Man 42 dead from another dog attack

They don't seem to be saying yet what breed of dog it was, only that it was a 'fighting dog'

What's worse is that the owner was charged with it being dangerously out of control back in November too.

That poor man and his family.

So an officer uses his own subjectivity to determine if a dog meets some arbitrary list of characteristics for a dog breed that doesn’t exist? That’s incredibly illogical, given that the reason for banning “pitbulls” in the first place is that they’re supposedly “bred for” fighting and it’s still “in their blood.” A dog could have just enough characteristics to look like a “pitbull” but not actually be related to any of the original fighting breeds, and be taken from its owner or have unnecessary restrictions imposed on it/the owner.

Yes, that's exactly how it works. Just measurements and looks.

“Pitbull” is not an actual breed of dog, so I don’t see how you can ban it. There are lots of other dogs bred for fighting off predators, serving military and police purposes, or protecting their owners, and nobody’s calling for the banning of those breeds for potential aggression.

Also like.. how does breed banning even work? Like if my dog is mixed with Labrador retriever and distantly descended from a Staffordshire terrier, and someone calls the police because I own “pitbull,” what are they going to do if I say he’s a lab? DNA test him?

Nor are XL Bullies, they are a ‘type’. Anything crossed with these or deemed to be of this type is covered under the DDA.

Whether a dog is deemed to be of this type comes down to a listed set of features and specific measurements. They would look at its features and measure various aspects of it such as height, muzzle length to head length ratio, leg length etc. not carry out DNA tests. If the dog did not have a high percentage of matching measurements or features it would not be classed of type and if it did it would. The list of specifications to be classed as an xl are pretty broad.

What I don’t understand is, if this dog had already been subject to being dangerously out of control and identified as a banned breed, regardless of whether it could be proven exempt or not, is why it wasn’t seized back in November. Will the dealing officers be subject to disciplinary action for failing to seize the dog prior to this happening!?

To determine if a dog is typed as a pitbull or XL the dog officer (forgotten the proper terminology) looks for certain criteria - the squareness of the head, the height, whether it has a petrol pump tail etc.

If you have a dog where the mum is a labrador and the dad is a staffy or ddb, it doesn't matter if you can prove the breeds or the dna, it's purely about looks.

This post appeared on a local social media page.

Dog attacks won't stop when there are people put there who pick up unfamiliar dogs and quite happily take them into their home with their own dog and their child.

My jaw dropped when I read this today.

Why did your jaw drop?
She found a dog and now it's with the warden. She thinks it's a nice dog and hopes it won't be typed.

What's wrong with that?

@Jewell25 he could have been breaking in.
It doesn't state the relationship between the man and the woman.
I'm not condoning the dogs behaviour but if was it a guard dog.

On another note why are dogs not registered. When we got our first dog
and had to pay for a licence.

Because bad owners with aggressive dogs aren't the type of people who would register their dog or follow the rules. They are also not the type of people who would properly socialise their animal as a puppy so that it isn't aggressive to people or other animals. They are also the type of people who don't walk their dogs and keep them in the garden or a room in their house/flat so they are under stimulated and probably going slowly mad because of it. Any dog could get aggressive under these circumstances, but those who shouldn't have dogs normally choose something that is intimidating to hype up their fragile ego.

This is never going to end because the gov won't give local authorities and the police sufficient funding to properly deal with it.

What should happen is that anything that resembles a pitbull/xl bully/cane corso, basically any fighting breeds should be seized on sight and destroyed. Full stop. No fucking about. If it clearly is a bull breed or cross, seize it and destroy it.

Pitbulls had a ban but it hasn't been enforced so xl bullies derived from them. XL bullies have been bred en masse for years with zero control. It's no wonder they became a massive problem. If it wasn't tragic, it would be hilarious!

All those deaths and maulings could have been avoided if the DDA had been upheld instead of letting Pitbulls aka XL bullies take over the country.

