XL bully shot

Local XL bully shot today. The owner is saying on social media that the dog was harmless but I've seen it go for a a small child before. Why are these dogs 'harmless" until they injure or kill

Fantastic come back there 👏🏻

I’ll explain it for the slow ones at the back. What you have said is meaningless and does not add anything to the pints already made .

You’re welcome

How many XL owners have third party liability insurance, or carry a gag/break stick?

I've met tiny terriers that have scared me more than most of the XL bullies I've met.

It's not the breed it's the owners. XLBs are popular with roadmen for defensive purposes.

Not an XL, but the best dogs I've ever met were staffies.

yes because a tiny terrier can kill you with one bite
not.

xl bullys kill. terriers can be got off with one swift kick

Honestly the level of aggression in this thread is hilarious.

Anyone would think some of you lot were bred to be aggressive attack dogs.

Maybe some people have the misfortune to live in neighbourhoods where people around them have these animals, or their children have to walk to school past houses where these beasts are in the garden?

People who act as apologists for these animals are just unhinged.

So many people coming for the dog but what about the OWNER?! Dogs aren't born bad, they are raised that way

That's not necessarily true with XLs. They turn. They don't know they're being bad anyway, when they do it. They are joyously following instincts.

Disagree.

Mutant beasts like these "XL bullies" are born genetically pre-disposed to being aggressive. However you "raise them.

Stop it, mutant beasts 😂 they are a dog, yes bred for a specific purpose but is a jack Russel also a mini mutant beast who shakes rats? 😂

There is a foster carer near me who is responsible for two children. He has got a xl bully. He isn't supposed to have it but hides it when authorities are visiting. Wwyd?

I would report him to every authority I could think of & repeatedly until they did something

There was one in the vets last week and I was quite horrified by the size of it. I'm not sure how large they have to be to be classified as xl bullies and I've seen some that I thought might be, but this one was much much larger than any others I've seen. It was wearing a muzzle but it clearly weighed more than its owner and there was a small child with it too.

Hope it was in to be euthanised and didn’t come out again!

Flopsy145 · 07/12/2024 21:08

I'm sure if a professional and experienced (in the breed) owned an XL and had it in the right environment with the right training it would be a safe dog. The owner is at fault, or whoever sold a dog to someone who would allow it to turn out this way. Every decade a new dog is demonised, German shepherds, rotties, staffies, dobermans have all had their moment where they get blamed. Owners create dangerous dogs.

And?

What is this argument? It is without any merit whatsoever, only a moron would have a dog bred to kill. Both are problematic. The end

Every time I think I've read peak stupid on MN someone comes along and surprises me.

XL bullies need to be eradicated from the earth.

What do you think will happen then?

The irresponsible dog owners/roadmen/shitbags who need protection dogs will choose another large breed.

We will all be saying that breed is evil, because only those attacks will get reported.

QuestionableMouse · 07/12/2024 21:06

ScorpioRising83 · 07/12/2024 20:21

Not kill, but injure. Could do more harm to a kid. Showing much aggression. I've met more terriers I believed would attack than bullys. Probably because nobody bothers to train small dogs.

Not to say I've not met some bullys who I was scared would attack, they belonged to roadmen who eventually got nicked and the dogs removed. They all knew each other and one bred his bully. They trained them to attack in their defence and to hunt wildlife.

I don't think it's possible to breed a dog to be aggressive, just as you don't breed a dog to herd sheep or sniff out cocaine or lead blind people. You can breed them to be trainable for these things, but the way they're handled is more important.

What a load of rubbish.

I know a border collie who has never been trained to herd sheep but will round up groups of anything. My terrier is a brilliant ratter, which is something I've never trained! You only have to look at any working breed to see the instincts are there naturally.

And unfortunately these dogs have been bred to be big and to attack once they're triggered.

Flopsy145 · 07/12/2024 21:03

So many people coming for the dog but what about the OWNER?! Dogs aren't born bad, they are raised that way. There will be certain traits in dogs that lend them to specific jobs and make them unsuitable for certain homes (a working collie stuck in a flat that doesn't get walked etc). But that dog biting someone is down to the owner not training them and instilling bad behaviour. Should we also shoot the owner before he buys another dog, doesn't train it and let's it turn dangerous?

But the damage a chihuahua bite would do is nothing compared to the damage an XL bully would do. Plus you can get a chihuahua off someone far easier than you can an XL bully. Surely you can see that the breed does come in to it.

I adore dogs. Don't understand why anyone would ever have a fighting breed, unless they want to fight them. If they do, they should be in prison, and the poor dogs should be humanely put down.

OhshitSharon · 07/12/2024 21:05

I have a staffie, love bull breeds in general and think breed specific legislation is an absolute waste of time but in the case of XL's I do believe they should all be euthanised, something has gone horribly wrong with this breed. It's hard to know how much of what I've read is true about the bloodlines and inbreeding some people believe is responsible for their instability but it would certainly seem there is something genetically wrong with them and I can't bring myself to argue in their defence the way I would for other bull breeds, or to feel too sorry when I hear another one has been destroyed even though that pains me to say as a dog lover.

livanlaterlaterlater · 07/12/2024 21:05

I absolutely love dogs but am glad to read this!

LigamentBandy · 07/12/2024 21:04

BrotherViolence · 07/12/2024 20:07

A terrier couldn't kill you if it tried. People just shouldn't be allowed to keep pets that can easily kill a grown adult, everything else is immaterial.

You do know someone's going to furiously Google that to "prove" it happened or tell you about "their neighbours cousin, well his aunty, her friend Stacey, well her uncle got bit by a Jack Russell in 1996 " or some such nonsense
I agree with you, someone might not like a terrier but, it is not going to clamp it's massive strong jaw around your head & shake .

I don't know because I'm not there, but you seem quite sure they never get loose.

You're just guessing though, right, because they'd be uproar.

Pearl clutching over dog breeds is a very British thing, it's as if no other breeds ever attack people. I was attacked as a child by a large breed that wasn't famous for attacking people and not banned or being debates being banned. I had to have major surgery as a tiny kid.

It wasn't in any newspaper.

You are not dead
