To not understand parents who go to Disneyland without their kids?

I know I'm being irrational. I know it's none of my business.

BUT.... I've seen a couple of friends over the last year or so, who have children the aged who'd enjoy Disney, and yet they go to Disney without their kids.

I cannot understand it!

I don't think they're (all) paedos.. ( I would probably enjoy it too if I had the money but would never without DC) BUT it does pave the way by having more adults without kids seen "as normal".

How about separate adults ands kids times/zones. It will make safeguarding easier for parents.

Safeguarding from what…?
I have yet to hear of a plethora of children being abused and kidnapped and trafficked in Disney. Photos of small children with Mickey Mouse aren’t all over the disgusting dark web.

It is perfectly fine for adults to enjoy things like this. It’s not my vibe but I don’t judge it as abnormal.
There is no known association between abuse of children and adults who attend Disney without children.

Many years ago, my mum and dad did a holiday to Orlando including Disney, to almost do a dry run before actually bringing along my sibling and I. Which they subsequently did many times. Said it was useful to get an idea of what to expect, what worked/didn’t.

Also said they’d never go to Disney without children again!

As I said this was a long time ago, early 00’s when that sort of trip didn’t cost absolutely outrageous money.

Upstartled · 19/12/2024 11:42

Of course it's weird. I don't know anyone who has or would do this. I suppose it's those odd adults who resent their children for disrupting their own perpetual childhood?

Floofboopsnootandbork · 19/12/2024 11:36

We went to Disney in Orlando with kids (not mine) and on day 3 I had a complete meltdown and asked my mum to lend me the money to get a flight home almost 2 weeks early 😂 I very obviously could not do that and had to give my head a wobble, after that my partner and I along with a couple of other kidless adults decided to separate occasionally from the family’s with kids and it suddenly got a lot better and I enjoyed the rest of the trip.

I would never go with kids again, not my own and not anyone else’s! For somewhere that has so much aimed at children it was not a great place to be with them, too stressful. Maybe when my kids are teenagers but until then I wouldn’t put myself through that again.

Just Disney land, as it is specifically promoted for kids. It's especially weird when the adults are dressed up in all the Disney "bling", somehow proving their commitment.

But you do realise there are lots of parts NOT aimed at kids? Several of the rides are more suitable for adults, some of the restaurants are very unchild friendly, champagne on Main Street, afternoon tea in the Disneyland Hotel etc. Going with and without kids are very different experiences.

Dueanamechange2025 · 19/12/2024 11:07

Is that the same for all theme parks or just Disneyland?

ACynicalDad · 19/12/2024 11:12

Utterly bonkers, see also those who go to theme parks with babies who will understand none of it.

CheeseSandwich2 · 16/12/2024 13:05

What’s an acceptable age to go to Disney then? Do people get too old?

You can go at any age but it is very odd (to put it nicely) to go without your (young/living at home) children. To put it less nicely, it is weird and unpleasant.

Adults who go to Disney land gives me the ick. It's quite pathetic really and they need to grow up

It’s mystifying to me why anyone would go there, even with their children. DS would adore to go to a Disney park, but I wouldn’t even contemplate it. Holidays are as much for me as my child.

Adults with no kids visiting - don't see an issue
Adults with kids, leaving them at home - yeah I'm silently judging.

It's very common on some of the Orlando fb groups to leave the baby/toddler at home while they trot off to Disney world.

My grandparents went when I was 6 and I was so offended. Can't imagine if it was my parents!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 16/12/2024 14:35

@LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway

I don't think the poster was judging adults who go to Disneyland without children - it was those who go without their own children when the children would have enjoyed going. There's a difference.

LolaLouise · 16/12/2024 14:33

I took my kids when little to disneyworld twice. First time they were 3 (girl) 5 (boy) and 8 (boy) and it was a nightmare. The smaller 2 were hot over tired over stimulated and a nightmare. We had maybe 3 good days out of the 14. Couldnt go on any rides easily which is all my eldest wanted to do, spent almost every day split as a family trying to keep everyone happy. Second time was 5 years later. It was better, however we discovered my then 8 year old hated rides and rollercoasters, my sons preferred universal by then, which is all rides and rollerocasters. So none were happy at the same time. My daughter still to this day hates rollercoasters.

Now, i would 100% go without them. Theres nostalgia to Disney and the other parks in Orlando, I enjoy the atmosphere of the parks, the food was amazing at some of the onsight resturants and totally wasted on younger children, the cocktails were good, great shopping, and i love rollercoasters. The hotels we stayed in were amazing. They may enjoy it now they are older, my sons probably more than my daughter, i couldnt just take 2 out of the 3, but i know I would enjoy it.

Dont know about Disneylands though, but World, without an ounce of guilt, id go without them.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 16/12/2024 14:31

Odd to me too.

I know there are adults who enjoy Disney and of course adults are free to go there without children - assuming those adults don't actually have kids, or have children that are too young or for whatever other reason wouldn't enjoy it. But yes - if those adults actually have children who would enjoy Disney parks I cannot understand why they would do that.

I've only been to DWP - are there activities at others that wouldn't be suitable for children?

People tend to fall into 3 camps on stuff like this (ditto lego, online gaming, festivals, anything that might be related to childhood or teenager-dom)

  • it's not my thing, but I get why you'd enjoy it
  • it's not my thing, and I dont understand why you'd enjoy it
  • it's not my thing, I don't understand why you'd enjoy it, and I think you are weird for liking it
I've never met anyone in the third camp who wasn't at least a little bit of a nightmare - the kind of person who gets in a huff because their old work colleague didn't text them to wish little Timmy a happy 12th birthday. You know the type. Follows 6 million made up social 'rules' to the letter, thinks anyone who doesn't is 'rude' and can't comprehend the thought of liking something they have deemed 'childish' because they 'like' things within an accepted realm of what they think they are supposed to like, have never even been remotely curious about anything else, and therefore think people are weird if they want something different. Lighthearted... mostly.

Thank you. I love Disneyland, and I am pretty old. I'd go with my DH if I can. It's a nostalgia thing, I love the songs and the rides. I wonder if it's an American thing, many adults in the US still enjoy Disneyland. You would see many adults still loving the merchandise which I do too. I don't find it weird, just like I still love Hello Kitty merchandise, I have more money to spend on the things I couldn't buy as a kid.

footballmum25 · 16/12/2024 14:21

We always go without the kids as we can’t go on rides together when they are there especially not the big rides. But we do always take the children there too on a separate trip so they don’t miss out

Maddy70 · 16/12/2024 14:21

Adult Disney is a very different experience than kiddy disney

I’m glad you said it last time we were in Florida. There were a few people male and female who looked as if they shouldn’t have been allowed in.

Why?

100% agree.

I think there's something weird about adults who go and hang around kiddies play areas, let alone going to a children's theme park.

I'm not concerned about child-free adults going to Disney, horses for courses and all that.

Parents going and leaving their kids at home is shitty, selfish behaviour. Baffles me that some people actually consider that decent parenting.
