sitting in costa coffee

Went to costa coffee ordered drinks, sandwiches & cake. Myself & partner said we will eat in rather than take away. Place was full most seats were taken apart from a four seater table where some woman was sat. I asked if the seats on her table were taken and she said we can not sit on her table as she is with her DS.
In the end a chinese couple offered their seats and we eventually got a seat.
AIBU expecting a seat on womans table for me and my partner as no one was sat in them?

The only thing anyone left to say now is that when they attend a cafe they demand the staff shoo all the other customers out and lock the doors just in case someone had the temerity to breathe within 50ft of them. Once served with their required refreshments then the staff have to fuck off too.

They are not public places though.

How the hell are they not "public places"??? They get their business from, oh, the public!!??

No I don't just engage in essential experiences but if I am doing something for pleasure I do my best not to do it at the expense of someone else's enjoyment. Plenty of people would not want to bother having a coffee in a cafe if it means sitting with strangers so there is no way I would impose myself.

I don't know why you keep bleating on about "essential experiences" - what do you deem, "essential"?

You don't have to "impose" yourself either. You can ask, "do you mind if I sit here?", you can keep your distance from the other person and you can respect their privacy by not engaging them in conversation.

Erm, make this make sense?

The cafe is open to the public, the same as the train, the bus, the aeroplane...

Yes, but the owner / manager of the cafe has the right to refuse service and ask people to leave.

It’s just the law.

wombat15 · 15/12/2024 00:40

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 14/12/2024 23:55

Do you also say the same to the people on their own who want the table to themselves? 'Going to a cafe is not an essential experience!' and 'you don't HAVE to go!' and 'you could always find one waaaaay less busy!'

No. I thought not.

.

Edited

If a person on their own has found a table then they don't need to find a less busy cafe because they have already found one with a free table.

If the cafe tells you to vacate a seat or to leave the cafe then you have to do what they say.

Do you actually believe that these people would really behave like that IRL? I doubt it. It's easy to act the big man (or woman) online!

Play stupid games win stupid prizes. Go have a read of how aggressive LikeWho was saying she would be. In that scenario, yes, police should be called on her.

Here we can laugh but in real life that aggression is not pretty.

Nah, I have loads of friends, but I'm not arrogant enough to think that everyone else is in the same position.

A PP literally described her life circumstances and the difficulties of making/maintaining friendships and you still come out with that tone deaf bollocks!

Do you only engage in "essential experiences"??? FFS!

TF I don't like Costa. Not keen on Starbucks either or any of the chains.

While I agree that a perfect world in which manners are always prioritised would be lovely, it is not the case. It’s unfortunately naive to think other people will abide by etiquette or have any consideration for the people around them. It really is just down to who is willing to take advantage of opportunity and who isn’t. Opportunity over decorum. Rude, sure, but what else would you expect from people?

Also, I wrote with a mix of “slang” and proper English simply because I wanted to. That’s really all.

Edited

So do you also push into queues?

I did but the idea of calling the police is juvenile in the extreme.

Sure, this thread has made me laugh too.

I’ve said a few times that I’d be fine with sharing a table with a stranger if needed.

And how I’ve laughed when a family of 3 wanted to join me and DH on our table for 4.

But in real life the aggressive posters would not be funny.

BelperLawnmower · 15/12/2024 00:19

I love these threads! They basically contain the arguments and bitchy comments that people would like to have in the café when these situations arise, but are too polite/anxious to.

When I find myself (usually as a single customer) in @IveGotToGoToMeDads 's position I smile and sit down in an empty seat regardless of who else is at the table. No one has told me off yet.

They are both public places.

If there's space at your table, then that space is fair game.

If you don't like that, then don't go to a cafe, or go when it's quieter.

You see, that argument works both ways!

People go on a train to get from A-B. And even when someone buys a ticket, they are not owed a seat. I have had to miss trains because there was no space.
People go to cafes for all sorts of reasons. If there is no space, you can go elsewhere.

Yeah, I don't fancy her chances when you can't get the police to attend RTAs or burglaries. They'd laugh their heads off!
