I mean, I very much doubt this will get anywhere in the parliament but nearly 2 mil people signed it in just over 24 hours 😬

@Artistbythewater Labour have been in power for five months yet they are expected to solve the problems that have dogged the last decade. If Labour’s policies are stopping business investing in employees, plant and equipment etc, what has prevented them doing this prior to the election?

Who do you think would make a better government and why?

louddumpernoise · 26/11/2024 18:49

EasternStandard · 26/11/2024 17:44

Then again 70% think it's worse now with Labour and only 8% that it's better

It's not quite matched on these threads

TBF When asked "Should assisted dying be legal?" almost 70% said YES

When the question was reframed to include methods and procedures, just 11% said YES.

the point here is: how something is asked makes a big difference, so "Are you so fed up with Labour that you want the Tories back?" would get a very different response.

the other thing is, it really doesn't matter what anyone thinks, Labour are in for the next 5 years and unless the Tories up their game, they wont be in either, i've yet to hear of a single Tory policy on anything at all.

BIossomtoes · 26/11/2024 18:35

We weathered the crash thanks to the conservatives taking over.

Did we fuck. Time for this chart to come out again.

Fuckin ell... the Tories took over 2 years later... we were well past the worst by then.

Osbourne then decided on 5 years of Austerity, but somehow still managed to increase debt to GDP, quite a trick, borrow more but end up with far less.
then once fully in power in 2015, decided on another 5 years of cuts.... but not even content with that, your buffoon Cameron decided to call a fucking EU referendum, complete with no rules! just a simple majority of 1 was enough, the twat.

Condemning us to years of division and economic loss, which will carry on for decades to come.

After Cameron, May and Truss, Tories have a brass neck blaming Labour for the economy. Sunak spaffed millions on Rwanda and Johnson wasted how much on PPE and other disasters?

Now they want them back - it must be a kink.

Lol, i thought MN had guidelines on mis information?

Because i'm certain that the financial crash in 2008 was GLOBAL and started in the USA, made worse by not supporting Lehmans ?

But you know this, so are working on the "repeat a lie enough times and people will believe it" rubbish.

We weathered the crash very well, thats to having low debt to GDP of 42%, after 14 years of your lot, its now 100%....

UK Gilts going from 1.5% to 5% was a UK only impact, caused by your idiot Liz Truss, UK still paying the costs of that and will be for many years.

Yep, rules introduced by the Tories..... & ones Labour need to reverse, the only people benefiting from forcing traditional car companies to make & sell EVs are the Chinese EV only manufacturers.

louddumpernoise · 26/11/2024 17:02

Artistbythewater · 26/11/2024 09:33

You conveniently left out the financial crisis Labour caused in 2008 after a huge sending spree that left our country completely exposed when the financial crash happened. It took nearly a decade to recover. Just in time for the pandemic to hit, which cost trillions of pounds. We then had the Russian war in Europe and the cost of living that it created.

Please stop rewriting history.
People voted hoping it would make things better in their lives, and they are just realising the reverse is true. They will become poorer, and the money created will be absorbed by our bloated public services and until we are ready for real root change this country will continue to decline.

Yet everything has got much better in the last fourteen years.

The last thing we need right now is for Labour to drive the economy into recession. I am nervous as hell, because so much is riding on stability at the moment.

Meanwhile they are just not addressing the main issues:

Immigration controls
People smugglers
Social care
Crime and policing
Overcrowding
Able bodied, healthy people claiming benefits for decades

EasternStandard · 26/11/2024 16:37

JusteanBiscuits · 26/11/2024 16:19

Because sometimes the private sector is the best option. I don't know exactly what you are referring to, but any government should be finding the best option, what ever the sector.

@JusteanBiscuits by contracting I mean the recent S&P PMI report, here's the Bloomberg headline, other outlets picked up the same

Economics
UK Private Sector Stagnates After Budget Tax Hike, PMI Shows

  • Index drops just below level dividing growth from contraction
  • Slowdown blamed on budget increase to employer payroll levy

22 November 2024 at 09:30 GMT

The impression I get from your posts is that Starmer and Reeves have planned what is happening, but why would they want to stagnate the private sector and growth?

Is it that they've made mistakes or how else would you rationalise stagnation, especially since the opposite is required for increased public spending

SnappyGreyLemur · 26/11/2024 16:21

Artistbythewater · 26/11/2024 13:50

It isn’t going to happen, you are still peddling the lie. If you wait long enough Labour will transform the country…< tumbleweed literally> do you even believe this? It’s quite tragic.

Yet everything has got much better in the last fourteen years.

By doing my research before the election, it was clear things would need to become worse before getting better.

@JusteanBiscuits why would contracting the private sector be part of what Labour wanted?

It won't be possible for an increase in public spending to occur with lower take

It wasn't forecast but has since happened post July

Again for those going on about 'inherited' as if Labour haven't slowed growth and decreased the PMI contracting the private sector

The CBI and IoD disagree with you

Rain Newton-Smith, chief executive of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) on Monday said that businesses were in “damage control” mode following the Chancellor’s tax raid, with nearly two-thirds of employers cutting their hiring plans as a result.

Deutsche Bank has warned the Budget measures will cost the UK economy 100,000 jobs.

The Budget measures will “absolutely” make it harder for the 9.2m people who are economically inactive in the UK to rejoin the workforce, warns Anna Leach, chief economist at the Institute of Directors (IoD).

EasternStandard · 26/11/2024 14:32

For those waiting for change this is the problem Labour have created

Inherited, not created. The scaremongering is getting so tedious.

JusteanBiscuits · 26/11/2024 15:40

EasternStandard · 26/11/2024 15:23

I didn't vote labour, but I am pleased to have a prime minister who isn't afraid of making the hard decisions rather than only being focused on their 'optics'

This isn't true, given the sheer amount of photo ops he's engaged in as a way to promote image

Also he and Reeves should take note of the CBI, and IoD

It's all very well soft soaping with here's your 'difficult decisions' and for some bizarre reason people say ok - maybe they're not in the groups feeling the impact - but what the CBI and IoD are warning about is worsening not improving.

Labour should be concerned about that

By doing my research before the election, it was clear things would need to become worse before getting better. Some seriously tough changes needed to be bought in.

I'm not elderly, I'm not a farmer and no one in my family has a big enough estate to be hit by any IHT, but I was quite heavily affected by the Tory government.

(again, for clarity, I didn't vote Labour in the last election)

What photo ops? Promote what? If it’s government policy that’s his job…not aware of anything else.
