To think that Reform might overtake the Conservatives at the next GE?

I'm not saying they should. I'm saying I think they might.

YABU, but I'm depressingly convinced that a Reform/Tory coalition will sweep the boards at the next election because Labour are convinced the best way to combat that is to be marginally less right wing than them, rather than offering any alternative that might upset the Daily Mail.

Yes a very right wing coalition by whatever name will win the next election. Just as they are will do across Europe.

MushMonster · 28/11/2024 21:21

I do hope both parties disappear before the next elections. I do not think they have anything worthy to contribute. Actually, they are a serious danger to the country if they continue with their past and present lines. I am hoping for the formation of a reasonable right- centre party instead.

I think, regarding illegal immigration, Labour has the right idea. Target the gangs. They have already arrested some people involved. Deportation agreements are needed too. At least, we need to be able to check who this people are and if they have commited any crimes. That is paramount to me.
I would seriously consider putting these guys on intensive English courses, basic life skills in UK (taxes, council tax, NHS, car tax, car logbook, TV licence, laws, job applications, banking... and so on) and giving them a job. Take them to clear river beds of litter, laundry for care homes, sort items for charity shops/ food banks. Things that they could do to help the councils, with their level of English. At least, they would earn their keep and be occupied for 10-12 hours a day, between study and work. Just a normal routine really. Being iddle cannot really help anyone.

Your assessment of the Tories is spot on. The rest is nonsense.

I think even if the Tories had governed more competently from 2019-24 they'd probably have lost the GE anyway. Structural factors.

They'd been in a really long time, and there's no precedent for an incumbent party winning again after 14-15 years in the universal franchise era.

Then also incumbent parties mostly get the boot after periods of inflation like the one we've had. There probably wasn't anything they could've done to avoid losing this time round. But maybe if it hadn't turned into such a fiasco they might've kept the loss more respectable.

We’ve ended up with this absolute shower of shit in charge because the conservatives cannot get their act together. Rishi was determined to be PM one way or another. He plotted and schemed until it happened. They spent the last five years of government stabbing each other in the back.

Hopefully they now have a leader they can all get behind and support but their reelection will need Farage to wind his neck in for the greater good.

Hopefully Keir and Rachel will be too busy in free VIP boxes to actually do any more damage.

So you do want to stop the boats?

Edited

I doubt anyone is in favour of people risking their lives in an inflatable to get here.

The problem is that it's a complex situation which is difficult to resolve.

Reform are populists and will say what they think people want to hear. For example, Farage said that people would be taken back to France. If we could send people back to France, we'd already be doing it.

One of his candidates on the campaign trail was talking about shooting them from Dover. That's also what some people want to hear but again, it's not going to happen.

GretchenWienersHair · 28/11/2024 20:53

Well I certainly don’t want to use the people on them as “target practice”. But it sounds like I’m in the minority here.

So you do want to stop the boats?

batsandeggs · 28/11/2024 20:56

Yes, and we should be concerned about it. Only bothering to care five years when it materialises is exactly the problem.

The Tory party has to stop ousting leaders if it ever wants to be electable.

It's one thing I thought Boris had pulled off 'back me or I'll sack you" led to a degree of unity and their clearest win for some time. Then he squandered it and they went back to the old squabbling. Too early to tell if Badenoch can hold the Tories together.

What I'm wondering is if Reform and the Tories will have a pact not to stand against each other to avoid splitting the vote.

Absolutely. Who's our voting base? People who like the establishment, value stability and tradition. What should we do?...Burn through as many party leaders and cabinet ministers as we can, throwing everything in chaos and behaving like a bunch of Machiavellian shits.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 28/11/2024 20:55

I'd quite like to eat some humble pie.

I think that the NF party will do very well at the next election, because or in spite of the close ties with Trump.

sprigatito · 28/11/2024 20:20

I think she means you're assuming ethnic minorities won't vote for racists who want them deported? I'd have thought that was a safe enough assumption, had I not witnessed all the fishermen and farmers merrily voting for Brexit 🤦‍♀️

What exactly about reform is racist?

What % of these professions voted for brexit?

Halfemptyhalfling · 28/11/2024 20:52

Reform seemed quite well organised this time and had local support. Depends if conservatives stay/move right to lure them back or move to the centre to lure labour/libdems. If kemi is still leader she might get more ethnic minority votes but could lose some racist votes. However Trump won partly as he got ethnic minority male votes despite being white.

FrippEnos · 28/11/2024 20:47

Are posters really so blind that they don't know that there are ethnic minorities that would quite happily reduce immigration?

No because it doesn’t fit the narrative does it.

Eh? What “ethnic minority” in their right mind is voting for the people who want to “stop the boats” and use refugees as target practice?

Ask any immigrant who came here legally, jumping through a myriad of hoops to demonstrate whether they have the capacity to benefit the country if they appreciate people conflating legal migration with people sneaking into the country on small boats without a passport.

That doesn’t translate to overtaking the Tories nationally though, does it? They beat them in 5 seats. Means nothing

I would absolutely loved to be proved wrong. Really I would. But from general consensus and the Tories not being a viable opposition, I am just saying, I really wouldn't be surprised

I’m mixed race (black/white), and I don’t want the boats either. I don’t know anyone minority or not who supports it. What I want is a proper sensible way for genuine asylum seekers to enter.

I also know the peope in boats are a tiny proportion of overall immigration. Most of it’s legal. Large numbers from Ukraine and Hing Kong. Many people seem to forget this. We should have a skills based policy.

No. I think that the Tories will be back stronger than last election as the current government has been a disappointment rather than the change that people were hoping for.

I can’t imagine Nigel doing much politically in 4 years time. He’s all about the money so would happily take some job in tv or something over fighting for his constituents. With Trump backing power next year, he will probably have more money making opportunities.

The current government has been in power 4 months. There’s 4.5 years for what they are doing to work out. And the Tories have not learned anything from their defeat. Still lying at the despatch box and behaving horrifically.
