Adult child has to make their bed before going to work

jtyy5 · 09/12/2024 17:42

It is my parents house so I follow their rules and I have no intention of bringing this up.

I am 24 and live with my parents, it is a house rule that I have to make my bed before going to work.

Is this a silly rule or setting a good example?

Turn the light on?

I can't imagine spending so much time on my landing that this would bother me

Edited

Oh ffs! It's not so unreasonable to want to have a bit of daylight!

I don't have windows on my landing. So it is dark upstairs.

I think it’s silly. But I also think it’s pretty shocking that an adult needs to be told to make their bed.

AgathaLioness · 09/12/2024 19:09

Depends if you mean full on making the bed, tucking everything in etc, or a quick straightening up of everything and flipping duvet back which takes 20 seconds.
But if you're going to argue with them over a 20 second job then you aren't acting as 'adult' as you think you are

Might seem silly but it’s a good habit to gain which you will probably be grateful for when you are older.

She's 24.

Lalalaking · 09/12/2024 19:08

Certainly never a rule in our house!Sounds controlling and pretty gross not airing bed
I don't think I have made my bed today..do I care ? Nope!

I have windows on my landings only purposes for doors open would be for snoopers.

Every room up stairs has its own opening window including the landing.

SuperfluousHen · 09/12/2024 19:08

When you have your own house you can make or not make your bed when you want.

AGoingConcern · 09/12/2024 19:08

Are there younger children in the house and they’re asking you to stick to the same standards as everyone else living there? That’s not particularly unreasonable IMO.

Either way…I’m not a bed making person and this isn’t a battle I’ve chosen to fight as a parent, but I also wouldn’t take a stand on this in your situation. If you consider what you’re saving in housing/food costs living there I suspect you’re effectively being paid a rather plush amount for each second of bed making.

The OP is asking if it’s a silly rule, not if making one’s bed is silly.

I know that. But it would only be a silly rule if making your bed was silly 🤷‍♀️

GreenEggs483 · 09/12/2024 18:55

Yes, this! I prefer doors open in my house. If everyone's is closed it makes everything too dark upstairs.
Also, seems some young adults need reminding to open their windows occasionally too.
Whether OP pays rent or not, it's her parents' house and they are entitled to set expectations as they see fit. Equally, OP is entitled to find her own place if she doesn't like it.

What's so silly about making your bed in the morning?

The OP is asking if it’s a silly rule, not if making one’s bed is silly.

AnyoneSomeone · 09/12/2024 19:05

Does it stop becoming youir home when you turn 18? Do you become a paying guest then? All this it's the parents house bollocks. I've never read such nonsense in my life.

Doingmybest12 · 09/12/2024 19:03

It's not really the wish to have the bed made that's a problem. Its more about how they are policing this. Surely if your door is shut they don't know. Which makes me think they must be invading your space and doing daily checks ,then giving you grief if the duvets not pulled over which is not a reasonable way to treat another adult. If they can't stop the checking then you ll need to move out.

Netcam · 09/12/2024 19:00

I think it's a difficult one, we all pick our own battles. I wouldn't ask DS 17 and 20 to make their beds, because that's not something that bothers me.

I rarely go in their rooms but I do expect them to keep them reasonably clean, change their sheets, put their rubbish in the bin, hoover once in a while and bring dirty plates and cups down to the dishwasher. If I notice it gets too disgusting in there, I start to complain.

I do pull back our own duvet to air during the day, because I prefer it to be aired. I also straighten the sheets before bed as I don't like them creased.

I do, however, enforce the rule of no shoes in the house and am not happy if people drag their muddy shoes through the hall.

DS think I'm OTT about this but it's something that bothers me, especially since I'm the only one who ever cleans the floor. At the end of the day that's one of the house rules, when DS1 is away at uni he can do what he likes, but when he's home I expect him to respect the house rules.

Sandramapple · 09/12/2024 18:59

Move out if you want more independence. What are the reasons that you're still at home?
When I moved out at 18, I never moved back with my parents.

GCAcademic · 09/12/2024 17:45

When else would you make your bed if not in the morning?

When I get home from work, if I've been in the office so day. It needs to air.

If I'm WFH I'll usually do it after the school run or at lunchtime. Duvet back, window open a bit, for at least an hour.

ACynicalDad · 09/12/2024 18:57

I'd respect my parents who are giving a roof

Closed bedroom doors can lead to mold/mildew. It certainly darkens hallways. Low lighting can affect mood as does a messy unmade bed.

Leaving your bed unmade all day is slovenly.

Diggingdeepstayingstrong · 09/12/2024 18:52

kiraric · 09/12/2024 18:27

What?

My bedsheets are never damp and sweaty

Menopause here 😆

Daschund · 09/12/2024 18:51

The only thing I insist on is bedroom doors are closed when they're out because my cheeky puppy likes to chew, the more expensive the better, if allowed. I won't be held responsible if it's in their rooms. I couldn't care less if the bed isn't made.
Your problem is at 24 you're old enough to leave if you take issue with a task that takes all of thirty seconds.

2025willbemytime · 09/12/2024 18:50

It's so much better to leave the quilt pushed back off the mattress each morning.

MyLoyalEagle · 09/12/2024 18:49

I am a big big surprised that, most people here seemingly don't make the the beds in the morning, as an adult myself I no need any rules from parents nor anyone else to do so.
