Sushi restaurant drama

After reading another similar post I had to get opinions on if I was unreasonable.

I was at a sushi train a few weeks ago with DH and kids. It was close to closing time so there wasn’t a huge selection left. At the booth next to us were four kids, their parents ( four adults) were at the booth opposite the kids. My kids were loudly calling out what they wanted, and as the food went past the table of kids before us they took everything my kids wanted. Despite telling my kids to stop calling out what they wanted, it continued. The kids at the next table had quite a bit of half eaten sushi piled up, the parents hadn’t noticed. I know I should have told the parents their kids were being silly, but due to being a little hangry I said I wanted octopus balls, it was the most expensive plate colour and there were a few, and this is when the parents realised what was happening. They were not pleased, one of the men picked up the plates and put them on our table and said we were paying for it. I grabbed the couple of plates we had actually eaten from and went to the checkout and explained what happened. I only paid what I should have.
A couple of friends said I should have paid for at least some of it.
Was I in the wrong?

Male octopuses have a special sex arm that they use to insemination the female by inserting it into her mantle cavity. I'm so pleased we don't reproduce like that. The creepy guy on the tube 🤢

I think some species will rip their sexy arm off and hurl it at the female but I sometimes eat cheese before bed so I may have dreamed that one.

Well done OP. I'm struggling to think of a better way to have dealt with it that wouldn't have required a long explanatory conversation with the parents. Who would have denied their sprogs were doing it deliberately.

YANBU. They were bad parents by not supervising their kids. The cheek of that man to say you’re paying! No chance.
Also octopus balls are just octopus in the shape of balls, not testicles. Clearly people here don’t eat much sushi lol.

People are joking about the octopus balls. 🙄

But the whole point of Yo Sushi for a kid is picking off the conveyor belt! That’s the fun bit.

I guess that would be fun as a kid.
I am having to imagine, as I think the most exotic we got, when I was little, is phony Mexican food😂

AIBU? can have a habit of turning into IAAH! (I am a hero)

Yes.

And I think that is the case here.

CowTown · 27/11/2024 10:34

OP, I’m confused (not on the goading, but on the outcome).

Why did the parent put the uneaten plate that their kids pulled from the belt onto your table? Did they say, “I know for a fact that you didn’t want the octopus. I know that my kids only took them to be asshats, so you’re paying.”? I need more context here.

Did the other parent end up paying for the octopus in the end?

HarrietBond · 27/11/2024 10:33

I can only assume they are wealthier than Croesus in any case as surely anyone else taking a child anywhere near a sushi conveyor belt is exercising iron control over their choices to avoid having to sell a kidney to pay the bill?

FlatShoesOnly · 27/11/2024 10:33

edited as I see you didn’t pay and you don’t know if they did!

Damnloginpopup · 27/11/2024 07:37

Do octopi have balls?

Don’t they have eight? 🐙

Cwazycupcake · 27/11/2024 10:32

I don’t know if they paid, I got out of there quickly.

I absolutely did goad the kids into taking the last expensive plates. The rest of it was just my kids being excited over what they wanted.

If this is somewhere like Yo Sushi, you can request dishes off the menu, and they will bring it straight over. Doesn’t matter what the plate color is/price. No need to wait forever, for the sushi train

YANBU and the other adults should have supervised their children.

That. How on earth was it your problem?

Cwazycupcake · 27/11/2024 10:24

Thanks all. My friend felt I should pay as I had goaded the kids into grabbing four expensive plates of food they wouldn’t eat.

I do promise to be more adventurous next time I get sushi.

Your friend is either batshit or a complete doormat

i applaud your actions (and hit the wrong button when voting)

Birdseyetrifle · 27/11/2024 10:28

Did the other family pay though?
I think you were 100% in the right.

Newgreensofa · 27/11/2024 10:27

My only experience of sushi trains is the scene in Miranda 😅but I’d say hats off you you, this could be out of Motherland!

AnonymousBleep · 27/11/2024 10:27

Haha, genius, OP! And of course you shouldn't have paid for it, those parents should have been supervising their brats.

No, you absolutely should not pay in this kind of situation.

The children took the plate, their parents did not supervise them (or care about their children being rude). You therefore should not pay.

NineDaysQueen · 27/11/2024 10:26

KenAdams · 27/11/2024 10:18

Why bother posting then? Maybe spend your time getting out more if a sushi train confuses you so much. People are so weird on here.

YWNBU OP.

I posted thinking someone may be kind enough to explain this concept to me (which they did), not for nasty and sarcastic comments.
But if it makes you feel better to tell me to get out more, then bless you - glad to have helped.
BTW, sushi, along with any meal fish-based, is the food of the devil.

lightsandtunnels · 27/11/2024 10:26

YA definitely NBU!
100% the blame falls at the parents of the kids for not supervising them. The father who said you should pay for them is a CF of the highest order. The kids sound like perfect products of parents who don't give too much of a shit and let the kids call the shots.
Your friend is also BU for saying you were goading them and saying you should have paid. Not your kids. Not your responsibility.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 27/11/2024 10:25

JimPanzee · 27/11/2024 07:42

I can't figure out if you ate the octopus or not?

Also I doubt the parents didn't realise until then, they simply didn't care until the kids picked the most expensive items just to waste them.

Precisely. Their parents should have supervised their children.

OP's friends who say she should have paid sound like wet lettuces and trying to avoid a scene. Good for you OP, only paying for food you and your family had eaten.

Pancakeflipper · 27/11/2024 10:21

I think your request for expensive dishes was brilliant.

And the parents shouldn't go to you but take it out of the pocket monies of the -painintheneck children.

CombatLingerie · 27/11/2024 10:20

Ah say I stroking my chin thoughtfully. Am I in need of a new user name? Not sure but ‘Sushi Restaurant Drama’ would be a strong contender.
