New neighbours

After 10 years in our current property we have now have new neighbours. We have a side by side driveway and have been overlooking them partially on our drive as they were moving in with a van. Today they have finished moving in and have their own car and van at the property. We noticed today that their van had been parked completely on our drive and up against our garage. We could neither access the garage, which we need to as hubby has motorbike in there, or get out of our gate. We left in an hour or so then knocked on the door. They said sorry but they needed access to their drive as they were expecting a delivery. We said we didn’t mind but would have been nice if you’d just knocked and asked as how were we to know if it wasn’t gona be there at 5 in the morning when hubby was going to work. I think they were being very cheeky with their assumption that could could just do that but aibu?

That's good to hear OP - hopefully they were just stressed

Stumpy54321 · 16/12/2024 19:52

An update on our new neighbours. The lady introduced herself to my hubby and apologised for any inconvenience they caused whilst moving in. We then took in a parcel for them when she came round to collect it she gave us a bottle of wine. Up until today I still hadnt seen or spoken to them but today I finally got to see and speak to her. Seem really nice people and very chatty hopefully will be the start of good neighbours

But didn't that just shift the problem to other households on the main road?

no..because the main road was a very less populated road as it was mostly corn fields

depends if the "hubby" is considerate or not. My husband used to have a motorbike when we were younger, and we lived on a culdesac that went down to a main road. He walked it down the culdesac and started it around the corner, as..like us, our neighbors had small children and I (and my neighbors) would have been mighty pissed off if he woke our kiddos that early!!!

stargazerlil · 25/11/2024 21:19

Of course you are being reasonable, you’ve addressed it so hopefully it doesn’t happen again, if it does then oh dear, good job your DH can rev that motorbike to passive aggressively piss them off.

I see yes sorry read your post wrong

momager1 · 25/11/2024 18:27

yes obviously! I was responding to the fact that they won't like his motorbike starting at 5 am, not saying the new neighbors were fine parking there in the first place!

If the garage was blocked in and he was unable to get his bike out that would of been an issue obviously

Maybe, you've been planning to landscape your drive for ages and now is the time. Decorative fence panels with a narrow shrub/flower border at it's base. While you're at it, you should really address those security concerns about DH's bike getting nicked out of your garage and install a surveillance camera on the corner of the garage. It's not very expensive to achieve these long awaited upgrades. Aren't Amazon and eBay a boon for little garden jobs? 😉

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 25/11/2024 18:19

That was SO tactless of them. If they'd knocked, introduced themselves and asked if they could use your drive for a couple of hours while moving in, then you might have been delighted to help a new neighbour, but they've made things awkward by failing to ask. At least now they hopefully know that it's not OK to do it whenever convenient.

I don't see the issue or question that needs addressing really,. Were they being cheeky? - who knows what they were thinking but don't overthink it.

If you've been without neighbours for 10 years you'll be used to not having other people in your space, so it will be a shock when people literally get in your space, but if they are reasonable people you'll rub along ok if you keep on communicating (and not ruminating)

We have had neighbours just we had the same ones since we moved in 10 years ago

They'll probably move out pretty sharpish after a few weeks of hearing "hubby"'s motorbike at 5am.

Give them a couple of days grace then layeth the smacketh down.

TTPDTS · 25/11/2024 17:59

I mean I understand they might have needed their side of the drive, but surely you'd park on the road before blocking your neighbours side without asking!

Ablondiebutagoody · 25/11/2024 17:59

If you didn't have a car on your drive, maybe they thought you were at work. I probably would have just let it go. Moving is hard work

Fence - ASAP.

Doesnt matter if they have been nice about it, after the fact.

Fence is the way to avoid aggro.

GrandHighPoohbah · 25/11/2024 17:56

Hopefully it was just a bit of thoughtlessness as they were busy moving in. You're absolutely right to address it though, it's amazing how quickly convenient things become habit if people think you don't mind.

Flatulence · 25/11/2024 17:36

They were being huge CFs by not asking but they've apologised now so I'd let this drop.
Obviously if they continue to do things like this it's different.
But you say they seem sincere and seem otherwise pleasant then don't hold a grudge. Moving house is exhausting and I'd give them the benefit of the doubt this time that they just didn't think.

Stumpy54321 · 25/11/2024 17:28

Raineys · 25/11/2024 17:23

They have shown you that complete CF's have moved next door.
You have been warned, be on your guard.
These are not going to be people to give an inch too.
Unlucky.

the lady did seem really nice when hubby spoke to her. It was the man that parked the van on the driveway. Hubby said he seemed genuine with his apology so hopefully a one off

What did they say when you said it would have been nice if they had asked first!

They just apologised. I actually havnt spoken to them at all it was hubby that did but hes spoken to the lady the other day when they were moving in she said sorry for any inconvenience they were causing and we completely understood that. But it was just they didn’t think to ask. We were unsure how long the van would be there for and we couldn’t even access the gate to the garden.
