To find this so cringeworthy?

(I realise using the word cringeworthy is a bit cringeworthy in itself, but here we are...)

Literally posting this so I don't end up telling him what I'm thinking!

I've been seeing a guy off and on for a year and he's a lovely person, but keeps coming out with things that just make me die a little inside.

The latest one is he went to the cinema with his friends last night to see Wicked.
He has this habit of messaging me after he's seen a film to let me know how he found it and the message last night read "It had greatest showman vibes, and the hallmarks of a classic". I almost, almost... replied with a bunch of laughy faces and told him to stop talking like a dick but I thought I should try and be kind so I just said something about being glad he likes it.

But I've never heard anyone in real life use the phrase "hallmarks of a classic" to describe a film, let alone something like Wicked?!

He also uses the word belly for his stomach...

I like him, but omg I cringe so hard sometimes at his choice of words!

I'd find that message an utter cringefest to receive. I don't think he sounds like he has a good vocabularly, I think he sounds like he's regurgitating clichés.

Just had to Google Wicked and a bloke going to see that with his mates would give me the vomitorious ick. Sorry.

Good grief, do you have any idea what Wicked is actually about? Do you know the premise of the film?

CurlewKate · 25/11/2024 09:50

Why wouldn't a man go to see wicked? My DS did and cried twice.....

TheLyingBitchintheWardrobe · 25/11/2024 08:46

My son loved the Fast and Furious films, I didn't, but I still took him because I love him and he's my son ♥️

I’ve already commented that I find nothing wrong with what he said.

Just to add though that I took my DC (including a DS) to see Wicked without my DH, because he has no interest in it and we don’t have to do everything together.

Sometimes he takes them to the cinema to see films that I have no interest in, to give me a few hours to myself.

Sometimes we go as a family.

For him it’s not about Wicked ‘not being for men’, as he’s been to see plenty of Disney and other animated films, and other musicals. He’s just not interested in this one, and I was happy to give him a few hours to himself at the weekend!

We still love our DC despite not going to see every film together 🙄

Oh, he's got a little fantasy going that he's a film critic, hasn't he? I bet he writes reviews on IMDB and You Tube and it makes him feel important and authoritative.

The fact that he voluntarily paid to see Wicked and rated it would be it for me. No discerning, thoughtful adult would do that.

What a peculiar response. Someone wanting to be a film critic is hardly a bad thing, and the comment about adults watching a perfectly good film... I can't tell if you're trying to be funny or something?

LTB - he’s far too rounded for you OP. Then next time you’re on Hinge be sure to stand outside Wetherspoons on a match day or the local bookies and swipe away. Maybe put in your bio articulate film buffs needn’t apply.

🙄

The comments here about men watching the biggest blockbuster of the year reminds me of who MN is actually made up of. Gross.

It's not weird to like cinema and to go see all films, its not weird to like musicals, especially a classic that has been out for over two decades and is based on a very adult book.

’Who MN is actually made up of. Gross.’

There are some posts who have made some shit comments about men watching musicals but definitely the vast majority have not done that and many of us have called it out… and where do posters like us fit in it? Do you not form part of ‘MN’?

Without derailing comments like this are ironically the same reason why I find the DP’s comments cringeworthy - empty soundbites without critical thought. It just comes across as a weird ‘I’m not like other girls Mumsnet posters’ when actually most of the posters on this thread do in fact share the same opinion that a man should be able to see a musical if he wishes.

The comments about a man watching the biggest blockbuster of the year have been overwhelmingly positive, with perhaps two posters at most suggesting it was odd to have seen the film. Which clearly indicates MN, with very few exceptions, is 'made up of' people with little time for regressive gender stereotypes. What's gross about that?

Julie168 · 25/11/2024 09:42

I'd have to reply with 'Hall mark of a classic? Wicked? You're hilarious 😂😂😂. Then see how he responds - that will tell you everything IMO. If he takes it with good humour then I'd say he's a keeper. If he gets all defensive and cross and starts asking you what you mean then I'd call it a day.

If you're going to cope with someone so pretentious then they need to be able to take a bit of ribbing IMO.

I like a good vocabulary so wouldn't cringe at this. Presumably he's a movie fan and wants to see a much hyped film, rather than being gay as the other posters are hinting at.

Honestly I hope my son can use whichever words he likes and see whatever films he wants without women telling him how icky he is.

This. Just let him be the person he is, and if you don’t like that person, or a lot about him irritates you, then he’s not the one for you. I’d hate my brothers or son to be in a relationship where someone found them “cringeworthy” and things they said made the person die inside. Everyone is different and if you don’t like things about him, instead of complaining about it, end it.

Theak · 25/11/2024 09:34

DustyLee123 · 25/11/2024 07:34

I don’t know any male who wants to see Wicked.

what is your point?

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 25/11/2024 09:30

Calm down, Gobby. Learn to enunciate, at least.

Nothing wrong with what I wrote it was perfectly understandable. To paraphrase she's got fuck all to worry about but thinks I will write about what my nice boyfriend has said when he's been to the cinema. Belly is a word that people like myself do use. You know all this right stop being facetious .
I also think she comes across like a child all this uts so cringe there are people Lonely that would love a nice boyfriend they you have this woman whinge on like this

AnonymousBleep · 25/11/2024 09:33

On the cringe scale, that's only about a 3/10, so I think it's just that you're not that into him.

5128gap · 25/11/2024 09:31

WinkingJadeEye · 25/11/2024 09:07

He is probably more articulate than the OP, and deserves somebody of similar verbal ability.

I'm not sure that even the most enthusiastic advocate of the man could have read both his comment and the OPs posts and come to that conclusion! It's nice that you want to stand up for the random guy you've never met, but there's no need to descend into fantasy.

GoneTooFarAgain · 25/11/2024 09:29

Seems like you are already losing a little bit of respect for him which is a slippery slope towards the ick. Maybe he's just not for you.

Pluvia · 25/11/2024 09:29

CountZacular · 25/11/2024 09:28

I would find that cringeworthy, but I’m not sure if it’s for the same reasons as OP.

I know someone who uses clichéd terms like this in place of their own opinion. It’s very ‘I read this in a review and it sounds intelligent’. However I don’t think it is: it lacks thought and consideration (what is a hallmark of a classic? What qualities does this movie share?).

I wouldn’t stop dating someone because of that necessarily but I’d rather be with someone who can articulate their own thoughts instead of using over-used soundbites.

As an aside though, what the hell is this crap about men not liking musicals unless they are gay? I thought we’d moved past this rubbish.
It show how gender ideology has been able to take root so successfully with such rigid thoughts about what men and women ought to enjoy.

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 25/11/2024 09:27

Bpuss · 25/11/2024 09:22

"I enjoyed the film" would have been fine...

It was just the cliche 'hallmarks of a classic" like that got me. I mean, I don't understand what he meant by that. I haven't seen the film but to me, classic has an incredible musical score, complex characters, that kind of thing. Wicked just seems like Hollywood fluff with a typically predictable plot so I also took issue with the comment for that reason too.

Blimey. You'd better pray none of the hardcore Wicked fans stumble across this thread. 😂A hex on you!

HVPRN · 25/11/2024 09:27

Another vote for I don't see any 'icks' from him. Sounds like a nice guy.

Some people text/write better than they speak.

Likely not the guy for you but only you truly know that.
