In general, don’t they?

(I’m not Irish, great grandad was)

@BarbaraHoward ?! Haven’t seen anything of this and not interested in all of that. It’s just an observation I thought for a while and was meant as a simple post, nothing to be read into!!

Speak for yourself, I’ve got loads of personality and character 😄

Baileyscoffeeat1030 · 21/11/2024 23:00

It was supposed to be a positive observation (or so I thought) no malice intended at all. I also think similarly about people of a particular religion, it’s a compliment and something I’ve noticed after years of meeting people and working for people of this religion, but even though its a compliment, I feel too scared to say.

@BarbaraHoward Stirring how? I’m not saying anything negative, it’s supposed to be a compliment. I have travelled a lot and lived in many different countries, been to Ireland a few times and my dads side of the family is from Ireland from generations back. Nearly all I have met and from all the family stories I have heard, they have character.

There's been a few threads about Ireland, it's stance on Israel, moderation of anti Irish slurs over the past few days.

Given the anti-OP bias on MN it's hard to read the OP as anything other than an invitation to slag Irish people off. Hopefully I'm wrong but I'm very very tired.

ZaZathecat · 21/11/2024 22:58

No they talk the same shite as the rest of us, just with a nicer accent

Baileyscoffeeat1030 · 21/11/2024 22:56

@miniaturepixieonacid There could be an element of that too, i’d say the same about many Canadians I’ve met too, but the Irish people I’ve met just have a different way about them 🤷🏻‍♀️

And if you made a sweeping statement about the individual qualities of people from another country or culture based only on the fact of where they were from and it was a negative statement, that would be called, oh remind me, racist. No?

Not wrong though.

Do you think cultures shape people, or are they all the same?

If they are different, is it OK to mention it? If not why not?

SmalllChange · 21/11/2024 22:55

Baileyscoffeeat1030 · 21/11/2024 22:36

Not sure how to explain it…they’re a bit different, quirky often, funny, interesting…

You probably don't mean to sound patronising, but we're not all bloody leprechauns 🤦‍♀️

Unreasonable and massively xenophobic. Stereotyping people based on their nationality (even when you attribute them “positive” traits) is really offensive.

Do you also think Scots are careful with money, but inclined to violence? That the Welsh are lovely singers with a penchant for sheep?

Stop inventing backstories for literally millions of people who you’ve never met.

miniaturepixieonacid · 21/11/2024 22:51

The Irish people I know do fit this description. But then so do the Australians, Americans, South Africans and Canadians I know (sticking to English speaking countries to rule out language barriers). They're all in England. I wonder if it's actually more that people who emigrate (from wherever) have more personality and character than the average - an adventurous spirit, go getting attitude, something like that?

BarbaraHoward · 21/11/2024 22:50

Honestly after some of the threads I've been on over the past few days it's hard to see this thread as anything other than stirring.

ImAnAutum · 21/11/2024 22:48

I do think.most people do have general ideas of people from certain countries, even if they don't admit it. Americans = stupid. Canadians = lovely Australian = laid back Irish =great craic England = boring Scottish = probably also great craic. This is just what I've picked up from meeting people/travel/tv/comedians etc. Doesn't mean it's true but it is true that people do make generalisations about people/places. I happen to think there are great people and not so great people everywhere. But totally bias to the Irish 🐍🇨🇮

TPJB · 21/11/2024 22:48

What an annoying goady post.

TheErinyes · 21/11/2024 22:48

HobnobsChoice · 21/11/2024 22:45

Every single person in Ireland is a great craic. All 7 million. Those ones who set fire to a hotel housing asylum seekers are a great bunch of lads
😶

Indeed. Or maybe the OP thinks they were being great craic as they did so.

Zanatdy · 21/11/2024 22:47

is this observation from I’m a celeb? As they are two quite big personalities, so YABU, massive generalisation

Thepeopleversuswork · 21/11/2024 22:46

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 21/11/2024 22:43

What a bizarre thing to say about a whole country. You're basically fetishising them.

Completely. And if she had said they were all ignorant she would rightly have been jumped on for being a bigot.

Complete lack of critical thinking ability.

I agree OP…

Some cultures have overtime passed down things. It’s not racist to say that. I feel like a lot of Irish people have inherited humour.

It might be something to do with generational struggle. Like using humour to get through difficult times. Similarly Jewish people (specifically from New York) are often hilarious!

There are cultures that are generally generous, or welcoming etc. Surely there’s nothing wrong with saying that?

TheErinyes · 21/11/2024 22:43

There are about seven million of us on the island of Ireland, to say nothing of the diaspora — I can assure you we don’t all have some kind of Blarneying Charm Borg hive mind.

Breadcat24 · 21/11/2024 22:42

OP you are going to break your heart if you ever watch The Banshees of Inisherin

Deadringer · 21/11/2024 22:41

I am irish and I am a boring shite. Yabu
