@Rumors1 agree, banter is love!

Rumors1 · 22/11/2024 08:50

I am Irish and the one thing I can say quite definitively about Irish people is that we love to take the pi*s out of each other. Slagging each other off is a sign of affection and we use it in most situations, even where you wouldnt think it would be appropriate. I notice we use a lot of black humor also.
I believe most Irish people feel the need to make the other person laugh in a conversation, and that probably makes us appear like we are all great fun.

Honestly, in terms of population size, they really do produce a lot of literary greats, you cannot take that away from them lol

Well I can because most were Anglo-Irish, ie English ethnics. And Ireland's scientific achievements were mostly made by Scots, some English. Scotland has the same population size and has always punched above its weight intellectually yet abroad Scots are better known for twee shite like tartan blankets. Perceptions are not everything, they are rarely all that accurate.

Irish: these important Irish literary figures were grappling with social issues of the time, here is some of the important places they lived and some of the circles they moved within, and important trends that informed their writing.

You: they were all mostly English anyway, Ireland had no significant literary tradition and any Irish person who has any pride in any of this is misguided and talking bollocks.

….. yeah ok

I think you have a very underinformed view of Irish literature.

TinySmol · 22/11/2024 07:54

I know plenty Irish people who are dry shites. Mostly men, mind you.

RaiseTheBar · 22/11/2024 07:54

Janedoe82 · 21/11/2024 23:54

The thing about stereotypes is that they don’t form for no reason! The Irish generally are funny!! Obviously not all but many are.

"The Irish are generally funny"

That's ridiculously reductive.

"The thing about stereotypes is that they don't form for no reason"

Within living memory, there was an insulting stereotype that the Irish were stupid - do you think that also formed because it was generally true.

Stereotypes of an entire country and its diaspora form due to a lack of critical thinking and xenophobia. Just because the stereotype is seen as positive or complimentary, doesn't make it any more reasonable.

Let’s stop ignoring or getting offended by the differences between various cultures and start celebrating it

Agree with not being stiff. We do like the craic and can talk for days (often shite, as you are about to witness).

All nationalities have their good and bad points (generally speaking of course as no nationality is one monolithic group). So with that being said,

My favourite nationality are Scots. They just see through bullshit better than anyone else imo (no nonsense, think that's why they make great football managers).

The English to me always feel like the grown ups in the room. Sensible people, very grounded and seem to have more common sense than the rest of us. They are the nationality I'd nominate to represent us if aliens visit us.

Welsh, always seem to have big booming voices. Cannot think of a softly spoken Welsh person. It's the valleys doing I think. They also produced my favourite boxer Joe Calzaghe who is the classiest fighter I've ever seen.

Germans don't have much of a sense of humour but they are very efficient (best cars)

If you want honesty and directness ask a Dutch person

Canadians are very polite

Americans (two versions for this one), the people in the coasts, sensible folk, those in between, we are hiding them if aliens visit us as we'd get exploited as a species otherwise.

Aussies are everyone's mate and I love how they often use nicknames.

Kiwis, like the English very sensible, and without question they have the best (beest) accent (the standard English accent a close second..would much prefer to pronounce car "Ca" instead of "Key-arr" as I say it).

Japanese, very orderly, and focused. Their mind isn't full of emotions which leaves plenty of room for thinking straight which results in them making us all great video games.

Scandinavians, all similarly cool as a cucumber to match their enviroment. Just completely unflustered folk.

French, passionate, full of flair, and I admire their love of the French language as they seem to be the one nationality that refuses to submit to English as the dominant language (indicative of this is Zidane who flat out refuses to speak a word of English in interviews despite knowing full well what the words mean)

Italians, even more passionate, and they seem to excell at everything. Food, fashion, cars, sport, art, architecture... immense.

I love this post. Yes sure it’s a generalisation. And yes sure this won’t be the case for everyone from each nationality but it feels like a celebration of the idiosyncrasies of each culture!

FWIW OP I don’t think you’re being racist. I have Irish family and they all really are largely as you describe. Also very poetic and artistic and have courage in their convictions.

