Secondary school does not allow D.Martens

Dd in Y7 - unfortunatelly we picked the wrong school, teachers don’t stay long, behaviour is appaling, bullying is not dealt with and I even found a video on YT of a parent beating up one of her child’s colleagues - a disabled girl (apparently club feet) at the school gates.
Dd says that disable girl is a bully but I don’t know the full story.

Anyway, the school uniform rules say black shoes. I let Dd use her black DM boots. The issue took an issue with it because DMs are not school shoes - but a lot of students wear kickers that looks like boots so I really don’t see a problem.
I’ve had notes sent home and a few meetings to discuss the matter. Everytime I tell then that they should be worried and using their time and energy to fix the real problems the school have, and the shoes Dd wears does not impact her learning.

Then in one of the meetings they asked Dd why she loves her DMs so much and why she is so attached to it and she reply along the lines that it is because it makes her feel safe as they are strong and sturdy and she feels that she can kick bullies if needed.

Now, Dd has never been involved in or accused of bullying and she is going from an confident / outgoing girl to fearful and insecure. I did not know this is how she felt about the DMs.

Now the school is using what she said against us, saying that she should not be encouraged to think about violence even if it is for self defence. Dd’s life now is hell as every school staff now comments on her DMs to her daily, all day long saying ‘those are not school shoes and you are breaking the rules’

I’m trying to convince her to buy a pair of kickers just so the harassment stops and she can actually focus on learning.

Yes I already applied for school transfer.

however since older students wear it too I guess the kickers are an examption

Or they may be being ignored at the moment or not picked up on - we get that everyone gets lax about some rule then a crack down occurs.

DD2 shoes I don't think are compliant -well ones she wears on PE days - I've said my piece she says it easier and everyone else does it and they've been fine last year and this with no singling out or anyone in school saying a thing to her or us. If it suddenly becomes an issue she has compliment shoes and she'll be expected by us to wear them. I'd prefer her to just comply but at 15 in Y11 I'm picking my battles with her - in Y7 at 11 she wouldn't have had the option.

PollyPut · 28/11/2024 15:27

@corporategreen The policy says shoes.

She is wearing boots.

No wonder there is a problem. YABU for allowing her to wear boots when it is a direct contradiction of the policy.

Just because others may not be following the policy, doesn't mean you also need to break it

ByGentleFatball · 28/11/2024 15:22

It's clear that all boots are banned so that either applies to kickers, or we can assume that the rule is obsolete.

I'm reporting this thread to MNHQ. It's completely unacceptable to post screenshots of private communications sent in good faith. Buy your child some shoes, OP.

@corporategreen

Threatening violence even in this glib way is never appropriate.

The no boots rule is common, and kickers come as shoes as well as low rise boots

mondaytosunday · 28/11/2024 15:17

Nope school uniform states school shoes and not DMs. You have bigger problems than her shoes - this is not the issue to make a fuss about.

Westfacing · 28/11/2024 15:14

Why not just buy your DD the required shoes and let her get on with her schooling.

The school sounds like it has enough problems to be getting on with, without having do deal with your time-wasting awkwardness.

And now we know which school it is, I expect that will piss the teachers off even more!

the school doesnt sound very nice but the vast majority of secondary school kids have to deal with (unreasonable IMO) school uniform rules. Not a hill to die on.

DM shoes instead for school, keeps her boots for other things 🤷🏻‍♀️

My son had the widest feet. Walked on the outside of his shoes and would destroy them. DM shoes were the answer for him. Hard-wearing and I daresay good for protection

TPJB · 28/11/2024 15:06

No wonder the school is in difficulties when parents don’t make their entitled kids follow the rules.

DoraGray · 28/11/2024 15:04

It doesn't really matter if the school rule is to wear red shoes with pink spots trimmed with ostrich feathers.
That would be the school rule. If you want to send your child there then comply.
If you don't, then find a school that will take DMs.
If you can't find one, keep her at home-wearing whatever she likes-and take some qualifications so that you can educate her up to A level yourself.

You and your daughter-schooled by your attitude-have some brass neck.

I long for the day when a Head Teacher can say-Fit in or Fuck Off.

