This is the 18 year old lad who had a holiday romance with a 17 year old girl in Dubai. She was just short of 18.

her parents found out and reported him to the Dubai authorities before he returned home.

his poor parents aren’t well off and had to return home to work leaving him there.

he’s now been sentenced to 1 year in prison.

aibu to think this poor boy should never have been brought before court.

Maybe if laws were so well enforced in the UK it would address some of the social problems we have here

So you think all social problems would se sorted if we imprisoned 16 year old boys having sex with 15 year old girls? Don’t be so ridiculous!

Maybe if the police didn’t turn a blind eye to grown men having sex with children for years because of “community sensitivities” it would be a start

Aren't raped women branded as adulterers? This happened to a British woman a few years ago who reported her rape in Dubai. All involved were British holiday-makers.

British woman 'arrested in Dubai after reporting rape'

A British woman is reportedly accused of extra-marital sex in Dubai after she reports being raped.

Where did you live with such big social problems? Equally, medieval legal systems and limited human rights is luckily something the UK does not celebrate!

It also sounds like the mother of the girl was hazy about the consequences of reporting this in Dubai.

I don't believe that for one minute.

Extra-marital sex, I imagine.

Which is not a crime. Sex between 2 unmarried people is not a crime

In Dubai they arrest women who are raped. Look it up. This girl would definitely have gone to prison too if it had been reported while she was still in the country.

Dubai laws are so archaic

There is some real empathy on this thread isn't there?! My goodness.

The poor lad is a child, have you never done anything inadvisable as a teen?

And for those of you braying about how it's the law - did you look up the laws of the country when you went on holidays as a young person? Of course you didn't. Why would you, he would have trusted it was safe, he was with his parents.

If anyone is to blame they are for not properly researching the destination and telling him what's what.

Really sad situation, I'm relived he's"only" got a year but that could be life changing. God only knows what prisons are like there. I hope somehow he can be released to UK custody.

I think a lot of people are lying or have a lack of empathy because they cannot see themselves or their sons in this kid.

I know when I did my Greek island extravaganza as a 19 year old it never occurred to me to research “the age of consent on Mykonos.”

If it was their son their tune would change.

This says girl and him are from London - not seen any article saying she or that her mother is Dubai only seen that stated on here on previous thread it was stated she was from a strict Indian family - so I've no idea what the girls background is - and if she being raised in London as is apparently UK citizen how much that make any of this understandable.

Radha Stirling, the founder and chief executive of Detained in Dubai, said Fakana, who has been unable to leave the country since September, was "desperately hoping" to return home this week.
"But prosecutorial mishandling in the first stages of the case meant it wasn't heard as a misdemeanour when it should have been," she said.
"The family have issued a plea to Dubai ruler HH Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum to spare Marcus for consensual sex with another British citizen."

Sounds like he was very unlucky to get reported and the support group think he was unlucky in it's handling and it could have been treated more leniently.

It also sounds like the mother of the girl was hazy about the consequences of reporting this in Dubai.

Bloody hell. The hate for UAE is so sttong that people argue that getting nicked after having sex with under age of consent person is wrong

Let’s be clear what we mean by “under the age of consent”.

He was 18, she was 17 but 3 months younger. Context matters. You are writing it as if he had sex with a 12 year old.

(and these were both young Brits so likely did not even research to see that what they were doing was illegal)

MsCactus · 11/12/2024 15:55

Grammarnut · 11/12/2024 15:54

She committed no offence. She was the victim.

Yes but in Dubai there's cases of them imprisoning women who are raped, victims of sexual assault etc. They would still have arrested and sentenced her in this instance

The Mum is from Dubai she isn't from London.

Nothing but pure racism! I hope that the vindictive mother one day has the same experience of someone going out of their way to be vindictive to her in the future when she makes a mistake

What goes around one day will come around

The girl is considered a victim. So not really.
Like do you consider arresting 14 year old in UKif she has sex with16 year old or is it just the 16 year old who is in trouble. Samw principle.

Great, absolutely no bearing on this tho. Uk doesn't afaik

The UK has a convention of generally not prosecuting children close in age, but no actual law preventing it.

Grammarnut · 11/12/2024 15:48

If you visit a country you must abide by its laws. He should not have embarked on a romance with an under age girl and must take the consequences. His parents could ask the Foreign Office to request the young man's return to serve his sentence in the UK - though I am not sure that would be any better.
What happened, however, is also a warning about visiting countries with retarded laws - never visit Dubai, or anywhere like it.

Edited

I don't think there could be much worse than a young black boy in prison in Dubai. The racism and classism there is off the scale. Just look at who they use for slave labour.

I'm sorry but when you travel abroad you should know the really big obvious cultural differences that are well-documented. Age of consent and when sex is legal are the first things you should check before travelling and having sex. It's very well known that extramarital sex or premarital sex is forbidden in UAE. For another example, if he'd done it in the US he could have been prosecuted for statutory rape. Her parents were twats though.

Even in the states where you can marry at 14?

Connected1 · 11/12/2024 15:53

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/12/2024 14:51

He broke the law.

should foreign tourists who break the law when visiting the UK get away with it?

I live in Ireland.
Homosexual acts —by men— were a crime here until 1993.

Do you really think that a visiting British couple should have been prosecuted (never mind imprisoned) here for gay sex ?

JHound · 11/12/2024 15:53

TickingAlongNicely · 11/12/2024 14:04

On one hand, it seems ridiculous.

On the other hand... if a foreigner had committed a crime against a woman in the UK, that wasn't a crime in their home country, there would be outcry if he was just deported.

So we can't have it both ways.

a) Both the girl and the guy are UK nationals.
b) It would really depend on the “crime”.

These were two teens months apart who had sex.

To use your example if a 16 year old boy from Germany had sex with a German girl who was 15 and 9 months in the UK, I really don’t think there would be an “outcry” if he got off.

UK does. A 16 year old having sex with a 14 year old is not likely to be prosecuted or put on the sex offenders' register. It's just not codified.

FuckILookLike · 11/12/2024 15:52

Lincoln24 · 11/12/2024 14:47

The equivalent situation would be a 16 year old tourist having consensual sex with a 15 year old tourist. You're living on another planet if you think the authorities here would be remotely interested in that scenario.

I hope the mother who reported this poor boy is feeling pleased with herself.

Literally!! Do you think there would even be charges pressed let alone a whole prison sentence. I really don’t know why that poster used the UK as a comparison as it makes no sense

HunterdeButts · 11/12/2024 15:52

nfk · 11/12/2024 15:13

No, they'll be fine. The laws are specifically for extramarital intercourse.

Anyone who is legally married, of whatever age, is not committing an offence provided the person they have sex with is their own spouse.

Is that how local men get away with having sex with minors? They marry them first.

JusteanBiscuits · 11/12/2024 15:51

TheYeaSayer · 11/12/2024 14:38

I feel sorry for him. He broke the law, but his punishment seems completely disproportionate. I wouldn't go to Dubai if you paid me.

But to the poster saying he's in the same boat as if he were in the US where they have the same age of consent (not everywhere, actually, it varies state to state) do you really think 18YO men are routinely imprisoned in the USA - for a year - for having sex with their almost 18YO girlfriends?
They're not.

In 10 states of the US the age of consent, as long as the other person is a similar age, is 13. Only 5 states have an age of consent as 18 with no other factors (such as other person being in a position of power).
