To think that people with extreme political views shouldn’t be allowed to vote?

Far-left and far-right ideologies are tearing society apart. Should we limit the influence of extremists?

Quid custodet ipsos custodes, buddy. Just think about it for five seconds. How did you think "voting" worked under Stalin?

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes.

With radical and extreme latin like that you definitely don't get a vote 😀

InWithThePlums · 24/11/2024 22:45

Anyway, if you want to kick off a revolution, this is probably the way to go.

InWithThePlums · 24/11/2024 22:44

I think that might be quite an extreme view in and of itself OP 😬 maybe you shouldn’t be allowed to vote?

EdgyEagle · 24/11/2024 21:45

People here asking me to define what I mean as if we don’t know what “extremist” means. I have also alluded to far-left and far-right.

Only one person so far has commented with a bit of sense and a somewhat normal comment instead of asking stupidness like “define extreme” and “are you saying people who disagree with us shouldn’t vote”. Come off it.

But you would have to clearly define your terms in order to bring this into law. If you think it’s a realistic and reasonable proposal, you must have thought about these points in order to be able to advocate for them. That’s if you want a proper debate, and not just to plop on a goady post and watch the chaos ensue…

FennelFan · 24/11/2024 22:40

But who decides what is extreme? I think Reform voters are extreme. Presumably lots of people would disagree. I think your idea of limiting democracy is extreme so you'd lose out too.

YellowAsteroid · 24/11/2024 22:36

Oh, don’t be so silly @EdgyEagle

Thepurplepig · 24/11/2024 22:34

I can absolutely guarantee that the OP is a labour voter that is pissed off there is a petition of nearly 2 million people asking for a general election. These people in her eyes will be extremists.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 24/11/2024 22:30

I think that your OP is an extreme political view.

RedToothBrush · 24/11/2024 22:27

Well I think your view is pretty extreme. What with wanting to disenfranchise lots of people because you don't like their views.

So I guess your name will go on the list of people with extreme views who aren't allowed to vote.

Bravo OP.

Badgerandfox227 · 24/11/2024 21:43

You want Fascism?

Or Stalinism, to provide a touch of unMN balance!

PinkiOcelot · 24/11/2024 22:25

I don’t think you could possibly know who was either extreme right or extreme left. How could that possibly work?!

I genuinely don’t know what ‘extremist’ means in the context you’re discussing. To my mind, voting for reform, denying climate change, being in favour of the death penalty and being anti-abortion are all extremist views, but denying people who hold them the right to vote would hardly be uncontroversial. I expect there are people who would consider me to hold extreme views on the basis that I believe in entirely decriminalising abortion at any stage of pregnancy, don’t believe in custodial sentences for the overwhelming majority of crimes and think we should defund the police.

Who gets to decide what extremism is? You can’t just make a vague statement like ‘oh we all know what extremism is’ and expect it to stand. It’s an ever-evolving concept created by a country’s shifting political perspectives, not a fixed point you can use to exclude groups of people from the process of creating those perspectives.

Some of those things are fairly extreme if not completely bonkers. I'm going to put you on a list for when I come to power 🤣

echt · 24/11/2024 22:23

One way of limiting the effects of extremism is to have compulsory voting as they do in Australia.

Would that work for you, @EdgyEagle ?

Well I don’t have a problem with inheritance tax; I’d love us to live in a country where everyone was warm and fed, and has access to decent healthcare; and my heart breaks at the plight of those poor Palestinian children. That would make me ‘far left’ in the eyes of many people.

Does your heart break for the Israeli children who were murdered in the attacks, including those who are still being held hostage?

verycloakanddaggers · 24/11/2024 22:16

Your view is extreme.

HaddyAbrams · 24/11/2024 22:14

How is this going to work? Who decides what counts as extreme, and how do they find out everyone's political views?

LemonZesty · 24/11/2024 22:12

Removing the right to vote from people you disagree with politically is a pretty extreme political view.

Anonymouseposter · 24/11/2024 22:11

If people are denied a political voice they turn to other methods to get heard, particularly if they have extreme views. It would encourage violent protest etc.
I also agree that the definition of "extreme" is subjective.

miniaturepixieonacid · 24/11/2024 22:11

Of course not. Everyone is entitled to their vote.

If anything, I'd say the people who 'don't deserve' their vote are the 'a-political' types who have literally never thought or read enough about politics to have an informed opinion and vote based on their parents/random selection/other spurious reason. At least extremist have an opinion!

But of course even those people do and should have the right to vote.

OrwellianTimes · 24/11/2024 22:10

How very Orwellian. No freethink allowed.

CranfordScones · 24/11/2024 22:10

So a world where only your self-evidently correct opinion prevails.

No, the solution to extremism is better centrism.

Switcher · 24/11/2024 22:08

KendraTheVampyrSlayer · 24/11/2024 22:02

And who else shouldn't be allowed to vote? People with certain skin colour? People from a certain religion? People with a certain heritage? Sounds very Germany in the 1930s.

Edited

Sounds like a good start.....😂

BadBarry · 24/11/2024 22:06

I think that would be an extreme view - your concern is other people's extreme views but curbing freedoms to vote is very extreme in my opinion.
When you want to dictate this sort of thing it comes across very "curtain twitching" behaviour.
As long as people are law abiding they should vote whatever their views, freedoms are hard to win back once lost and humans invariably have such different standards on what is far left and what is far right.
I would say I'm in the middle ground but believing in biological sex is considered far right by some so no this would be a terrible idea.
