Christmas Album recommendations

I’m sure we’ve all got a Michael Ball or Buble Christmas album, but what other Christmas albums are good to listen to?

My contribution is Jamie Callum’s ‘ Piano Man at Christmas’. Some gorgeous original songs, and it’s become my default ‘wrapping Christmas present up’ music. (And you don’t have to be a jazz lover to enjoy it).

Nick Lowe - Quality Street (a seasonal selection for all the family)

If you want a laugh there is a totally insane Bob Dylan Christmas album. Genuinely hilarious and cracks us up every year.

hopelessatthinkingupusernames · 12/12/2024 21:15

Lindsey Stirling has 2 Christmas albums and they are a gorgeous mix of instrumental and sing a long songs

Swanlake98 · 12/12/2024 20:52

Love everything Christmas here.
May I suggest …..
Twisted Sister - A Twisted Christmas
Rob Halford - Winter Songs
Sarah McLachlan - Wintersong

FranKatzenjammer · 12/12/2024 20:39

Yes to Kate Rusby, Tracey Thorn, Emmy the Great & Tim Wheeler, and Libera.

Also, Glasvegas.

This Phil Spector one

Absolutely my favourite, well worth a listen and still relevant today. You have to ignore Phil Spector’s closing of the album, but the artist’s performances are spectacular and so is the production, just imagine Phil had nothing to do with it.

I asked for the vinyl a couple of years back expecting to get the 60s issue with the original cover, but my partner unknowingly got me the 1970s reissue, complete with weirdo Phil Spector dressed as Santa (shudder!)

Just started working through the suggestions. I’d forgotten what a lovely voice John Denver has. Lovely album.

I did mean to say "has one" rather than "husband" but glad it was intelligible

This Phil Spector one

Carols from King's. Beautiful.

Has annie lennox christmas cornucopia been mentioned? Gorgeous voice.

Have bought andrea corr for DM this christmas. I buy a new one every year. Last year was dolly parton.

Moier · 12/12/2024 18:42

I love this Rod Stewart one.
Played it today while finishing the Christmas decorations.

TheOnlyMooncat · 12/12/2024 18:41

Ooh I recommend Almost a Full Moon by Hawksley Workman. All original songs except for Silent Night. I was gonna mention my favourite songs but I can't narrow it down 😂 Maybe 3 Generations? Or First Snow of the Year. Or Learn How to Knit. Nope, can't choose 🤷🏻‍♀️

Barenaked Ladies - Barenaked for the Holidays

Has an amazing song featuring Bublé about elves complaining about their working conditions 😄

Some songs are beautiful, some are silly, some relatable. They also have Hanukkah songs on it.

Highly recommend.

Oh also the Very Special Christmas series has a lot of good songs. Some original some covers.

I love Oi To The World by No Doubt the most. SUCH A BANGER.

Edited

HUGE fan of Barenaked for the Holidays. Had it on earlier!

Snowed In - a Hanson album.

I LOVED this ! Also love ‘finally it’s Christmas’

Several of my favourites (Josh Groban, Boney M) have been mentioned above, so I'll add Bocelli Family Christmas to the list.

And for the John Denver fans, his collaboration with The Muppets!

LunaNorth · 12/12/2024 16:15

Gregory Porter’s Christmas Wish is lovely.

Nat King Cole Merry Christmas

My favourite carol is Huron Carole (Twas in the Moon of Wintertime), the first Canadian carol, written in 1643. I grew up to Tom Jackson singing it, but have heard the Sarah McLaulan version in Wonderland which is good

I only found out about this carol a couple of days ago thanks to this beautiful version:

The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album and Smith and Burrows, Funny Looking Angels.

More generally wintery than Christmassy, but also Fleet Foxes’ debut album and Kate Bush, 50 Words for Snow.

Vettrianofan · 12/12/2024 14:56

Thank you to those recommending Carols from King's. Really enjoying this 👍😊

FuckItItsFine · 12/12/2024 14:56

HOW could I forget the bonus Christmas CD that came with Girls Aloud’s Chemistry album?! Aka “Christmastry”

Not Tonight Santa, I Wanna Kiss You So, Christmas Round At Ours and Count The Days are the highlights.

GrouchyKiwi · 12/12/2024 14:52

My faves are the aforementioned Annie Lennox Christmas Cornucopia, Josh Groban's Noel (the deluxe version because it has O Holy Night and his version is the best best of that song), Bing Crosby's album (don't remember what it's called), and Diana Krall's Christmas Songs.

I also love Boney M's Christmas, because who doesn't love disco versions of Christmas carols?

I used to play A Christmas Gift For You from Phil Spector - not sure if he’s now been cancelled or not though

I also love this, in spite of PS.
Parade of the wooden soldiers is so great.

I have a massive long playlist on Spotify that I've put together over lots of years which includes a wide range of music, so that's my go to, but some great suggestions on here. I am particularly loving the ultra lounge Christmas cocktails recommendation from @Summersongroses.

WokeKarenHereAskMeAboutStuff · 12/12/2024 14:36

Kelly Clarkson - Wrapped in red.
Her voice suits so well for holiday songs, lovely album!

Not the second christmas album, though - when christmas comes around, that was so disappointing album ☹️

SummaLuvin · 12/12/2024 14:04

it's only 6 tracks but Sabrina Carpenters EP Fruitcake is great and really well balanced considering the length - 4 original songs, 1 Christmas version of her hit Nonsense, 1 cover, some really fun upbeat ones and slower more melancholy.

Kylies Christmas album is also cracking.

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/12/2024 14:02

Oh yes, we always play creepy old Phil Spector at Christmas.
