To think that people with extreme political views shouldn’t be allowed to vote?

Far-left and far-right ideologies are tearing society apart. Should we limit the influence of extremists?

Women? For some reason we appear in most lists....

KendraTheVampyrSlayer · 24/11/2024 22:02

And who else shouldn't be allowed to vote? People with certain skin colour? People from a certain religion? People with a certain heritage? Sounds very Germany in the 1930s.

Quercus30 · 24/11/2024 22:01

You are suggesting that the only people allowed to vote should be those without any political views?

Warmhome1 · 24/11/2024 22:01

Intolerance vill not be tolerated.

I think anyone who votes labour or conservative is extremely unhinged. And therefore shouldn't be allowed to vote

MushMonster · 24/11/2024 21:58

Well, you can come off it now. It is going to be YABU, very much so.
You cannot ban anyone from voting, of ban any political ideology or party just because you do not deem them within a given spectrum.
Only if they are pushing for illegal actions, then they will go to jail.

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 24/11/2024 21:57

Wanting to ban some people from voting is a pretty bloody extreme political view, in my opinion.

IrritableVowel · 24/11/2024 21:56

So everyone has to declare in advance how they're voting, to see if they are allowed a vote?

How do you suggest that's done?

Fizzadora · 24/11/2024 21:56

Not necessary. They generally cancel each other out.

People here asking me to define what I mean as if we don’t know what “extremist” means. I have also alluded to far-left and far-right.

Only one person so far has commented with a bit of sense and a somewhat normal comment instead of asking stupidness like “define extreme” and “are you saying people who disagree with us shouldn’t vote”. Come off it.

Well I don’t have a problem with inheritance tax; I’d love us to live in a country where everyone was warm and fed, and has access to decent healthcare; and my heart breaks at the plight of those poor Palestinian children. That would make me ‘far left’ in the eyes of many people.

MarketValveForks · 24/11/2024 21:53

Absolutely not.

When an extreme position is banned it actually becomes more popular. Many people are drawn to something forbidden.

When there is freedom of speech and anyone can stand for any platform then it is obvious quite how unpopular these extremes are. It's a good thing for the distasteful extremes to be fully visible as what they are - frothing-at-the-mouth loons. I don't want them driven underground into secret meetings where their lies and exaggerations can be spread unchallenged. I want them out in the open where their ignorance can be ridiculed and their disingenuous twisting of facts exposed.

ByMerryKoala · 24/11/2024 21:52

How do we balance far right and far left - are we excluding equal numbers from both sides or do you have an idea of how far right and left you can be before being disenfranchised in this dystopian fiction?

It's a perfectly legitimate question. How do you define "far" left or right. Who decides? One man's extreme is another man's moderate

Barring people from voting because you don't like the way they vote is facisim and I don't think we want that, or do you? In which case, you are the extremist

Deadhouseplant · 24/11/2024 21:41

Are you suggesting we do away with democracy?

lol if only OP had thought one step ahead.
“Democracy - we’ll be just fine without it!”

TheNewSchmoo · 24/11/2024 21:50

How far is far. Is there a chart?

You can reply as sniffily as you like, but the style of responses are directly linked to the ridiculousness your question.

ThinWomansBrain · 24/11/2024 21:49

yabu - but with undemocratic FPTP it makes no difference anyway

Hateam · 24/11/2024 21:49

OK different question

How are you going to find out what the private thoughts of 25 million people are?

You do realise that your view is extreme OP...

🙄

Echobelly · 24/11/2024 21:47

YABU - democracy is democracy. People whose views I find repugnant still have the right to vote. Who would decide what is 'extreme' for a start? We've seen an increase in both normalisation of extreme views, and fairly normal views being 'Overton windowed' as 'extreme'.

MushMonster · 24/11/2024 21:46

Well, only if they have policies that are against the law and constitution of the country they enter the electoral system in, or against human rights. But I am pretty sure those controls are already in place.

We cannot ban groups because they are controversial! That is very much on the authoritarian side of things, not on the democratic one.
They are easy enough to crash by not voting them.

sprigatito · 24/11/2024 21:46

I'd say you have a pretty extreme view right there, OP...so no vote for you!

I disagree with what you say, but i would die to defend your right to say it. DEMOCRACY.

Cynic17 · 24/11/2024 21:43

So you think it's a good idea to destroy democracy, OP? Everyone is entitled to their opinions (& votes), regardless of whether you agree.

emmetgirl · 24/11/2024 21:43

Define extreme

Delorian · 24/11/2024 21:43

What a lovely paradox you've created there.
