2nd thoughts about buying house with swimming pool next door

WiseGreyShark · 23/11/2024 09:53

We have found an ideal property for us but the next door neighbours have a swimming pool in their garden. It's built into the ground, not a inflated pool.

I am having second thoughts incase the pool floods or there are other problems. My wife loves the house and it ticks all the boxes.

The houses are detached if that makes a difference.

Any thoughts? Thanks

Possibility of constant screaming of brats in the summer would put me off

This is exactly what I thought your objection would be!

wombat1a · 23/11/2024 11:09

If its in the ground then surely it's more likely to act as a holding tank in times of flooding/torrential rain then be a source of flooding itself?

StormingNorman · 23/11/2024 11:07

I’d buy the house and start making friends hahaha!

Bellyblueboy · 23/11/2024 11:04

Garden pools attract rats. So have a look over the fence to see how well maintained the pool is.

i have a friend who lives next door to a house with a pool. There have been issues with rats and the people obviously enjoy outdoors - so there are bbqs and outdoor sound systems and a tv etc all in the garden. My friend is a read quietly in the garden type and she never gets a peace. Parties every weekend.

They do seem like a happy bunch next door though😊

kindlyensure · 23/11/2024 10:59

Ha - as long as I have had my daily swim (which I am quite evangelical about in the summer) then yes, come on over. I'd rather it was used when it was open.

OP - do you mean the pool leaking? (Because that has never happened either. We are very vigilant with tile replacement, maintenance etc, but even then there would be a thick old layer to get through before any fissures were discovered).

It might be prudent to have a drains survey though. For example, in the unlikely event we would have to drain our pool, we know exactly where the water would flow away to. Perhaps it might give you peace of mind to understand the plumbing in your area (if you can find out?!)

Spacedoom · 23/11/2024 10:53

I wouldn't be worried about the flooding aspect. Is there any chance that the house is an airbnb or rental, that would put me off more.

Mumofteenandtween · 23/11/2024 10:51

I really want to live where all the posters do that are concerned about noise all summer long. (Or hopeful for pool invites all summer.)

This summer in Yorkshire there would have been 45 minutes of pool noise in April, a good 2 hours in July and 17 minutes in August.

CocoPlum · 23/11/2024 10:50

Yeah the noise needs to be considered. My friend has a pool and the kids get v loud around it. They are not overly near the neighbours but I can hear them a distance away as we approach the house.

JustinThyme · 23/11/2024 10:48

You are being ridiculous. Swimming pools don’t flood.

LeaveALittleNote · 23/11/2024 10:46

I’ve lived directly next door to houses with swimming pools three times before. There were never problems with any of them.

Brats? You sound nice.

I am nice but screaming brats are definitely not nice.

Cerialkiller · 23/11/2024 10:44

I've designed in ground pools. They have overflows and any top up systems are either manual or the automatic ones have sensors. I've never heard of one flooding, and if they did it wouldn't be a tidel wave, more like a hosepipe being left on.

The only situation I might be wary of is if the garden with the pool is significantly higher and the pool was old. If the fabric of the pool leaks it might seep though to you but again this shouldn't be an issue in the UK where earthquakes and extreme heat/cold isn't a thing.

About the noise, ime people don't use their pool as much as you think, especially an unheated outdoor pool. On days over high 20s and special occasions maybe.

Buy the house!

cgwmtl · 23/11/2024 10:41

I'd be more bothered about the potential of constant noise in the summer. When you want to be relaxing in your garden there could be a whole pile of kids next door enjoying the pool and they are unlikely to be doing that quietly.
It depends on whether the neighbours have children and how old they are and how much it would annoy you if they are outside all day long in the summer playing in the pool.
Even if they don't have kids they might have noisy pool parties until late in the evening.
It wouldn't really bother me to be honest but if it does bother you or your wife then you should think again about the property.

ginasevern · 23/11/2024 10:36

I'm not aware of swimming pools flooding as a common problem. What makes you think it is? I would however be wary of "pool parties" with lots of screaming kids and loud music throughout the summer.

daffodilandtulip · 23/11/2024 09:56

The way the kids next door scream in a temporary pool, it'd be a quick no from me!

Yep this was my first thought.

We have an inground, old-school pool (with a diving board, so deep). It's never flooded in the 40 years it's been there (maybe it's time!)

And yes - it's a lovely thing to have and to share and our neighbours are very welcome.

(Kids on trampolines are noisier, ime).

I would love a neighbour like this !🤣

God, buy the house as soon as possible! Become their best friend and you can go swimming all summer.

To be serious, I've never heard of a domestic swimming pool flooding, or causing any other sort of technical problem.

janeandmarysmum · 23/11/2024 10:18

My neighbours have a pool and when the children play in it it is very noisy. Due to the awful summer we've just had though, it's only been noisy two or three times recently.

I wouldn’t call them brats but I’d be worried about noisy pool parties all through summer

Movinghouseatlast · 23/11/2024 10:12

Do swimming pools blood regularly? I've never heard of that. Even domestic pools have an overflow. I went on holiday and it rained day and night for 7 days and our pool didn't flood.

Longhotsummers · 23/11/2024 10:12

Pools don’t flood but it’d be a no from me due to noise and that affecting my enjoyment of my garden during summer.

Lincoln24 · 23/11/2024 10:10

Re the noise, the op hasn't even said if there are kids? Our neighbours have an outdoor pool that is used only by them - two adults.

Chemenger · 23/11/2024 10:08

I don’t see how it can flood, unless the level of next door’s garden is higher.
