How depressingly self-serving of them.

Of who?

Your partner needs to stay and help rebuild the country so all those here illegally can return.

The general international view on Syrian refugees is that things are now safer, not less safe. I'm not trying to justify this or state it is my view, but that is the general position. The UK and many EU countries have suspended asylum decisions.

All the Syria CPINs (the Home Office detailed guidance about asylum-producing countries on various topics) have been withdrawn. The UNHRC has approved the suspension - its approval isn't required in any way, and if it didn't approve that wouldn't automatically help Syrian asylum applicants in the UK, but their approval makes the decision to suspend harder to challenge.

"UNHCR takes note of the decision by a number of States who have suspended asylum decision-making on Syrian claims for international protection, until such time as the situation in the country has stabilized and reliable information about the security and human rights situation is available to assess the international protection needs of individual applicants.
In light of the uncertain and highly fluid situation the suspension of processing of asylum applications from Syrians is acceptable as long as people can apply for asylum and are able to lodge asylum applications.
Once conditions in Syria are clearer, UNHCR will also provide guidance to States on the international protection needs of relevant profiles of Syrians at risk. "

Well yes of course, Assad, trained as a medic in London, promised reform, he was seen as a new start and different from his father.

He turned out to be just as bad.

There are at least 5 factions vying for power in Syria, can and probably will not go well.

the Israelis certainly seem to think so.

We (U.K. & US) weren’t ever supporting the Assad regime in Syria.
We have been sanctioning Syria for the entire Assad regime.
We have been funding the non terrorist rebels starting from when they were fighting ISIS to covertly funding them after ISIS was defeated.
We voted for UN resolution 2254 sanctioning the Assad violation of human rights…back in 2015.

You might want to fact check whatever propaganda source is telling you things like “our government supported Assad” as proof of protesters being manipulated by an antisemitic agenda and falling for propaganda.

Btw, I am a Jewish woman. I’ve informed mumsnet of this before, but it helps to post a reminder now and then.

“Btw, I am a Jewish woman. I’ve informed mumsnet of this before, but it helps to post a reminder now and then.” this is one of the weirdest things I’ve ever read on Mumsnet. Do you honestly think anyone remembers you? If you think it’s important to you for people to know for whatever reason you really shouldn’t rely on thinking people have stored any information about you from anything you have said previously, you really should just state it in each post.

When Assad first came to power he was being courted by several western leaders who saw him as a potential game changer in the Middle East.

Approximately 3000 Syrians came across in boats in 2022 - would they be classed as illegals?

Impossible to say. If they claimed asylum and asylum (or another status, for example, humanitarian protection, Article 8 ECHR) has been granted, no. If they are awaiting a decision on an asylum, yes, but they can't be removed until the claim has been determined. If the asylum claim has been decided and a protection visa granted, definitely not illegals. There will be some claims made in 2022 which haven't been decided by the Home Office yet, though.

So where were all the marches, the outcry in the media, the flags when our government was supporting Syria. Yes people can be angry about any war, but there seems to be an over coverage of Israel, all very one sided. People are being manipulated by people with an antisemitic agenda. They might think they are looking at evidence but they are being swayed by propoganda

@feelingitnow support for Palestine does not mean support for Hamas - it is incredibly insulting to assume they are "foot soldiers for anti-semitism" - people can use their critical faculties to abhor the actions of the Israeli government without being anti-Semitic, and it is this assumption that we cannot criticise Israel without our motives being questioned that stifles debate. Of course anti-Semitism exists and has grown since the current conflict. But there are many of us who see no peaceful future while either Netanyahu's government or Hamas are in power, and are disturbed by our goverment's willingness to keep supporting an increasing out-of-control regime. Yes, you are right that the UK is involved in pretty much every conflict, but not always on the side of an aggressive and repressive regime (post 2011 we did not support Assad, although I agree we came to the conclusion pretty late) and not always as overtly.

We after all took in many Ukrainian refugees indefinitely

The visas for Ukrainian refugees were issued for 3 years - which can be extended by 18 months from 2025.

Clavinova · 10/12/2024 13:06

I just googled the UK’s number of refugees it’s 231,500, so quite a bit less than 4 million so I wouldn’t say it’s a similar scale

UNHCR's 'nowcasting' estimates for the UK are 483,900 refugees or 606,100 refugees and asylum seekers combined. The estimates for Turkey are nearer 3 million than 4 million. The repatriation of Syrian refugees from Turkey to Syria is one of Erdogan's objectives.

gloriagloria · 10/12/2024 12:05

@LondonLawyer yes that's true - to be honest I was just irritated by the assumption that Syrians would be "illegal" by the previous post, whereas in actual fact very few are and will be somewhere in the asylum process.

Why would you be irritated by that though?

Why the need for everyone out there to share your belief that no Syrian can possibly be doing anything illegal?

Until today Syrians could claim asylum so were not “illegals” but I’m sure you know that and are just trying to be offensive and provocative.

They aren't mutually exclusive. Syrians can claim asylum (asylum decisions have been paused, not applications) but anyone can claim asylum, it's just not everyone will be granted it. If someone is in the UK illegally and could claim asylum, he is still here illegally despite the possibility of claiming asylum, and even if he's very likely to be granted it.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 10/12/2024 11:42

When rebel groups overturn a government, it’s called an uprising.

HTH.

jasjas3008 · 10/12/2024 11:23

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 10/12/2024 11:11

So mass uprising that was armed?

Yes, clearly, it can be done.

It wasn't a mass uprising, the people of Damascus Aleppo etc were "freed" (yet to be decided) by external forces and Russia could no longer defend Assad.

And who armed these rebels, where did they come from? what will they do next?

Like i said, mass uprisings rarely work, can it be done? yes but this isn't what has happened in Syria.

the IDFs involvement now could turn a bad situation to an even worse one.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 10/12/2024 11:15

Also, Assad had more than a few rusty muskets.

Apparently the US and Israel have been busy weapons of al
descriptions in the last couple of days, so it was not lack of weapons that toppled Assad.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 10/12/2024 11:11

jasjas3008 · 10/12/2024 11:08

Nope Russia hasn't the means to support Assad, due to Ukraine now and this wasn't a mass uprising, it was an armed force, comprised mostly of former Al Qaeda operatives.
There are at least another 4 armed groupings in Syria.

Israeli tanks now 20 miles from Damascus....

Yes mass up risings can happen in countries in days gone by, when the oppressor had a few muskets but not when they have modern weapons of war and use mass terror & misinformation to keep a population down, look at Putins Russia

Your argument works against you.

If mass uprisings are a thing of the past then how did the current one against Assad succeed? He had modern weapons and the support of Putin.

& how is that working out in HK, Myanmar, Iran and Afghanistan?

Or even in Syria when Assad used chemical weapons and Russia supported him, using bombs and artillery on unarmed civilians.

I couldn't understand your previous post, hence word salad, you ve done it again, using company instead of "country" maybe re read what you ve written?

Well clearly you could understand it. As you have told me the post had company rather than country lol. Your general lack of comprehension skills are not my problem.

You really are going for the full house, though in empty comments trying to undermine a position that you can’t argue against. Tell you what “there going to have to go back their to they’re country”. Go on go for it, get that full house!!!

Mmm maybe the lads in the trenches were a bit overwhelmed by the tanks and machine gun fire at first.
