Why do men just stand around on street corners?

I don't get it. Living in an inner city area and there's always groups of men just standing around for hours on end and in the freezing cold in winter. What do they get out of it? It's usually different cultures/immigrants or whatever, but I kind of feel sorry for them that they've got nothing better to do; it's just a real irritant though when they hang around in packs by your house. Just go away.

I’ve honestly never encountered this.

Even then though, where I live there's two parks within a 10 minute walk, rather than standing in a residential street all day/evening.

Where they'd be accused of loitering around children, no doubt.

KendraTheVampyrSlayer · 24/11/2024 16:50

Touting for customers probably.

'It's usually different cultures/immigrants or whatever' From the OP.

It is by mine anyway because it's a multi-cultural area.

It's because their temporary accommodation kicks them out during the day, and they have no money to go elsewhere....

I wondered myself this years ago when the gurkhas got the right to reside in the UK after their service with their families. You used to see loads of elderly Nepalese walking back and forth to town every day, and sitting around in the town centre, whatever the weather. And it was because their temporary accommodation, which was hostel rooms sharing with others (that was all they could afford) would kick them out in the day.

It's a sad state of affairs.

I've never witnessed this. South West Scotland.

Wouldn’t lots of parents complain if parks were a place where groups of men started hanging out?

I had to stop taking my kids to my local parks due to this. They were just drinking and staring so I can’t say they ever did anything wrong but I felt uncomfortable.

People don’t like groups of teens (including white ones ) doing the same so it’s not a racism thing.

The only place I see white women do this is the school run but needs must.

I see a lot of this in Hull. I have no idea what they’re doing. They must be bloody freezing for a start.

As I said though I do feel sorry for them that they have nothing else to do. It's anti-social though IMO. There's plenty of green spaces around away from people's homes.

And we live in a free society, are they intimidating anyone, being aggressive, or just hanging around because there's nothing else to do, nowhere to go, no money, no centres, halls, churches or warm spaces they could go to instead and feel welcome.

Corner Boys. It's nothing new.

MarvelJesus · 24/11/2024 16:44

Lots of b&b accommodation requires (or used to) you to be out during the day, so if they’ve been housed there, that could be the answer. Some people have nowhere to be. If they aren’t bothering you it’s nothing to be concerned by.

Guavafish1 · 24/11/2024 16:43

Perverts

Maybe they’re just having a chat to their mates? Would you object if it were a bunch of white women?

Presumably because it's free. Maybe they can't meet at anyone's home and can't afford to sit in the pub or whatever.

I assume that they are selling drugs but a free place to hang out makes sense.

x2boys · 24/11/2024 16:41

Where i live its because they are waiting for drugs ,but they are not specifically immigrants.

ohyesido · 24/11/2024 16:40

Happens here in a rough part of Essex, gangs of youths in hoods on scooters outside the bus station, the shopping centre and by the entrance to the cycle track. Very intimidating

It happens everywhere. In NI it tends to happen in areas that have high poverty levels. Where I live they're known as corner boys.

Maybe some people feel intimidated by groups of men hanging around 🤔

Hmmm. Maybe some people like to start goady threads on the internet.
