Will we get sick?

Baked a cake. Eggs had been in the fridge previous. Since found out that the eggs I used had actually been sat out on the kitchen side from 11am-6pm when I used them for the cake. Will we get sick??!

It's not really normal to keep them in a fridge in the UK. I've never met anyone that has done that because there's no need to, and eggs are better cooked from room temp.

Ours are kept in an egg basket on the side or if no one can be arsed to put them in there, left in the box in the cuoboard or on that side.

I've never met anyone who doesn't keep their eggs in the fridge!
Just seems easier to me. They keep longer. Just let them get to room temperature before baking.

SmudgeButt · 07/12/2024 22:44

There are eggs holders for the fridge because the same fridges are sold in the US. The eggs are processed differently there and it's safer for them to put them in the fridge than to leave them on the counter. Your eggs, assuming you are in the UK, would be fine.

fyi - even in the US there are recipes that state "leave the eggs out of the fridge to get to room temperature" so you'll def be ok.

I keep them in the fridge

Ok.... and your point is?

Mwnci123 · 07/12/2024 22:37

We never refrigerate eggs and have never been sick.

I keep mine in the fridge (you know, in the egg holder that comes with all Uk fridges - what on earth do you all put in yours?!)

Dont keep the packet so never consult use by dates.
Never in my life had a rotten egg.
Never had any problems baking or cooking with cold eggs.
Never had food poisoning.

where do you all put your eggs? On the side or in a cupboard? And what do you do with the egg holder shelf insert thing in the fridge?

My eggs go in the cupboard. Don't need them in the fridge

BlondeFool · 07/12/2024 22:34

Wolfpa · 07/12/2024 22:34

You don’t need to keep eggs in the fridge in the UK just look at the supermarket who don’t store eggs in the fridge and they could have already been on the shelves for days before you bought them.

the only reasons our fridges come with egg holders is because the same fridges are sold in the US and due to different food standards eggs do need to be stored in the fridge in the US

WeeWigglet · 07/12/2024 22:32

@RaspberryRipple2
I've got one of these.
DH loves his wire chicken.

Also, the reason eggs are nearly 100% safe in the UK is nothing to do with washing. It’s because all UK hens are inoculated against salmonella now.

Eggs do not need to be refrigerated. The clue for this is that they aren't stored in the fridge at a supermarket.

OP I bet a million pounds you are fine.

Yep, this. How long do you think they have been on the shelf in the supermarket. I never store my eggs in the fridge.

WeeWigglet · 07/12/2024 22:30

Salmonella is killed by heat.
It won't survive 150*c for 20 minutes.

They stay in their cardboard packaging in the cupboard. Just because a fridge has an egg compartment doesn’t compel you to use it 🤦‍♀️

I’m in the UK. British lion eggs actually say on their website thing egg info to store in the fridge as it keeps them at a constant temperature and keeps them fresher for longer. I read somewhere that eggs should be discarded if left out for longer than 2 hours after refrigeration so I panicked! It said about salmonella.

A Very, very cursory google would bring up the facts.

How do you live your life with such poor research and critical thinking skills?

I keep lemons in the egg holder in the fridge.

Very passionate about my egg location 🤣 just surprised at such extreme responses to refrigerated eggs eg certain death or baking Armageddon. In reality there’s no difference and I expect it’s totally normal to keep in the fridge.

Does it matter?? You seem very passionate 😂

Personally, eggs in fridge in egg box at home. Pointless little egg holder tray thing gets ignored/chucked in a drawer/bin. At work, the eggs are just in their trays on the shelves under the counter. Literally doesn’t matter. Room temp as they bake better.

It's tough when you read conflicting info. Were the eggs British lion stamped?

JustWalkingTheDogs · 07/12/2024 22:06

Temp change? What do you think happens when you cook them?

In all seriousness, eggs should be kept at room temp.

Pipconkermash · 07/12/2024 22:04

Pink977 · 07/12/2024 19:41

I’m worried about the temperature change from them being in the fridge to then being at room temp and used

🤦🏻‍♀️

My DD has severe emetophobia and worries about eating everything. I'm not saying you do OP, but I do understand what it's like to worry about getting ill from your food.

You'll be absolutely fine. I take my eggs out of the fridge before I bake with them.

I hope you enjoy the cake ☺️