There are always options.

corporategreen · 28/11/2024 12:12

I think she is completely justified in wanting to wear DM boots. It is not steel toe.
Also the policy say shoes but a lot of the the student wear kickers boots, not shoes. The height on the ankle is the pretty much the same for DMs and kickers

Also I resent that the school is not seeing the big picture - Dd is thinking about self defence and scares of bullies but whatever the school is doing re: bullies is not working. At all. There are fights scheduled around the outside of the school every day.

Behaviour is terrible.

Sure bullying and bad behaviour is also against school rules? Sure it impacts learning more than whatever shoes a student wears?

Sooo…how do you know the kickers in question are not from the shoe range?

Because the OP specified they're the boot ones.

cardibach · 28/11/2024 14:59

ByGentleFatball · 28/11/2024 13:56

I don't call them boots. Kickers do. So they can differentiate them from their shoe range. They're boots.

Sooo…how do you know the kickers in question are not from the shoe range?

WorriedRelative · 28/11/2024 13:47

And good for your feet, especially wide feet. Most "school shoes" are narrow and flimsy.

They are orthopaedic shoes, banning the brand as a whole sounds troubling. Would she be allowed DM shoes without yellow stitching?

I had this discussion with my school in the 90s and my friends and I successfully got to wear our DM boots until we left. I focused on comfort, practicality, health and safety (waterproof, non-slip, and protection from impact, spillages and being trodden on), and not causing waste by buying extra things.

It is stupid that many schools allow ballet flats but not DMs.

It’s DM boots that are banned as far as we can tell, not the brand. The OP refuses to clarify, so I think we can assume that’s the case. The uniform says shoes. DMs make shoes which have all the advantages you describe. I wear them all the time.

And you reckon teachers saying children should follow uniform rules are ‘embarrassing our profession’?
Wild.

I think it should raise even greater red flags with the school that they are so unable to deal with bullying that a student would feel the need to say that.

You know I wasn’t saying there wasn’t something wrong with the school? Raising red flags about a child choosing shoes to do violence is actually part of dealing with poor behaviour.

FrippEnos · 28/11/2024 14:50

DM boots used to have the nickname shin kickers, (don't know if they still do), I am sure you can figure out why.

TheSilkWorm · 28/11/2024 14:49

What a fuss about nothing. Boots are not uniform in any school anywhere and using 'I can kick bullies' as a reason to wear them is obviously going to get the school even less likely to overlook them! Just buy her some shoes for school FFS

Part of the reason behaviour is bad in schools is that parents find reasons why their particular child doesn't have to follow the rules. It's a dreadful message to send to your child. You should tell your DD that they are not allowed and that is that. And you should buy her the correct footwear that complies with the uniform policy.

mamajong · 28/11/2024 14:45

Rules are rules

muggitymugface · 28/11/2024 14:35

Just get some ordinary black shoes for school. Keep the DMs for fun.

Problem solved - or at least this one.

I wish I'd that sort of money to burn when my children were at school. DMs or similar - (£100+?) for an 11 year old. The soles will be barely worn by the time she's grown out of them.

EdgyDreamer · 28/11/2024 14:11

My DC go to a school like this - wasn't like this when eldest started and we moved into catchment but turned into this.

My advice - by some shoes that comply and tell her to wear them.

Other kids may get away with things your's won't but build good will and save your energy for battles that matter- stuff like them not having a teacher for half GCSE course - being able to eat or access a toilet.

Our middle child fell foul of SLT - outright and luckily for us provable lies making life harder for him - his teachers and head of year knew him for years and us - as rule polite rule followers which helped push back on some of the insane accusations and get past restrictions ( many offered to talk to SLT as couldn't believe accusations) . I think if we had reputation as difficult or he had that would have been impossible situation to manage. As it is made it harder to deal with any issue youngest had arise - have to rely on teachers who TBF are usually really good.

edwinbear · 28/11/2024 14:07

Uniform policy is shoes, not boots, so that's what your DD needs to be wearing. It does sound like the school have some behaviour issues and I'm sure they are working hard on fixing that. Part of enabling that to happen, is having parents who will back the school - on uniform policy, behaviour standards and discipline. If the school are constantly negotiating with parents and DC think parents will argue with school every time they think something is 'unfair' they won't get very far with making the necessary changes.
