When did you lose weight, breastfeeding

Is it a myth?

I'm 8 weeks in and the scales have barely moved. I'm EB.

In fact. I heard some women put on weight BF and I'm starting to think my body is doing just that.

Or am I being impatient/unreasonable as the weight loss comes later?

It makes no difference to the future of my BF journey but I had heard BF melts your pregnancy fat and I'm thinking I'm not one of those women.

I lost weight with my first in the first few weeks or so but he was an absolute guzzler! It soon went back on once I finished 🙈
Didn’t shift any with my second but then she took less, I was older (middle aged spread?) and we were in lockdown so not as active.

WalterdelaMare · 28/12/2024 20:03

I was the exception in that I couldn’t not gain weight when breastfeeding. I got thinner and thinner. 3 weeks pp, I was the lightest I’ve ever been as an adult. But I also did not eat any extra calories as I wasn’t hungry. Most of my friends were the complete opposite.

Purplestarballoon · 28/12/2024 19:59

I still looked pregnant for the first 3 months EBF my first but after 6 months the weight melted off and I was the smallest I’d been as an adult. Piled it back on when I stopped.
Everyone is different just like every baby is different!

Wedonttalkaboutboris · 28/12/2024 19:57

I wish I could remember what it was called but I used to use something online that told you interesting info/tips and benefits each week you were breastfeeding. I remember the 7 (maybe 9?) month+ mark was a ‘fat burning period’ because of the age of your baby and composition of the milk. It’s certainly been true for me both times- I lost loads of weight from this point onwards. I think most people have stopped by this point though or aren’t feeding as much.

I carried around an extra stone during my long winded 4 year breastfeeding slog with my youngest. The stone more or less dropped off when I stopped

buttonousmaximous · 28/12/2024 17:46

It took a good 2/3 but then the weight dropped quickly also helped by the fact I was dairy free for my sons allergies. I lost a good couple of stone.

phoenixrosehere · 28/12/2024 17:43

When I started eating more. My lifestyle is pretty healthy but I wasn’t eating enough calories and my body was holding onto the weight. Once I was, it began coming off.

doodleschnoodle · 28/12/2024 17:36

About two years after I stopped.

elfshenanigans · 28/12/2024 17:36

I didn't. BF made me ravenous. I ate so much. and even put on weight initially. Took a good 18 month to lose all the pregnancy weight. I think it's a bit of a myth that women lose weight whilst BF.

BaronessBomburst · 28/12/2024 17:36

I didn't lose any weight until I stopped, but then it came off easily and I was soon back in all my old clothes. I was 42 as well, so there's always hope!

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 28/12/2024 17:35

When my youngest started sleeping through the night at 5 years old and I stopped eating sugar to keep me going through the tiredness.

Breastfeeding / not breastfeeding made no difference it was the tiredness that was my issue.

WellyBellyBoo · 28/12/2024 17:32

Not much in first 3-4 months, most of it when DD was bigger and consuming more milk between 3-8 months

ChaosHol1 · 28/12/2024 17:30

I never lost weight until I stopped breastfeeding. My mum and sister were both stick thin from it but for some reason it just never did the same for me. As soon as I stopped it dropped off fast.

It worked for me.

But then I'd only put a stone on because of sickness.

Lost two stone very quickly - but I know it doesn't affect everyone the same way. And really, it's not ideal to be lighter and thinner than you were before pregnancy

SoySaucy · 28/12/2024 17:26

Apart from the initial drop of weight immediately after birth, I didn’t lose the rest of the weight until I completely stopped breastfeeding and then a substantial amount dropped off really quickly (a couple of dress sizes almost over night!)
this happened with both my babies!

ChristmasinBrighton · 28/12/2024 17:24

I sat on the sofa EBF and scoffing chocolate. By the time baby was five months old I was smaller than I was before conceiving.

Hankunamatata · 28/12/2024 17:23

Nope I was soooo hungry and thirsty bf. I had to diet it off once I stopped

LeBonBon · 28/12/2024 17:15

I stayed the same the entire 21 months I breastfed DD - literally nothing I did shifted it and I ate and ate at times and didn't put anything on either.

At 19 months PP I started to feel a change in myself, like my hormones were back to pre-pregnancy and I felt myself again. Thought that was my chance to make a diet actually stick, but ended up pregnant again on the exact cycle. Whoops 🙈

Can probably hope to start a proper weight loss journey sometime in 2027...

Mel2023 · 26/11/2024 22:12

I was one of those people who piled the weight on bf. Apparently that’s a thing. 2 years later and I’m still slowly losing the weight. I barely gained a stone during pregnancy but piled on another 3 afterwards during that postpartum period - the bf hunger is a thing! I’d also had a section so was delayed getting back into my usual exercise etc which didn’t help.

NotMeForBakeoff · 26/11/2024 22:10

For me, it changed - with one of them, it was when I stopped feeding.

RabbitsEatPancakes · 21/11/2024 23:49

I weighed less 3 months post partum than pre pregnancy with both of mine.

They both fed constantly, DS hourly, day and night. Dd had dairy/soy allergy so my diet was heavily restricted and the weight just continued to drop off me.

I probably gained some back with both of them from around 9months- when they started sleeping through and I relaxed a bit. Fed both until 18 months.

greyedout · 21/11/2024 23:37

When I stopped.

KohlaParasaurus · 21/11/2024 23:36

Only after I stopped. I was insatiably hungry while I was breastfeeding.

Purplebunnie · 21/11/2024 23:35

First time I lost when I stopped breast feeding. Second time I lost nothing. Might have had something to do with the midwife telling me to have a Mars bar at 11:00am to help with the 11/12 pm feed 😂

Edited for appalling typos

Bangwam1 · 21/11/2024 23:34

I could only lose weight after I stopped. Every time I wouldn’t eat like a king, milk reduced so I gave up trying and once I stopped the weight drastically fell off.
