To not understand how it’s only TODAY that I’ve ever watched Love Actually

And it was bloody lovely!

I genuinely don’t know how I’ve never seen this despite being 51. In my defence I’m not much of a film lover by DD had heard about it and decided to put it on.

So many big names in it, it was fab.

My heart actually broke for Emma Thompsons character though, what a shit of a man. Wonder if he did sleep with that woman.

I loved it until I read the Jezebel review.

Has not ages well at all but it does show we have moved on from the noughties...

Emma Thonpson does her best but the middle class mum who apparently (?) forgives Alan Rickman for an affair (?) For the sake of the children is really a poor take on reality. Getting over infidelity becaiuse of what Christmas and 'love actaully'?

the backpacking guy who is inept at talking to English girls but ends up sleeping with four stunning US girls simply because of his accent seems like a scenario from a bad porn film.

Andrew Lincoln stalking Keira Knightley is just weird. She is a married women who is overcome by a guy professing love on her doorstep and apparently ends the approach with a kiss(?). Strange with no backstory.

Martin Freeman and the womb out of Gavin and Stacey doing the one joke throughout the film and it now just seems gratuitous nudity. It seems jarring someone grabbing naked breasts in a film when there really is not a great joke behind it and seems to be done just for shock value really.

Liam Neeson getting over his dead wife by dating Claudia Schiffer?

Hugh Grant pursuing a secretary and a very cliched portrayal of class divide which is somehow meant to be endearing?

Bill Nighy's weird bromance?

Strange portrayal of mental illness.....

It really is dated.

This is put very well but tbh I felt a lot of this when I saw it upon its release...

If yall wanna get upset about a Christmas movie, I watched Holiday in Handcuffs yesterday. Now that was problematic.

THANK YOU! Even Richard Curtis’s daughter has said how monumentally shit it is

To be fair Scarlett Curtis has some fairly extreme views so I wouldn’t give her opinion too much credence.

IcedPurple · 01/12/2024 19:14

I would say you'd done very well to avoid that smug, misogynistic travesty of a film until now!

BIossomtoes · 04/12/2024 22:14

Creepy sexualisation of children

I take it that’s parody. I seem to recall a very innocent kiss on the cheek.

Elsvieta · 04/12/2024 21:37

WingingItSince1973 · 01/12/2024 20:28

Also never seen Love Actually 😜

Creepy sexualisation of children, creepy romanticizing of a stalker, and Martine McCutcheon (who looks to be size 12) is fat, apparently. (Also some nasty abuse of a woman who actually is fat, who has done nothing wrong bar Existing While Fat).

The Emma Thompson / Alan Rickman storyline is good. Laura Linney's bit also real, and sad, and brilliantly played. But it's patchy at best.

HarrietBond · 04/12/2024 01:35

I saw it in the cinema on release and came out ranting at my partner at how dreadful it was. The only ‘truthful’ bits were sad, and the rest was misogynistic codswallop. And it also treats grief very poorly too.

And I’m no film snob. Love Actually is just a bad film.

Me too. I hated it first time I saw it at the cinema. So many of the storylines are really dreadful and not funny

89redballoons · 04/12/2024 07:34

Gosh, I remember seeing it in the cinema and while I was watching it my best friend was watching The Office Christmas special, and she texted me the big spoiler from that (I think the text was TIM KISSED DAWN!).

Can't believe that was 20+ years ago, but neither love actually nor the office have stood up particularly well. Emma Thompson is still magnificent, though.

MangoRose · 04/12/2024 05:55

Love Actually is my favourite, I don't get the hate on here, it's an extremely widely loved film, some bits won't have aged well, it's over 20 years old FFS. It's just a film.

Not so keen on The Holiday, Jack black has to be the worst casting in any film ever in that.

HarrietBond · 04/12/2024 01:35

Jc2001 · 01/12/2024 21:09

Yeah. Everyone loved it at the time. It's only recently they decided they didn't like it.

I only watched 4 weddings for the first time about a week ago. It was ok I suppose - I can see the appeal but I wouldn't watch it again. I fell asleep at the cinema at every single LoTR and Pirates film. Give me a 5 yo Mongolian child wandering around on the Russian steppe with a blind camel - I'll watch that kind of thing for hours.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 03/12/2024 21:14

It’s my favourite film

Ladyzfactor · 03/12/2024 20:48

DrFoxtrot · 02/12/2024 09:21

I like it for the soundtrack and early 2000's nostalgia. It's definitely not up there in my list of favourite Christmas films but I'll watch it if it's on.

I hated this movie but I will say that the soundtrack is a banger. Beside the Maria Carey song of course.

Trimbleton · 02/12/2024 21:25

RafaistheKingofClay · 01/12/2024 23:42

The thing is I know it’s problematic and misogynistic but for 2hrs I just don’t care. Which probably makes me hugely hypocritical but it’s a nice Christmas film and I like it.

Exactly. I love it for that festive watch

lifebyfaith · 02/12/2024 21:19

Absolutely love that film

"Yes I have Ant or Dec"

Still makes me laugh no matter how many times I've seen it.

Me too. Bill Nighy’s tone of voice is just great.

Same 🤣

I've watched it every year since it came out. I love it - and The Holiday.

Never understood the hate it gets.

LilacLilyBird · 02/12/2024 20:03

I will always love it

Needhelp101 · 02/12/2024 19:53

It's an awful film, with a few glimpses. But somehow, I still have to watch it every Christmas.

There's an entire story line about a lesbian couple, one of whom is dying of cancer, that somehow got jettisoned in the final cut for Colin 🙄

I've tried to watch The Holiday four times on various Christmases and have now given up.

Deadringer · 02/12/2024 19:48

IcedPurple · 02/12/2024 08:18

Yes, but that was merely an intro for the main storyline. Which was him shagging the help who didn't even speak his language.

This film has problems aplenty but the Firth storyline is not one of them. At no point does he shag the help. He never lays a hand on her, she kisses him, and they go their seperate ways for christmas. He learns her language, goes to her home town and proposes to her, all the power is in her hands, whether she accepts, where they will live, everything.

Somethingsnappy · 02/12/2024 09:33

Lots of people mention the fat shaming thing, and it surprises me because that wasn't my take on it. The way I saw it was that the woman who said that about MM's character was a bit jealous of her, so said something about her to attempt to be derogatory and dismissive. It was very obvious that she was not really 'chubby' and also looked very beautiful. That was my interpretation of it anyway.

But it wasn't just the office staff that said this, it was her parents too. Her father called her 'plumpie'.

Bananaram · 02/12/2024 12:28

I'm on Team Love It!

"Eight is a lot of legs, David" gets me every time 🐙