People were reportedly 'covered in blood' after two adults and a baby were mauled in a horror dog attack in Tameside on Thursday evening (May 29).
Armed police, and paramedics, along with an air ambulance, attended the incident on Baslow Road in the Haughton Green area of Denton shortly before 6pm.
The three victims were rushed to hospital from the scene to be treated for their injuries. Their condition remains unknown.
Witnesses have now spoken out about the moment armed officers swooped on their residential street following the incident, thought to have broken out in a nearby home.
Animal units were also called out to the incident in Denton
One person told the Mirror: "There's people covered in blood and a baby's been taken to hospital. There were others who looked injured.
"A dog section and armed police went in with guns." As another said: "The dog is a boxer. He attacked the one-and-a-half year old and then the owner."
A third, who lives beside the cordon, added: "It happened in the flats. There were lots of police and ambulances and an air ambulance. CID are also here."
Families gathered outside watching as emergency services worked within the cordon. A number of young children were gathered around on bikes and scooters with their parents nearby.
“It was shocking," another resident told the M.E.N. "I didn’t know what had gone on, and then when we found did find out what had happened, it was sad.”
An air ambulance was scrambled to the scene
Footage also showed the moment a dog was led away by police and put into the back of a vehicle. The GMP dog unit vehicles later left the scene, with cordons remaining in place along Baslow Road.
A spokesperson for GMP said: "We were called to Baslow Road, Denton, at around 5:50pm today (May 29) to reports several people had been attacked by a dog.
"Three people, a one-year-old child and two adults, are in hospital being treated for their injuries."

You'll get people on here saying ' it's not the dog, it's the owner'. I would be willing to bet everything I own this won't be a golden retriever 😂

Facts!

Yup. Provided it extends to parents of kids who commit crimesvof violence 👍🏻

Nobody owns children
You can't muzzle them or keep them on a lead in public or keep them in a secure garden at all times, as much as it might be a good idea in some cases

Theroadt · 30/05/2025 07:18

Hoppinggreen · 06/12/2024 10:24

OOHHH, Good idea.
If you own something dangerous you should be responsible for it. I think maybe its Culpable Homicide in The US, assuming thats real and not just on TV

Yup. Provided it extends to parents of kids who commit crimesvof violence 👍🏻

SerendipityJane · 10/12/2024 10:23

There's an argument for that, although I think the dog would also deserve a self-defence justification.

Dogs aren't people. The criminal law doesn't apply to them. Unless we've been transported back to medieval Europe ....

Barnaclegoose · 09/12/2024 20:16

Bewareofthisonetoo · 09/12/2024 17:56

This is bonkers!
Agree that the owner should face consequences for the dog’s actions.
If the dog bites - is assault, if it kills - is homicide.
And the dog destroyed on the first offence.

There's an argument for that, although I think the dog would also deserve a self-defence justification. Which means if someone is daft enough to approach an unknown or clearly unhappy dog, or to tease a dog, and they get bitten, that would be their own fault. Or, in the case of small child, the fault of the adult supervising the child.

But it still feels lopsided. People are happy to put down an animal for acting like an animal on it's first offense, then they should also ensure animals are not left in situations where they are likely to act that way. Which might mean the preventative measures, dog licencing, etc. Prevention is always better than cure.

SerendipityJane · 09/12/2024 17:46

So poor people can't have dogs ?

I can't see that going down well ....

‘Poor’ people can not afford to house, feed, insure and pay for vets bills, pay for dog sitters/walkers when they are at work etc etc. dogs are expensive.

ColourBlueColourPurple · 09/12/2024 18:42

Not RTFT so not sure if it's already been mentioned but a woman in Aberdeen was also attacked by an unspecified breed of dog a couple of days ago and died.

I completely agree with this. So many people just can't be arsed to put in the time to train their dogs. Also, why would anyone actually choose to have an XL bully??

Because they are a bellend who wants it as a weapon/show of power.

No it isn’t a local cute dog turned bad. The BBC is reporting that ‘She is also accused of having custody of a fighting dog that is banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.’

The death of the child of someone prominent or famous.

Until then, this will continue. The right kind of child hasn't been mauled to death yet.

Sorry to make this a class issue but I truly believe that it plays a very big part in why fuck all has been done aside from some tokenistic useless ban

absolutely. Poor children don’t matter.