Mercurial123 · 22/11/2024 07:49

Really weird post. I have Irish friends and family. Some people are the nicest kindest people you can meet and can tell a good story. I know others who are stubborn, angry, racist, rude, and know how to hold a grudge. Thankfully, the people I'm closest too come in the first category.

x2boys · 22/11/2024 07:46

Based anecdotally on my own family who emigrated from Skibereen to Manchester in the 1950,s yea they are great
In reality it's a massive generalisations, dome are fab some not so much like anywhere really.

BitOutOfPractice · 22/11/2024 07:31

I don’t quite know how the Irish have managed it, but they seem to have great PR. Don’t get me wrong I love Ireland, have lots of Irish family, the Irish people I’ve met have all been perfectly nice. But their overall image is more than that isn’t it? Great PR. Because logic tells us that there are just as many bores and arseholes in every country. Yet nobody believes that of the Irish. They seem to be universally loved. I’d love to know how they’ve done it!

Mixture of culture, culture of emigration and being a well known but minor and neutral player on the world stage.

Anyotherdude · 22/11/2024 07:45

Have you never seen an Irish politician in action, OP?

PoupeeGonflable · 22/11/2024 07:44

Baileyscoffeeat1030 · 21/11/2024 22:54

@BarbaraHoward Stirring how? I’m not saying anything negative, it’s supposed to be a compliment. I have travelled a lot and lived in many different countries, been to Ireland a few times and my dads side of the family is from Ireland from generations back. Nearly all I have met and from all the family stories I have heard, they have character.

Email the Irish Tourist Board and let them know, as it's not working here!

PoupeeGonflable · 22/11/2024 07:42

Deadringer · 21/11/2024 22:41

I am irish and I am a boring shite. Yabu

😂😂
Thank you!

QueSyrahSyrah · 22/11/2024 07:41

Agree with above posters. I've met / worked with a good number of Irish people over the years. Some have indeed been lovely and charming, some have been entirely unremarkable, some have been absolute arseholes, some make being Irish their whole personality.

Much like any other nationality I've ever met a number of really.

PoupeeGonflable · 22/11/2024 07:41

Baileyscoffeeat1030 · 21/11/2024 22:34

@NotSayingImBatman Agree, Geordies are great (I’m a Mancunian)

But almost all the Irish Ive met (a lot) have real character, there’s something about them.
I live abroad and most people seem to dislike the Brits..sadly, but they always speak very highly of Irish people.

Define character

PoupeeGonflable · 22/11/2024 07:40

Baileyscoffeeat1030 · 21/11/2024 22:29

@Wherethewildthingsfart Than some other people…

You seem to be digging yourself into a hole here.
You might want to stop because you've made a sweeping generalisation which you cannot back up, so are floundering

Crazycatlady79 · 22/11/2024 07:37

SmalllChange · 21/11/2024 22:55

You probably don't mean to sound patronising, but we're not all bloody leprechauns 🤦‍♀️

I was about to post similar to this: OP is describing the caricature of a Leprechaun.

They say they are well travelled, then come out with this reductive, facile, patronising shite.

BitOutOfPractice · 22/11/2024 07:31

WillowTit · 22/11/2024 07:25

a good craic

must be in the genes

Bushmillsbabe · 22/11/2024 07:22

Married to an Irish man - I think they often place a greater importance on family gatherings and generally being sociable. Many parts of Ireland are still very rural tight knit communities where everyone knows everyone.
I dint think they are born more funny or more interesting, but that they grow up expected to talk to a wide variety of people, and through that they learn greater social skills. Thats a massive generalisation though, and will vary area to area. My girls see a wide variety of people through us being quite social with lots of friends with variety of ages of children and are very adaptable. But I meet other young children who struggle to make eye contact and speak to anyone outside their immediate circle.
From going to several weddings in Ireland with my husbands family I do see a huge contrast. Every one we have been to there has had a minimum of 300 people, and gone on until 4-5am the next day. Every wedding I have been to in the UK is around 100 people or less and most people are in bed by 1am

Creepybookworm · 22/11/2024 06:41

My grandparents were Irish. They had a lot of personality.......arserholey personality mainly!

Yes, just like many English writers and storytellers, and American, French, German, Nigerian, Indian, Jewish, Welsh, Latin American, Japanese, Russian, Czech, Austrian, and Canadian writers and storytellers (continued on page 96...)

Honestly, in terms of population size, they really do produce a lot of literary greats, you cannot take that away from them lol
