were...bloody amazing!?

AIBU to think this band might be the most underrated band in the UK...EVER!?

I have just blasted out their greatest hits whilst wrapping presents and had a nostalgic sing-along. So many wonderfully written songs, great singers too. Criminally underrated in my opinion.

Absolutely fab they were! Bring happy teen memories every time I hear them!

Paul Heaton sang with a weird, unnatural accent. They both did, actually. They were really old fashioned even for the time. As pp said, the male/ female dynamic and harmonising particularly. Their songs were often a bit mawkish and dreary. Don’t Marry Her used to make me feel vaguely depressed, even as a kid. Perfect 10 is the most annoying song of all time.

@WinterCrow spot on. I have to turn them off too. I hate them with a passion - I hate the male / female dynamic and their stupid harmonies in an almost pathological way. Urghhh.

I can’t stand them. Twee lyrics, always sung smugly and in too high a pitch, with music that sounds like it was written by AI.

If they come on the radio I have to turn it off.

Deacon Blue on the other hand … fabulous.

Twee lyrics? Are you getting confused with another band?

StrawberryWater · 28/11/2024 14:14

Yep, love them!

Heaton is an incredible songwriter. Had some great tunes with the Housemartins too. It's a real shame that Jacqui Abbott's health has stopped her from touring with him in recent years.

Paul Heatons new album is a joy as well, I'm listening to it a lot right now. Possibly the best song writer this country has ever produced (before anyone comes at me - no I don't rate Lennon & McCartney 😉)

ImRonBurgandy · 28/11/2024 14:07

Paul Heaton is a genius

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 28/11/2024 14:07

The best concerts I have been to are Beautiful South / Paul Heaton ones. Absolutely brilliant, a previous poster must've got a really bad day.

the80sweregreat · 28/11/2024 14:06

A little time has a great twist !
I've never seen them live but on a good night I can imagine they are worth seeing

Their joy radiates from them when they are performing too.

Oh, I was thinking of Deacon Blue when I wrote that! No shade to the south

TheFlis · 28/11/2024 14:05

We have watched some of their old live content back recently as I was blown away but how good Paul’s voice is.

ObieJoyful · 28/11/2024 14:05

Great on record- lousy in concert.

The only gig I’ve ever walked out of. He basically told the crowd that they were hungover and couldn’t be arsed. It showed!

Clever lyrics and Paul Heaton too!
Great band

MrTwatchester · 28/11/2024 14:02

Yes, I listen to them all the time, such wonderful songwriting. Girlfriend is my jam.

I love the Beautiful South. They had a bit of a resurgence on TikTok recently my kids are now into the music too.
