Teacher treating children too young

My child is in a year 3 class, the teacher now sings a song to get them to sit on the carpet and has organised a book advent for this week. The children are 7 and 8, I feel they are far too old to be sung to sit on the carpet. Aibu to talk to the headteacher?

I taught year 3-6 for years and LOVED a tidy up/carpet song adjusted for the age of kids. Sometimes sung, sometimes played. Sometimes we did a little dance too.

That's so lovely 😍

Would you be happy for the teacher to speak to your boss about something you were doing at work that she wasn’t happy about?
For goodness sake leave the poor teacher alone!

I can’t really see your perspective at all. It sounds lovely. As an adult I’d like someone to sing to me 😂

Wouldn't that be lovely! Imagine if sales assistants sang to you at the counter!

Dearover · 01/12/2024 22:16

I think one post referred to "her class". Quick, report to MNHQ

Jfc, teachers really can do nothing right can they!?

I know, good grief, pick pick pick

mitogoshigg · 01/12/2024 22:14

Seems a bit odd so old i admit but if it works what harm does it do? Pick your battles! I had one child who hated having to sit on the floor, being autistic she found lots of things challenging and was pleased when floor time ended in year 2.

Apolloneuro · 01/12/2024 22:14

I hate to break it to you, @Someonehelpmeagain but sometimes, even grown ups sing. There’s this thing called choirs…

Nothing inherently childish about singing. It’s good for the soul.

Also how could a book advent possibly be a bad thing at any age?!

YellowJoggers · 01/12/2024 22:11

I use a song to get my Years 9-11 to get back to their seats/rearrange classroom after group work etc 😂

Helpimfalling · 01/12/2024 22:10

In a world where kids grow up way too fast and many probably won't be sung to/with.
I love this for them kids!!

You are all very preumptious in assuming that the teacher is female! And I didn't say there was a problem with children sitting on the carpet, moreover how they are asked.

Genuine question: what is a "book advent"?

Bushmillsbabe · 01/12/2024 21:59

Year 3 is a huge jump for them both academically and in level of focus required, especially if they have moved from an infants to a junior school. They may find the activities you have mentioned supportive in that transition from the cosy world of infants into the more formal juniors phase. I would have no issue with the things you mentioned

AllYearsAround · 01/12/2024 21:59

Go straight to the governors OP!
Primary schools are no places for books and songs. How childish.
They'll be forcing the children to play next.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 01/12/2024 21:57

How would you rather a teacher signaled it's time for a new task? A reminder on their smart phones? Pop it in their outlook calendar? A teams invite?

No book advents for your child oh no. They've got a beauty advent calendar and a gins of the world one. None of that book or chocolate rubbish for a child so mature.

🙄

Womblingmerrily · 01/12/2024 21:52

Of course it would be entirely unreasonable for you to speak to either the teacher or headteacher about this.

Do you have a Masters in Education? Why is it that you think you know better than the teacher?

If you want your child educated in your own special way then Home educate. Otherwise let people get on with their jobs and don't interfere unless harm is involved.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 01/12/2024 21:51

What does your child like OP if they're too grown up for a song?

wafflesmgee · 01/12/2024 21:51

Hahaha PLEASE go to the headteacher with this! It will make a fantastic story at the staff Christmas do! 😅

PS You do know that grown ups still read books, right?! How is a book advent calendar "too young"? They may be hinting that you need to read more with your child.

bakewellbride · 01/12/2024 21:51

This is clearly a wind up everyone! Don't indulge the op in attention, good or bad.

Martymcfly24 · 01/12/2024 21:50

Right so teachers now can't use discipline, can't praise other children with star of the week etc and now can't use a song to signal a transition.

Can someone on mumsnet please write the definitive book on classroom management so we can all avoid being the subject of a complaint to the headteacher.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 01/12/2024 21:50

Ffs. Some parents really will complain about the most ridiculous things. There's nothing wrong with songs. My Year 10s love them!

CarrotPencil · 01/12/2024 21:50

Surely people are more concerned about kids growing up too quickly?? DS is year 5 and this is the first year they haven’t sat on the carpet.

Sceptical123 · 01/12/2024 21:49

I’ve never seen 100% before!

You are unreasonable, controlling and have way too much time on your hands. I bet they love you there. Don’t make them have negative feelings towards your child by association with your twattishness OP
