'It's greedy, you've just had your Christmas present', no parties as a kid - and therefore not being invited to anybody else's in return/revenge - and I think it's possibly the worst week of the year to be born.

I raise you January 4th… 10 days after Xmas, 4 days after NYE. No one wants to go out 😵‍💫

Mine is Boxing Day. I've always liked it. Makes me feel special! Also I'm always so caught up in planning for Christmas that I forget I've got a birthday in there too so that's fun. Plus with it being just after Christmas it postpones the post-Christmas blues.

I don't like 'and happy birthday' written in a Christmas card from people who would send separate ones to anyone else, or birthday presents wrapped in Christmas paper - if you wouldn't give me a card or gift for my birthday if it was in July, then that's fine, you don't need to give me one! But if it was in July you obviously wouldn't be wrapping it in Christmas paper or writing in a Christmas card so please at least treat it like a separate event like you would if it was at any other time of year.

My birthday is 23rd and I like it. People are always in a party mood, there's lots of buzz, I'm often off work and was almost always off school when I was younger. Good times.

Exactly the same way I feel about having my birthday on that date.

I know we all think differently but I could never wrap my head around those that feel upset about having their birthday close to Christmas.

nadine90 · 18/12/2024 19:13

My son's is the shortest day of the year. He loves it (he's a winter, dark cosy nights kind of person like me). He loves having double the money to spend after Christmas too so he can get something really good with it, plus everything's been discounted then too! We used to do parties earlier in December but the last few years he's just wanted a day out with me and his brother, and there's always something fun on to do.

JadeScroller · 18/12/2024 19:13

YANBU, it’s definitely the worst!

I’d pick a day in November to celebrate instead, and hopefully people will make more effort.

Yes I agree this is close to my friends , it sounds shit!

Try a birthday in the month that doesn't exist.... at least you get a comment....
Close enough to Christmas that everyone is still broke, especially following the longest month of the year (January).... it's cold, wet, miserable and dark.... people have Valentines to take their minds off things, even if it's just to complain about what a non event it is....
February birthdays don't exist... or realistically are forgotten about /non events.... not even the present for birthday and Christmas, or a comment 🙄
The same forgotten can remember everyone else's birthday and expect every minor anniversary remembered....
Can you tell i get annoyed about it? 🤔

Like OP, 17 was particularly bad as Nan got buried and so clearly birthday forgotten.... but to add insult to injury, it was all about my DB and random were giving him cash etc

It's my birthday today. And I hate it. Would happily just ignore it.

Too many Christmas parties and people are just busy.

Wishing you a very Happy Birthday! 🎊🎂🎉🥳🎈 I'm sorry it sucks 😔 , have you done anything nice for yourself today?

DS1 is the 23rd, he's 17 this year. I don't know if he minds that much. My DM is 29/12 so she has always been very sensitive not to do the joint present or present wrapped in Xmas paper thing as that happened to her.
DH is 11th January and hates it - everyone is skint, partied out and doing dry January!

Very! He spent 77 days in hospital before coming home at around 4lbs.

He's now 10 and one of the tallest in his class with size 5 feet 😂

He did well to get discharged so soon given how early he was! My prem baby is still the shortest boy in his class (and second shortest overall). But towards the top academically so that’s fine by me 🙂 can’t win at everything!

they’re amazing these tiny babies!

There was a brilliant line in a book by Tim Kennemore about someone whose birthday fell two days after her sister's: "Everyone had already used up their birthdayness" on her sister.

How funny. I think I might need that on a birthday card!

I get it! But I'm mid Jan. it's truly pants. At lest December birthdays people are cheery and looking forward to stuff.
Mid Jan means everyone is broke, all dieting/doing dry January/staying in.

Same!

Weather is pants, everyone is skint, payday was too long ago/too far away, on a post-Christmas diet, doing dry January, all partied out from Christmas and New Year.

DH’s is 23rd December - he says it sucked as a child, but he enjoys in now - everyone’s feeling festive, most of friends have broken up from work by then so are up for a night out.

Poppyredstar · 18/12/2024 19:05

For those following to hear interesting experiences ........So for me the worst ever birthday was my 17th , everyone forgot and I mean everyone! To be fair my mum did have 4 other children and Christmas was probably stressful for her. She also had a Christmas works do the evening before so was probably worse for wear 🤣 But this was the time before Mobile phones so not even a txt msg . No phone calls to the house from friends. No cards nothing. My mum realised in the afternoon she had forgotten amd she ran into the lounge and screamed omg we've all forgot your birthday!! A massive fuss was eventually made she managed to get a take away and rushed to shops , I got some random presents that year and we do all laugh about it now. My grandparents still remembered but they were away in Spain on holiday that year so we're saving my present for when I got back.
Another one was I was in a relationship with a man and it had all been really good up until then. His birthday was beginning of November I made a huge fuss, meal, presents a boozy night out after at a lovely cocktail bar. All on me of course as it was his birthday.
So what happened as my birthday approached? he said we had been invited to a Christmas party at his family's that evening so let's do that for your birthday... I also was bought some lingerie and expensive perfume... he said as he handed it over thisnos for your Christmas and Birthday... lovely! I didn't stay with him for much longer after that incident. I was young and niave now I would of told him I'm not happy right there and then!
I have had a good one which was my 40th and friends all made a massive effort and had a big party for me so I am grateful for that. That was rare 😂😂😂
