To plan on getting quite drunk at my work Christmas party?

I’m started working as a nurse about 4 months ago. Next week is my teams work night out. Our ward is split into 4 teams and mines is definitely filled with the youngest people. Our band 6 really likes a drink and is quite a crazy lady I think and people really like her for it.
This is my first big girl job so I’ve never had a professional staff Christmas party before. Do people actually get super drunk or will I be embarrassing myself just by getting drunk?

Definitely get hammered. You only live once after all and we all deserve some fun.

It's a bonding experience too. You can nurse your hangovers together.

But is it really that fun?! I don’t get the appeal! To me it is even stranger to actually ‘plan’ to feel like that. 👀Each to their own I suppose.

Have a couple of Jägerbombs for me, OP. (As well as everything else, not instead of).

Qualified nurse? You need to be setting an example. Just because the Band 6 likes a drink and is 'crazy' does not mean she is necessarily popular (despite appearances) and is definitely an unprofessional way to act.
I would not be getting drunk in front of colleagues, particularly after 4 months. Trust me, I learnt the hard way!

Yeah. I've learnt the hard way too!

You shouldn''t need to be legless to have a good time. Keep it under control and have a laugh, but stop before you're not in control.

Yeh but just people who all get along from my team going to a bar

You will embarrass yourself. No matter how many people you get along with at work, you don't get to choose your colleagues and there is bound to be someone at the party who will be made to feel uncomfortable by you and anyone else who plans to get drunk.

Also, planning to get drunk before you've even left the house suggests you have a drinking problem. Go out planning to have a good night, not to drink yourself to oblivion.

"I def will be getting drunk … must avoid ever ending up bitter like someone the people on here! I have a brain in my head tho, won’t get too drunk. I can handle my drink."

It's not bitterness to want to protect your career, you'd be a thick twat to not want to. And I was told by a Senior Nurse a few years ago that if you're on a work night out you're still bound by the rules of behaviour administered in the workplace. So just think about that before you try to match the Band 6.

Hospitals can be very conservative and gossipy.

Get drunk with friends or work friends away from work.

But that’s what I’m doing?

It was just meant to be a silly fun post I thought people might share silly stories etc but obviously not 😅

Leave nursing if you are not lying about your qualifications.

Nursing is damned hard specially if you are newly qualified. You should be focussing what area you want to specialise with and the hospital you want to work for,

Getting drunk is not what you should be focussing on to end up like us bitter bitches.😂

FuckILookLike · 05/12/2024 13:40

I have a drink but never get drunk. A step too far in front of colleagues I fear

Mosaic123 · 05/12/2024 13:40

How will you get home if you are very drunk?

What if you say something stupid?

How about a drink or two at the beginning and being the sensible one after that.

Be an adult.

sadly @Anon00 it is rarely forgotten who was an arse at their Christmas party. Who cares though eh?

Have fun!

Well I have seen many as have others on this thread ,I'm not suggesting every nurse gets blind drunk but where I worked nghts out particularly Xmas nights out were legendary.

Yes that’s why I said it is not a blanket rule. I didn’t say it never happens

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 05/12/2024 13:35

Don't do it, OP! Apart from being bad for your health, binge drinking can lead to all kinds of disasters. You might end up in your own hospital's A and E which would be seriously embarrassing especially as you are so new in your role.

teaandbiscuitplease · 05/12/2024 13:33

Don’t drink and slip away relatively early. Nothing good ever comes of drinking at a work Christmas party.

I used to work with a person who was brilliant fun at nights out, always got really drunk and brought the party. But he also brought the gossip and taught me not to trust him with anything as he'd share it if he got drunk even if he wouldn't have sober. I actually ended up changing jobs to avoid having him as my manager because I had some difficult personal business going on at the time and I couldn't have asked for his support with it.

Be fun, enjoy the party and be relaxed and friendly. But do not get plastered.

Get hammered at social events if you want, not work events!! You have to see these people every day

belle40 · 05/12/2024 13:25

Gaz98 · 05/12/2024 13:21

Oh wow did they not know before that he was seeing both of them ?

Apparently not.

It was a very large acute hospital as part of a large hospital Trust. Dr rotated to different site in the Trust so managed to keep each girlfriend hidden from the other.

Boomer55 · 05/12/2024 13:24

I used to avoid these do’s - they can be lethal! If you go, do not get drunk, do not even get slightly inebriated.

Many regrets and much embarrassment can be caused by office parties. 😳

Alondra · 05/12/2024 13:23

x2boys · 05/12/2024 13:10

Have you not read the thread ?
Several nurses have commented about work nights being wild in the NHS as an ex nurse I can confirm this was my experience.

I have read the thread. I'm also a registered nurse with more than 40 years experience.

Nurses, like doctors, used to have serious drinking parties but I assure you, those days are long gone, at least in Australia. They can go to private parties and drink themselves until they pass out but not on public hospitals or surgeries depending on public funds.

I also assure all the young new qualified nurses I know, won't make the post the OP has made.

HappydaysArehere · 05/12/2024 13:23

For goodness sake take note of the above advice. Getting drunk when you are out and about is a no no. Always be in control when not with close family. No one looks good when drunk and especially when not used to it.

Gaz98 · 05/12/2024 13:21

belle40 · 05/12/2024 13:20

A few drinks fine. Blind drink, not.

My worst Xmas do was when two v drunk nursing colleagues got into a (physical) fight as they had both been dating the same Dr.

Police were called. It was all a complete mess (professionally and personally).

Hospitals are horribly gossipy. I wouldn't expose myself to this.
