If men were left to organise Christmas themselves

AIBU to think it would be an absolute disaster?

And what would it look like? WineHalo

They’d just ask us questions all the time until we broke and sorted it.

I have to say dh was good at buying and wrapping presents and froofing the Xmas tree and decorating the table.

FrivolousKitchenRollUse · 27/11/2024 18:03

Some would do it great, some good, some average, some shite. Much like women based on the number of threads this time of year which tell stories from the ghost of Christmas past disasters.

MajorCarolDanvers · 27/11/2024 18:01

my dh does at least half of the organisation already

TallNeckedGiraffe · 27/11/2024 17:58

It would be great.
My husband is a fully functioning adult.

So is mine. He puts all decorations up, is a great shopper, can cook and is generally a grown up

YouWouldntKnowWhatIMean · 27/11/2024 18:00

DH cooked an excellent Christmas dinner last year and buys really thoughtful gifts so great!

GreyCarpet · 27/11/2024 18:00

Thinking about it, when I was married, my exh did most of Christmas then too.

And he did most of the planning organisation for our wedding.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 27/11/2024 18:00

In my house it would happen very last minute and way over budget. But it would happen.

TheSpottedZebra · 27/11/2024 17:59

Men, eh? What are they like?!
They can't even use the washing machine !
Or remember when Little Johnny has swimming!
They'd never manage to get the tree out of the loft and buy some turkey and crackers.

Us Ladies must do it all, and let the men focus on work. And hobbies.

INeedAnotherName · 27/11/2024 17:58

It wouldn't happen.

STBX used to moan over how stressed I was every Christmas and told me it was easy, he even did the shopping every Christmas Eve along with lots of other men so it was women making work for themselves and therefore to blame! So I stopped doing his side of the family and pared back the food and decorations. It was miserable the last two years so I decided to pare it back further and get rid of him. Next Christmas will be amazing 😉

Oh, and yes, his version of Christmas shopping meant he only bought tat for me, eg Christmas jumper reduced in sale. He's never bought for our children. He handed over the money but he didn't have a clue what I'd got until the children unwrapped on Christmas Day as he just didn't care enough. I should have left sooner based on just that but you know, love is blind.

TallNeckedGiraffe · 27/11/2024 17:58

It would be great.
My husband is a fully functioning adult.

WhatNoRaisins · 27/11/2024 17:58

I don't think my DH would do a bad job, the food wouldn't be homemade but he'd get the right stuff. He'd be a lot more last minute with presents so there might be some specific things not available but there would be perfectly acceptable gifts. It wouldn't be a disaster.

Reugny · 27/11/2024 17:58

Fine.

On of my SIL's had to go abroad one year so my brother had to sort out Christmas. He knew exactly what to do, buy and cook. Though my SILs cooking is better than his.

One of my other brothers' does all the cooking for occasions in his household and most of the cooking generally. He sends cards plus buys and wraps presents for his side of the family. My male friends and my DP are the same. All these men cook very well.

Not all men are brought up to be useless around the house plus most of the men I know didn't get married until their 30s or older and spent time living in houseshares then alone.

BridgetRandomfuck · 27/11/2024 17:58

Mine does most of ours anyway! He’s ordered all the food, and will cook it on Xmas day. Buys his family presents and I do mine. I have to put up the tree as he’s pretty clumsy and would probably break most of the ornaments. But he’ll get it out of the loft for me, and has just bought the chocolate decorations. I really should pull my weight more… 😬

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 27/11/2024 17:58

Entirely depends on the man!

If it was my younger son or my brother it would be slightly chaotic but a fabulous dinner, eclectic presents, fabulous decorations and a happy and hysterically funny day.

If my XH, beyond stressed, no presents - or a giant bar of chocolate for everyone, even the diabetics, no decoration, and a burned dinner served with lots of shouting about how he has to do everything around here.

Elder son - very eccentric, probably with roast rook for dinner and decorations made from cat fur, but great fun.

GreyCarpet · 27/11/2024 17:58

Ggmores · 27/11/2024 17:55

Would be great and pretty similar to every year. I can’t imagine being attracted to someone so incompetent they couldn’t buy some presents and cook a meal.

Quite...

My partner is already trying out Christmas Dinner ideas which is great because it means a roast every Sunday and plenty of leftovers for dinner on Monday too.

Catza · 27/11/2024 17:57

It would be fine. Mid December he would show up home with a tree and decorations. Present would be bought at the last minute and there will be a platter of fancy titbits. There will be no rushing around or stress and everyone would have a great day.

TheDandyLion · 27/11/2024 17:57

We'd have exactly the same Christmas if I or both of us were to 'do' it all.

OkPedro · 27/11/2024 17:56

My ex (dcs dad) puts on a great Xmas as he's a fully functioning adult just like me.. I know this is supposed to be light hearted sorry! Laughing at how incompetent some men are isn't really funny is it..

Burntout101 · 27/11/2024 17:56

My husband does most of Christmas in our family. I don't like all the fuss and expense. So it would be same as always for us.

Cynic17 · 27/11/2024 17:56

It would be calm, simple, without any unnecessary nonsense and over in just one day. It would be perfect. As a female, it pains me to say this, but (some) women are ridiculous about Christmas.

TheChosenTwo · 27/11/2024 17:56

We would have a brilliant roast and the tree would be up.
Presents would be lavish if not quite right 😂

he always preps, shops for and cooks Christmas dinner for 20+, it doesn’t phase him. We choose the tree as a family and he saws it and puts it in the stand, the dc decorate it. I take the lead mostly on presents apart from his mum and mine obviously.

Ggmores · 27/11/2024 17:55

Would be great and pretty similar to every year. I can’t imagine being attracted to someone so incompetent they couldn’t buy some presents and cook a meal.

GreyCarpet · 27/11/2024 17:55

My partner does the christmas organising.

Before him, I obviously did it.

It didn't look any different.

He buys his family's presents, I buy mine.

He does the food shopping when he takes his mum to do hers. We write the list together beforehand.

He cooks the Christmas dinner.

He tidies and washes up as he goes and we both do the rest of it on Boxing Day morning.

WildFigs · 27/11/2024 17:54

Ours would be smaller but quirkier than the way I do it-

-DH doesn't buy lots of gifts but the ones he does buy tend to be hits- unusual things that the receiver might never have thought of
-Dinner would be much less meaty and heavier on the root veg. Could be something non-traditional eg parsnip and lentil bake with sprouts and potatoes
-Lots of nice claret
-Decorations would be low effort. A tree, lots of greenery.

Sounds pretty good actually, I should take a year off.

IGuessIllbetheFirst · 27/11/2024 17:53

I voted for unreasonable as many men are perfectly capable of organising and running huge projects, managing to meet all their work commitments and generally succeeding in their work life. Treating men like children at home lets them off the hook and often sets up an unhealthy dynamic with resentment building up on both sides. Most men would be very able to organise a good Christmas! Maybe not exactly the way you like it OP but that is because you would need to let go and stop controlling and enjoy.

Edited for some spelling mistakes!
