gives you the ick?

It seems very popular on Mumsnet. Do you stay in the ones you slept in or shower and put on fresh ones?

Depends on individual circumstances. My mum and FIL ran a grocers/off licence in a very busy area, open 364 days per year. Xmas day was their chill and do nothing eat rubbish (buffet bits), watch TV and wear comfies day. No visitors. Different for people that have a dinner/expect visitors.

Christmas is a time to get dressed up to the nines and use all the very best plates, cutlery and glassware.

Pyjamas are only for sleeping ✅

Perish the thought of getting all dressed up

People that wear pajamas round the home are all just shy or nascent diaper fetishists. Suspect behaviour imo

I’d better let my parents and in-laws know!🤣

I have had a couple Christmases in jammies all day and come the afternoon, I felt icky. But I also couldn't see the point in getting ready and changing if we weren't going anywhere. That's why I used to love getting dressed up to go out for Christmas dinner.

I dressed up a few times being in my own home and it felt a bit wasted 😕 especially when it seems like no one else makes the effort!
This year we're at home as a family again so be nice to find something in between comfort and occasion. Like a previous poster, I'm not sure I want to sit around in sequins when I have a 4yr old & spending a lot of time sat on the floor haha

Hoping to restart some traditions even going for a walk so we have a bit more reason to get ready. I found it pretty stuffy being in all day last year.

Dude. 🙃

Terminally offended people give me more ick than 3 days in a row pj's could ever do. 😁

I think it's the noise a cat makes when it's about to throw up.

It's not. It's from icky aka gross or disgusting.

Just as a matter of interest, where does the awful term "ick" come from?

Never heard it anywhere apart from MN>

Needmorelego · 22/11/2024 12:31

@nightmarepickle2025 why? I love my flat.....all my stuff is there 😂
If I want fresh air I can open the door to the Juliet balcony.

Needmorelego · 22/11/2024 12:29

@Parker231 although will there be Christmas chocolate......get the dark 😁

nightmarepickle2025 · 22/11/2024 12:16

I'd hate to spend a whole day without getting dressed and leaving the house for a walk, would make me depressed.

RabbitsRock · 22/11/2024 12:12

I never wear pjs & only bought some when I was going into hospital.

TheMauveBeaker · 22/11/2024 12:11

Absolutely not. On any day of the year.

Rhaenys · 22/11/2024 11:02

I would love to do this but I would be too embarrassed.

Parker231 · 22/11/2024 10:58

Needmorelego · 22/11/2024 10:55

@Parker231 the darker ones will be better - any accidental gravy drips won't show up 🙂

Thankfully no cooking involved. No one particularly likes the traditional turkey dinner so we have a cold buffet.

brunettemic · 22/11/2024 10:46

I’m fine with it. There’s context to it for people. We do Christmas Day just me, DH and 2 x DC. What’s the point in getting all dressed up and prissy for no reason? We treat it as a relaxed family day of fun and being together. I don’t need to get dressed up for that.

Parker231 · 22/11/2024 10:39

My dilemma is which pj’s to buy for this Christmas? The theme is wildlife. I’m in the UK for a few days so can shop here but otherwise will need to go shopping when I get home next week.

@Wonderi

It's hardly fake and forced to be well-groomed and festively attired. We've always done this on Christmas Day.

I am 61 and have family photos from when I was a toddler in a red velvet dress, shiny black shoes, with my mother in a cream silk blouse & pearls, skirt and sheer hose. Dad in a suit. I can't remember a Christmas we didn't dress well. Easter as well.

It's not a class thing. My dad was a factory worker & my mum a secretary.

I'm always dressed on Christmas day for the first part of the day at least. But I don't make any extra effort just because of the fact it's Christmas. I'm not going to be wearing a dress and heels when I'm at home with my husband and kids. I would get more dressed up if I was going out on Christmas day. Otherwise I don't see the point. But everyone just does things differently and there's no right or wrong way. People have their own traditions and to do anything else would feel weird.

GiddyRobin · 22/11/2024 09:27

batt3nb3rg · 21/11/2024 23:01

For me, it's got nothing to do with not bothering to get dressed - getting dressed, in my mind, exists entirely for leaving the house. I remove my clothes and put on a nightdress (admittedly I have some exquisite nightdresses due to wearing them for much of every day, I would say I spent more on each of my nightdresses on average than my outdoor clothes) immediately after returning home, and I receive family visitors in my nightdress and Call the Midwife-esque bed jacket. I actually feel disgusting sitting on my furniture in the same clothes I wear outside, sitting on the bus/tube, brushing up against other people. So there is no reason why I'd do anything else for Christmas day, unless I was with people who aren't my close family or my husband's - luckily my in-laws are very used to my nightdress lifestyle by now 😂

I love a good nightie. I've got some Victorian ones - I lounge around like one of Poe's consumptive maidens and feel fabulous!

Shower and fresh ones after a nice walk by the sea!

That sounds like heaven!

Pyjamas don't say "celebration" or "festive" do they. Literally the opposite of making an effort.
They also suggest you may have the heating up too high...

Totally agree on the heating.

To be warm enough wearing only thin clothes like PJs would require a much warmer house than mine.

You’d have to be quite privileged!
