To think this attack on London Jewish schoolchildren should have been headline news

I have been waiting for this story to go mainstream, and I’m shocked that it hasn’t.

So far, it seems only the Daily Mail has reported on it - https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14142235/amp/Jewish-children-terrified-thugs-London-bus-rocks-Israel.html.

When are we going to start taking the threats against Jews in the UK seriously and actually do something about it?

Thugs throw rocks at bus with Jewish children and yell 'f*** Israel'

Students at JFS in Kenton, north London, were travelling on buses operated by Uno, when the vehicles were set upon by a group of teenage thugs at a bus stop in Edgware, on Wednesday.

‘happening to children who have nothing whatsoever to do with the situation in the Middle East.’

none of the children have anything to do with with anything going on in the ME, not 10 of thousands of dead Palestinian children either.
The sooner Israel brokers actual peace the better for everyone.

Whats that got to do with what we're discussing?

It's a truly hideous incident and a disgusting thing to have happened.

Just as an add-on to the all the (very correct comments) that point out that British Jewish children have no responsibility for the horrors that Palestinian civilians are subjected to...I would extend that out and say that generally, many actual Israeli civilians are not to blame or responsible either. One thing that studying history did for me was show that there is a BIG distinction between the government/military and its civilians, which is why one of the reasons why deliberate attacks on civilians are war crimes under international law. There's an understanding that civilians have an innocence, or level of innocent, in the the whole situation, that the leadership doesn't.

It's totally acceptable to hate the Israeli government, but not acceptable to collectively hate Israeli civilians in general, and unfortunately I think that sometimes gets lost on some people.

The level of antisemitism on MN is alarming! This is clearly a racist attack and yet people are trying to minimise it or justify it. Yet more evidence that "antizionism" is just a dog whistle for the antisemites.

Its hard to avoid that conclusion.

TeachesOfPeaches · 04/12/2024 10:59

I'm from the area and the Jewish schools are hidden and don't have signage. They have security, as do the synagogues and that was over 30 years ago

This was an incident carried out by children from a different school. It needs to be dealt with directly by the school and a the police, within the school.
I suspect that as it is an incident perpetrated by children it won't be in the news due to their age and right to anonymity. Reporting it may cause a witchhunt and detract from any reparation work that needs to be done with the children who carried out the attack.

The incident last week of Jewish girls leaving school who were attacked with glass bottles by an adult, one of whom was stabbed in the face with broken glass, was also barely reported on

My DS told me several years ago he had seen police outside Jewish schools at pick up time because of previous incidents and attacks. I haven’t seen that reported either

shittestusernameever · 04/12/2024 10:39

It's disgusting, Jewish schools now have security guards which is horrific! These kids should not be terrified to go to school

hazelnutvanillalatte · 04/12/2024 10:38

I have family that teach at and attend this school. The school's guidelines have been to hide the uniform outside school because there have been literally COUNTLESS incidents of children being threatened and even spat on by adults. Is it reported on, no, and if it is the response is 'it's their own fault.'

The community is terrified and unfortunately because we are a small minority the feeling is we cannot do anything about it except hide or leave. Which is exactly the motivation to keep attacking us. In Hendon leaflets were put up saying Zionists leave Britain, written in Hebrew.

caramac04 · 04/12/2024 10:37

Just to clarify my earlier post. When I said Jewish people are not the threat I meant that the far right are.
Anybody bullied, harassed, threatened or physically harmed because of their religion deserve our protection

Racist attacks happen to school kids every day where I live. It's news but not headline news.

Where on earth do you live? Every day? Every single day, children in your area are being racially attacked? By who? What's being done about it? It sounds horrific

littleducks · 04/12/2024 10:33

I haven't said that it definitely is or isn't.... I've said I'd be interested to see conclusion of police investigation.

There was a huge furore with lots of people saying police were anti-Semitic after videos circulated of police officers (in Edgware so same area to this incident) took down posters with pictures of Hamas hostages. This was also reported in news at that time.

