Sushi restaurant drama

After reading another similar post I had to get opinions on if I was unreasonable.

I was at a sushi train a few weeks ago with DH and kids. It was close to closing time so there wasn’t a huge selection left. At the booth next to us were four kids, their parents ( four adults) were at the booth opposite the kids. My kids were loudly calling out what they wanted, and as the food went past the table of kids before us they took everything my kids wanted. Despite telling my kids to stop calling out what they wanted, it continued. The kids at the next table had quite a bit of half eaten sushi piled up, the parents hadn’t noticed. I know I should have told the parents their kids were being silly, but due to being a little hangry I said I wanted octopus balls, it was the most expensive plate colour and there were a few, and this is when the parents realised what was happening. They were not pleased, one of the men picked up the plates and put them on our table and said we were paying for it. I grabbed the couple of plates we had actually eaten from and went to the checkout and explained what happened. I only paid what I should have.
A couple of friends said I should have paid for at least some of it.
Was I in the wrong?

It sounds hellish.
Shouting kids and raw fish
The parasites caught from raw fish are horrid-
Tapeworm especially.

Cooking it at least kills the encysted worms.

HappyFitnessQueen · 27/11/2024 10:56

This is amazing - 100% you won! You genius :D
And no, you shouldn't have paid and it's all on the parent and their children. Hopefully, a lesson learnt...although I doubt it as he obviously wasn't assuming any responsibility.

They looked over at the kids table as I possibly a little too loudly said I wanted octopus balls and saw the kids taking it. Then saw all the plates on the table. He said I’m not paying that and dumped it all on our table.

I really don’t understand this. He dumped their half eaten food on your table, just because you said you wanted it? Like surely he understands that you’re not liable to pay regardless of you shouting out you wanted it. He had no leg to stand on regardless of you possibly “goading” his children. He should have been supervising them. If you said you wanted to drink drain cleaner, would they have done that too? All roads lead back to horrendous parenting.

CowTown · 27/11/2024 10:54

Oh come on, if OP would have “gently” let him know that his kids were deliberately taking what they wanted, he 100% isn’t the type of bloke to listen, take it on board, and discipline his kids.

Calliopespa · 27/11/2024 10:49

That’s what I was wondering.

I suppose if you knew what was going on oP, he might have thought you should have alerted him to it rather than inflaming it, albeit that he should have been supervising.

If that was the case, he could have handled it more politely than dumping the stuff HIS KIDS had ordered onto the OP's table. He was as rude and entitled as his brattish kids. Apple not falling far from the tree etc. Bet he wouldn't have done that if she was a bloke, either.

Sure, it would have been nice for OP to alert them, but it's not her responsibility.

It's his own fault for not supervising his bratty kids and leaving them to grab whatever they want.

CowTown · 27/11/2024 10:50

I’m confused about why these parents were so stupid to have separate adult/kids tables at a self-service sushi restaurant, and to natter away with the adults, leaving the kids to their own devices.

The serious police have arrived
No ball quips allowed

WAY too late for that! 😂

AnonymousBleep · 27/11/2024 10:49

It's a bit of a shame that the restaurant lost out because it sounds like nobody ended up paying for the octopus balls - but that's not your fault, OP. The brats clearly are the way they are because of their rude, entitled parents.

Onthesideofthespiders · 27/11/2024 10:46

Had those kids eaten the octopus if they had only just grabbed them when one dad noticed?
Did he hand you the uneaten octopus plates? Because he could have just put them back on the belt. Or did he hand you the stack of half eaten sushi those kids had been collecting the whole time you were there?

That’s what I was wondering.

yukikata · 27/11/2024 10:48

No, why on earth would you pay?

What you did was a bit immature as you should have just told the parents that their kids were being silly, but ultimately, they should have been supervising their children.

It's not your job to pay for that.

Who leaves a table of kids alone to choose what they want from a sushi train anyway?

Yalta · 27/11/2024 10:47

I’m confused that people are confused at what happened.

Expensive game these children were playing

I've literally never heard of chicken balls 🤣

Not the point of the thread but I am agog that someone has never heard of chicken balls

Apollo365 · 27/11/2024 10:46

Hahahahaaaa this is amazing!!!!

They also trigger the beginning of the end of their life by mating so octopus sex is pretty grim all round. It’s called senescence.

I think they do have a single ⚽️. A single gonad for a single shag.

They can either have a digestive system or a reproductive system active, iirc. Mating means they die.

I have occasionally wished we were the same - I look at the kids arguing and wish I’d just stuck with dinner.

pestowithwalnuts · 27/11/2024 10:45

Is it the done thing to shout out what you want to the chef ?
It sounds chaotic

Yes, but you didn’t say, “Hey kids…try the octopus! I hear it’s really good!” You said that you wanted to try the octopus. It’s on him that his kids were trying to bully your table by taking everything that you wanted.

Male octopuses have a special sex arm that they use to insemination the female by inserting it into her mantle cavity. I'm so pleased we don't reproduce like that. The creepy guy on the tube 🤢

I think some species will rip their sexy arm off and hurl it at the female but I sometimes eat cheese before bed so I may have dreamed that one.

Well done OP. I'm struggling to think of a better way to have dealt with it that wouldn't have required a long explanatory conversation with the parents. Who would have denied their sprogs were doing it deliberately.

Christ on a bike - thanks for that vivid explanation 😂

CustardCreams2 · 27/11/2024 10:44

Has anyone had the ones at Wagamama where the have flakes on them that move and look like they’re waving at you?

NavyOrca · 27/11/2024 10:43

NineDaysQueen · 27/11/2024 07:42

Do they have balls in each arm in the same way they have a brain in each?

This thread 😅🤣🤣🤣

CowTown · 27/11/2024 10:34

OP, I’m confused (not on the goading, but on the outcome).

Why did the parent put the uneaten plate that their kids pulled from the belt onto your table? Did they say, “I know for a fact that you didn’t want the octopus. I know that my kids only took them to be asshats, so you’re paying.”? I need more context here.

Did the other parent end up paying for the octopus in the end?

They looked over at the kids table as I possibly a little too loudly said I wanted octopus balls and saw the kids taking it. Then saw all the plates on the table. He said I’m not paying that and dumped it all on our table.

You're 100% in the right. I don't think you were even really goading the kids - if anything they were goading YOU by, as far as they were concerned, intentionally stopping you have what you 'wanted'.

Not your fault the parents raised little obnoxious twits. More reasonable/ less greedy children might think 'oh the lady at the next table wants that, so let's leave one'.
