To not want to drop my hours when DS starts school?

But I think I’ll have to.

I am currently part time with two days off a week. I’d like to keep this as I have a younger child.

My younger child’s nursery starts at 730. I’d have to drop her then at this time. Then get to DS school for beakfast club to start at 8. This gives me twenty five minutes to get to work myself, through heavy morning traffic. DH can’t help: he leaves for work at 7.

I think typing that out has made me realise I’ll have to drop my hours.

This thread 😂

@DandySnail if I request to start an hour later three times a week that is three hours, or half a day. Not half an hour.

The school is not in walking distance; no school is.

@SaagAloopa eventually we will. The next years are precious though, twee as that sounds.

@Delphiniumandlupins i teach so unfortunately I can’t do that. If I drop half a day and I’ll have to I think, it’ll be starting an hour later three times a week so I miss first period basically.

the school is one you drive to rather than walk?

I often drive to school that’s 2 roads away…… because I’m going on somewhere, and if I had to walk back to get the car, I would then be late.

OP I’d start at 9:30 and then get DH to change his end time so he can do pickup, from after school club if necessary.

The reason I don’t want to do that while DD is below school age is because I do value the time I have with her. If it came to it I’d rather have two days a week with her than drop a day. (Plus nursery costs would be higher if I’m paying for four days but only working three.)

You could value 1 day too though and have more relaxed mornings

mindyourfingersplease · 14/12/2024 16:32

Than my start time.

If my start time is 825, that’s when I need to be there. If I adjust it to 925, that’s also when I need to be there.

so it’s reducing hours by very very little? we’re talking half hour?

Do that then for 4 days?

Delphiniumandlupins · 14/12/2024 16:33

mindyourfingersplease · 14/12/2024 16:25

Right, so I drop three hours (half a day) so I start an hour later on my working days, meaning I work two and a half rather than three days. That’s not ‘jacking in.’ If you don’t understand that I can’t really help any further.

Could you start half an hour later and shorten your lunch break so that you work the same number of hours?

SaagAloopa · 14/12/2024 16:32

Mickey79 · 14/12/2024 16:19

This makes the most sense and is what most people would do.

Yeah I did that.

t. I have to start on time. I can’t just be five or ten minutes late.

why don’t you speak to manager and suggest 15 mins later start and 15 mins more at the end of the day?
mor you can’t start 5 mins late but you can an hour late?

Do you share money OP because if you can’t have any flexibility and are having to do this for him surely you should be

mindyourfingersplease · 14/12/2024 16:25

DandySnail · 14/12/2024 16:23

she can’t drop hours

says that she can’t even be 5 mins late

critical that starts on time

At no point has she said she will quit, your earlier post is ridiculous putting words in her mouth, what the fuck is your problem?

so because you’re daughter is settled at a nursery she will be at for a short period of time

you will jack in a job?

I’m not sure why you’ve posted, OP. People have given the usual suggestions and you’ve shot them down.

childminder, nanny, your DH. That’s it.

Probably because the usual answers are obvious so probably ones OP has already thought of and dismissed before posting on Mumsnet.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 14/12/2024 16:21

Not if you were working 4 days and paying for 4 days, but shorter days so you can drop off first.

needmorecoffeeandcake · 14/12/2024 16:21

Will your husband contribute to a pension for you? It’s not just about now. It’s about your future.

Can you start work a little later?

DandySnail · 14/12/2024 16:16

a different nursery?!

What would that solve?

I feel like I’m answering a totally different thread😂

DDs nursery is the closest to DSs school. It’s a rural area. Things are spread out.

OP posts:
TeamMandrake · 14/12/2024 16:19

OP - some people literally cannot comprehend that there are areas of the country with zero childminder available, and no one on sitter.com within 30 miles. They assume you are just not trying hard enough.

From my point of view, you are lucky you have a breakfast club at your school at all. If you can tweak your hours slightly for a later start then that's ideal. Having to reduce hours when your DC start school is really common. Or you could add a day at nursery, and spread your hours over fewer days, if that's a possibility.

Mickey79 · 14/12/2024 16:19

Thomasthe · 14/12/2024 16:11

Could you keep the same number of hours but do them split over 4 days instead of 3? So you could start at say 9:30

This makes the most sense and is what most people would do.

mindyourfingersplease · 14/12/2024 16:18

DandySnail · 14/12/2024 16:09

because i suspect this OP wants to jack in job but dh not keen

How have you managed to get this from me saying I don’t want to drop my hours!?

Besides, I won’t be ‘jacking in my job’, whatever happens. I will probably have to drop half a day for the next couple of years, that’s it. Just could do with the money so I’d prefer not to!

There is no childminder. Not sure why you’re being such an arse to the OP 🤔

a different nursery?!
