What was your position on Amber Heard & Johnny Depp

I wonder if your feelings have changed since the trial?

I always viewed their situation as mutually toxic - they both abused and were abused. I honestly hated seeing people seemingly enjoying the tearing down and gaslighting of Amber. I think Amber did herself no favours. She’s clearly a narcissist and it was obvious when she was recounting her experiences. Very dramatic and forced. But I still believe she was hurt by Depp.

Johnny Depp has garnered so much good will for just being Johnny Depp. Not to mention the Children’s hospital visits. But multiple things can be true at once. He can be charitable with his time whilst also being an abuser.

Depp may never have hit Kate Moss. But that has no bearing on his relationship with Heard. In some relationships fighting is almost like foreplay. The emotion, passion etc can be addictive. It probably excited them both to fight and make up.

It is accepted Johnny Depp was addicted to both drugs and alcohol. In my experience, alcoholic men can be absolute monsters. I had an abusive father and the anger just came to the fore as soon as he drank.

Amber is back in the news and I just feel very sorry for her. I’m sure she played her part but I’m sure she was also hurt. Just chewed up and spat out.

Gone12 · 15/12/2024 22:47

Both as bad as each other.

TiredBefuddledRose · 15/12/2024 22:44

I used to believe Depp until I saw how the press turned on Blake Lively after Baldoni hired the same publicist that Depp did before the court stuff and the online attacks started.

CulturalNomad · 15/12/2024 22:39

Angelina is absolutely hammered in articles/forums for not allowing "poor Brad" access to the children. Barely mentioned is the reason why and in the comments it's always Angelina lying (and the teenagers presumably) and Angelina manipulating and Angelina being controlling over the kids. Never Brad being the one at fault

Almost scary how it was easier to call her a "crazy, lying bitch" than accept that in private Brad Pitt was nothing like his public image. "But he was soooo gorgeous in Legends of the Fall"🙄

Funny, he admitted in an interview that he got drunk every day for 40 years and his almost adult children want nothing whatsoever to do with him. But yeah, she's clearly the "crazy" one!

Ladamesansmerci · 15/12/2024 22:36

I believe her, and think any violence on her behalf may have been prompted by his violence and chronic drug/alcohol abuse.

The trial was vile. It was horrific watching the blatant misogyny be televised, and that should never be allowed to happen again.

Acrossthemountains · 15/12/2024 22:28

Him and Paul Bettany are both disgusting excuses for human beings - i used to like both of their films but haven't been able to watch them either of them again since they discussed what they would do to her.

I believe her and I'm not sure how he came out of it smelling of roses except that he has more money to throw at PR.

AelinAG · 15/12/2024 22:24

I think he probably always had tendencies towards alcohol and bad behaviour. But in his relationship with Vanessa he was happier, or there was no circumstance for it all to go to shit.

Whereas with Amber the toxic environment between them was just a powder keg.

I already disliked her because of all the press reports at the time they got together that she’d been very calculated in pulling him.

I think they were both to blame but on balance 75:25 with the much larger bit to Amber. As PP said, play stupid games and win stupid prizes. Plus her open lies in court, and the fact she had a history of abuse where Johnny did not.

Exactly this. Look at Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt. Abusive and attacked his family on a plane but carries on like nothing happened.

Exactly.

60:40 with Depp as the lesser

ouchwtf · 15/12/2024 22:07

Yeah I don’t think either of them came out if it well and the weird love-in for JD off the back of it was bizarre and unseemly.

Have you seen that clip of him sloshing down red wine and throwing his weight around, smacking doors shut and being generally ominous and threatening? It’s fucking horrible.

I think they were probably awful to each other and the relationship was toxic. But there was a huge power imbalance- he’s Jonny Depp and for some reason there’s a lot of goodwill towards him and always has been despite evidence of being a horrible human being long before he met AH. I feel sorry for her, I think she was telling the truth about what he did to her but she was no match for him and his PR team. I hope they’re getting paid well because they earn every penny. The messages between him and Paul Bettany about “raping her corpse and setting fire to it” being heavily glossed over is mind boggling to me.

Luckily she seems to have gone on to live a happy life away from him and create a family of her own. It’s a cliche but the best revenge is living well. In my experience that’s even truer when you’ve got a toxic ex.

Well said, I hope she is happy and enjoying her new life.