It actually turned out later that the posters removed were only a pharmacy which was private property and were put up in "retaliation" to a social media post (which the pharmacy have claimed was not made by them but some kind of hacking I don't know the truth of that as never seen any reporting of an investigation onto that aspect). The pharmacy staff were being harassed and threatened with death threats made to them. So the police were visiting the pharmacy because of the threats and wider issue not randomly removing posters like was originally reported.

So after situations like that I don't think remaining open minded while a situation is investigated and when all the information is public starting appropriate conclusions is a bad tactic. It didn't mean I'm justifying anything by anyone.

JingleB · 04/12/2024 10:11

Because it’s school kids. 11 year olds going to school by bus. If you can’t see it’s particularly awful to terrorise children, I don’t know what to say to you.

Yes there are only about 300k Jewish people in the uk. We should also bear in mind when we see these stats that there are many Jewish people, like myself, who are not visibly Jewish...sorry I actually hate that term but couldn't think of a better way to express it. But just making the point that when I and many others walk down the road, people won't actually know they are....I dread to think what the stats would be otherwise.

That is a very good point. Because the majority of us are white and wear regular clothes, we hide in plain sight.

That's odd. I only have the article to go on but the police refer to it as a school bus and the DM say it is operated by a company called Uno. But if you have local knowledge on it then, I'll take your word for it.

It's clearly an antisemitic attack though, bus ownership not withstanding.

I don't know the bus operator, Uno, it used to be Sullivan buses when my DC were at JFS, that ran the route on behalf of TFL. If you read to the bottom of the article, tfl gives a statement, so I assumed it was the same type of arrangement. But this is nit picking really, I just wanted to express that whatever bus it was, it wasn't a private coach, which some schools use. I think JFS used to have one to Bushey, I don't know if it does anymore, and parents paid for it. We didn't pay for Sullivan, the kids used their teen oyster cards.

None of those things are contradictory.

Schools frequently use private companies to run their school transportation, and the local authority covers the cost.

A bus is a “school bus” when it only takes pupils and no other passengers, even if an hour later it is in general use.

To put religious hate crimes in perspective, a third of religious hate crime is against Jewish people, despite them being on 0.5% of the population. Religious hate crime against Jews in the UK has doubled since the Oct 7th terrorist attack by Hamas.

This is awful. Poor children they must have been very scared

The bus driver should have reported it

Those whose dc attend that school must be feeling terrible, they'll want their dc to be safe

Winesoup · 04/12/2024 10:13

I think I can pretty much guarantee that they are anti-Semites - random thugs might throw stones at a bus, but they don't rush onto it shouting 'Fuck Israel', they don't tend to have much of an interest in world politics. I doubt that they've developed an interest in the Middle East from reading the Guardian but have conflated anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism.

This isn't about rivalry between different schools, this is about kids who have been exposed to anti-Semitic ideas in the home or community and are acting on them.

Absolutely this.
Its really appalling that people on this thread are trying to deny the racist anti-Semitism in this attack. The attackers sure weren't denying it.

These posters really need to look into themselves to reflect on why they are so keen to convince themselves this was not an anti-Semitic attack, given the attackers were so explicit to their victims that this was an ant- Semitic attack.

It is a public bus though, a school route, but a public bus funded by TFL

Oldglasses · 04/12/2024 10:15

@littleducks - you're very naive if you think this is rivalry between schools. And even if it was, what is your justification for the racist language?

littleducks · 04/12/2024 10:14

No..... And I don't think that's a sensible conclusion to draw from what I wrote. My point was I would be interested to find out if after the police investigation it is as described in the article or part of a bigger issue.

I've been at Edgware bus station/high street and seen multiple fights between teen groups over the years. I don't think these even make the local newspaper (even if say a glass bus window is smashed). Even stabbings don't make national news.

The JFS school statement itself makes reference to having previously co-operated with local schools around school rivalry incidents (which I have said this may or may not be).
