To and from our normal places of work, yes. Not three flipping hours, to a different location and back, on some whim of management who a) will be getting all their expenses paid and b) will probably be put up in some cushy hotel the night before, not have to set off at 6 a.m. or earlier the same day for this pointless hoop-jumping exercise.

Given some of your comments on this thread, you sound like your employers could be taking you for a complete mug and you'd still be bowing and scraping to them and being 'grateful' to have a job. Actually, come to think of it, you sound like my former employers. So glad my current ones actually treat me like a human being.

I am in my late 30s and have had various jobs since age 17. Not one has asked me to travel 3 hours each way and then said I can’t claim travel expenses.

The fact some people are defending this is crazy.

I've made it clear I'm not outraged the employer isn't covering the cost for her, what exactly makes you think I think anyone else should help?

These aren't commuting costs though. They're asking her to travel to a completely different part of the country, which involves 6 hours' travel time and over 300 miles of driving, none of which they are intending to compensate her for.

Your point would only be valid if the OP was complaining about being asked to go to her actual work place, or somewhere a comparable distance away.

I think I said it's up to us each to pay our own commuting costs. So probably not, but definitely worth making a ridiculous assertion like that.

Her job is a 15 minute drive away, not a 3 hour drive away.

If your employer wanted you to attend a meeting in New York, would you expect to pay for your own hotel and air fare?

Think it's a nice gesture from the Boss to lay this on for the staff. Its just one day. I understand the not getting paid bit but not the progression within the company. People seem to have too much time off at Christmas it is just one day. If it was the 24th think I would be a bit unhappy but it is the day before. Remember when all you has was Christmas day and Boxing Day the bank holidays 2 days.

Many people have to work all day on Xmas Eve. My DS is a class 1 lorry driver. How would you like delivery drivers not to work on Xmas Eve? YABVU.

You're saying the same thing too....Rtft!!!! Lots of us actually have and have shown no signs of not doing (knowing what OP has said more accurately than those bemoaning the people who won't give up hours to rtfl), and are sick of being told we must. We still think being asked to travel once (obviously outside core working hours) isn't the end of the world.

I would decline to attend. Tell them I can't get there, certainly won't pay for the privilege of getting there, and you'll take it as a personal day.

Sounds like a company you don't want to stick with long term if that's how they treat their employees, anyway.

In many places the Friday before Christmas when businesses close was always known as Black Friday. Before it became a sales term for retail.
OP that's super annoying but if it's a normal working day I guess there isn't much you can do. I personally if I could afford to would take the holiday.

You don't think it's unreasonable for the OP to have to be at a venue 3 hours away at 9 am, that involves a six hour round trip and 370 miles at her own expense, the day before Christmas Eve? You'd do that happily would you? Don't be ridiculous.