Hugge · 15/12/2024 22:01

I love how the people in the “Johnny Depp is a great guy” camp just happily overlook the fact he cheated on the mother of children with someone 20 years younger

I think they are both as bad as each other. The problem is with addicts is that they will never remember or believe how badly they treated you when they were drunk/high so he probably believes he is innocent.

notbelieved · 15/12/2024 21:56

I believe her. I don't think she's entirely guilt-free but to me, she was a woman who tried to fight back, who wanted to be heard, and so he used the power he had to destroy her. I hope she finds some peace in life.

Behindthethymes · 15/12/2024 21:56

I agree with the op - mutually toxic. My teenage dream was to marry JD, so it was all a bit of an eye opener how the other half live. At the time I thought he had very little self awareness to expose the depravity of his life to the world like he did, considering it was his reputation he was supposedly defending. It seemed like a spectacularly poor decision. But actually he seems to have had a much better grasp of the way the world works for famous men than I did. I find him utterly repellent but I’m in a tiny minority.

Amber is quite unlikeable and that counted heavily against her, and I’m a bit more sympathetic to her because of that. I don’t doubt that she was in an abusive situation but she was behaving abhorrently too. But the misogyny was awful to watch.

As an ordinary person I can’t quite grasp how either of them could air their dirty laundry so brazenly, never looking remotely sheepish at the grim, sordid details. It was bizarre.

ThisOldThang · 15/12/2024 21:55

She appears to have attempted to doctor email/messaging that was submitted as evidence in the trial. It didn't match the downloads from the counterparty's device and was deemed as inadmissible.

She's just not credible as a witness and the evidence strongly suggests she's a violent abuser.

KTheGrey · 15/12/2024 21:54

Also she cut his finger off. That is very naughty behaviour, and she could not produce any hospitalisation records for her injuries, which suggests they weren’t as bad.

KarmaKat · 15/12/2024 21:50

Hugge · 15/12/2024 20:55

society will never believe a woman over a man

Exactly this. Look at Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt. Abusive and attacked his family on a plane but carries on like nothing happened.

cantstopthefeeling · 15/12/2024 21:47

I believe her. He's the big star and had all the power. The only reason that there is anything saying she was difficult or just as bad is because it came from him, the person with money, power and control to create whatever narrative he wanted about her. She was ripped apart before she even started in court, she has never had a chance. And as for saying she was going for him in her op/ed piece and deserves all she gets, we are all behind victims calling out/ reporting their abusers and we all are behind the me too movement, but why not with her? Because he got ahead and did everything for his own credibility and to discredit her so we're all questioning her motives. Typical abuser behaviour by him. The texts and behaviour from JD that came out in the trial were misogynistic and disgusting. Given how coercive control works, it would not be surprising to find a lot happened we don't and won't ever know about. Those messages don't come from no where and a 'nice guy' doesn't just go there with messages. She was losing her income, she thought she could fight back after the UK case but his power and influence was too much. Just remember what we do know, what facts we heard, it's important to know that bots were actively used to promote negativity against her publicly throughout the trial and she suffered hugely as a result. I wish her well, and hope she can recover from what happened to her.

Livinginaclock · 15/12/2024 21:44

They're both bloody awful and anyone who thinks Johnny Depp is great is a huge misogynist.

MilitantFawcett · 15/12/2024 21:44

I wanted to believe he was a good guy but his behaviour in court (and his texts) was that of every abusive addict I’ve ever seen. As others have said, she was unlikeable and their relationship appeared deeply toxic, so the bot army could do their worst. Nonetheless, as the S*n libel case demonstrated, he is a wife-beater so overall, I believe her.

teatoast8 · 15/12/2024 21:43

Supersimkin7 · 15/12/2024 21:41

Amber overplayed her hand.

They were both ‘keen party types’ who were rich enough to get away with bad behaviour inc physical fights & drunk
at breakfast.

She blew it by presenting herself as a saint when she often punched him first. She’s bigger than he is. And drank as much as he did.

Team Johnny here; I don’t know anyone who turns violent aged 56. I really don’t know anyone who can spend years with an addict and not notice till after the wedding.

Touch of St Meghan the Martyr, with added ham.

I'm team Johnny too

NoGwenItsABoxingDayTrifle · 15/12/2024 21:43

I didn't watch the trial, But from the documentary I watched about the pair of them my opinion is they were abusive to each other. Society seems to find his abuse to her forgivable but don't give her the same leeway. I have no idea why but it's depressing and seems riddled with misogyny.

Rainbowqueeen · 15/12/2024 21:42

The difference in how they were treated is a real reflection of how society treats men and women and why women are reluctant to press charges against men who assault them.

She definitely has issues but the whole thing was unbalanced and unfair and I feel deeply sorry for her despite her issues. Him I never wish to see again. He knew he had more power than her and he used that.
