To find a lost wallet and keep the money inside

FindersKeepers1 · 20/11/2024 13:08

Today I found a wallet on the floor in ASDA. A decent leather, heavy wallet with credit cards inside etc. I quickly handed it into a security guard who then handed it into customer services. Told DH and he asked if I kept the money inside? He was half joking but said that he would keep the cash as a “finders fee” and that it served the boomer right for dropping their wallet (it was a wallet of an older man)

Tried to talk to him, would he really keep the money he found and he would! Although he then accused me of starting a fight.

He sounds vile, he reminds me a bit of my ex.

I found someone's phone once and the bloke brought me flowers & chocolates when I met him to return it! There are nicer humans, pity you're not married to one.

Also admitted to pinching stuff at the self service tills in Tesco - scans most stuff but sneaks some stuff through. Came home a couple of years ago showing me a new wallet that he didn’t scan, was so pleased with himself. We had a huge fight and he made a big deal of coming home with groceries saying how don’t worry, everything has been scanned and paid for. Urgh.

I'd have been fuming and go back with him and he tell them he forgot to scan it and if he didn't I would. What a poor model for you DC a thief as a Dad.

My DS found a wallet in Asda many years ago and it was stuffed full of £180 cash. He handed it in and was told to leave his name and address. A couple of weeks later he got a thank you card with a voucher in it. A Mum had been given the money by her parents to buy herself and her kids Xmas gifts and lost it in the shop but didn't realise she had dropped it. Keeping it would be stealing in my book.

Feelingathomenow · 20/11/2024 15:24

I’m sorry you are married to a bigoted thief. Does he also think it’s ok to steal from people based on their sex, or race?

Hes a bullying tosser

Trickedbyadoughnut · 20/11/2024 15:23

Oh, I remember your other thread.

I am really glad you have a plan to leave him. He is a nasty piece of work.

housethatbuiltme · 20/11/2024 15:22

Boomers?

As in the 2 generations that shared across the baby boom era?

The youngest being in their 60s and the oldest almost 80, so even youngest around retirement age?

Ah yes, serves those damn entitled pensions right for wanting food from a supermarket. They should stay at home, out of sight out of mind and have mush delivered through meals on wheels only obviously.

GivingitToGod · 20/11/2024 15:22

OP, I suggest that u put this matter to bed in your mind. Otherwise, your marriage is at risk. Not sure what your marriage is loke in general

Daisybuttercup12345 · 20/11/2024 15:04

So you are married to a despicable thief and therefore guilty by association when he brings stolen stuff home from work.
His attitude towards the older man and his wallet is disgusting.
How can you be with this dishonest idiot?
I hope he hasn't taught any offspring he has to share his low morals.

He has, their son. Fagin and the Artful Dodger come to mind.

Does he sing ‘got to pick a pocket or two’ when he’s out?

That is stealing. Full stop.

Ditto

I voted YABU to consider keeping money from a wallet but judging by the massive 90% that think this would be fine I think I've finally lost my faith in human nature.

I voted yanbu as in yanbu to go against your piece of shit husband and hand it in. Could you not tell by the comments that is what people are saying?

chollysawcutt · 20/11/2024 15:16

I find it interesting when people hate on the thing they are literally going to become.

Good health willing, your DH will be 'boomer' age one day. I wonder how he will feel about young people despising him for the very thing we hope for. A long and healthy life.

Blogswife · 20/11/2024 15:16

Most thieves find a way of justifying it to themselves
Let’s hope you manage to leave before the police catch up with him . It might be hard for you to explain to them that you have been aware of his criminal activity for years but did nothing about it

5128gap · 20/11/2024 15:14

Your H thinks it's fine to steal money from a person just because they're elderly? Perhaps he could make a few extra quid pretending to clear their guttering or posing as the meter reader and going through their drawers?

I worked in a supermarket once and if you don't take he cash out yourself the staff probably will. I remember being shocked when the supervisor did that but then it happened again and a different supervisor did exactly the same 🤷‍♀️

If I found a wallet containing cash I’d take it to the local police station. I’d leave a note with the staff to say I’d found an item of personal property and if somebody comes looking for it, to direct them there. I wouldn’t trust the staff not to steal it. And I wouldn’t take it home and post about it on Facebook or whatever either. I saw so many daft posts on Nextdoor along the lines of ‘I found this wallet in Sainsbury’s this afternoon. If it’s yours DM me’ complete with a bloody photo!

If this is your takeaway... you haven't read the posts properly.
I haven't voted though, as not sure which way is BU.

Msmoonpie · 20/11/2024 15:09

I remember you posting about him
before. It was a horrible thing to do with the air pods too.

I imagine he has other qualities that make him Unpleasant but without knowing him can’t guess what they are.

It doesn’t sound like he respects you much either.

Hulahoopalaver · 20/11/2024 15:08

Yalta · 20/11/2024 15:02

Just to say your mother is definitely a Baby Boomer. It’s just easier for people to cast everyone of a certain age in a certain light and blame them for all that is wrong with their lives

People like your mother who don’t conform to their vision of what a Boomer is just messes with their heads

From what I have seen, if you are going to steal then steal millions. At least make it worthwhile

Those like your husband who are proud because they have stolen some Bic biros and a few post it notes sound pathetic and usually get caught

Think you meant @LolleePop there @Yalta . I didn't mention my mum 😂.

I found a purse last week, left on a stall at Comic Con so I immediately handed it to the stall holder, didn't cross my mind to pick it up and take it. I also found a credit card in my road the week before. We tried to reunite it with it's owner via Next door and Fb. No luck. It's a company i hadn't heard of but I googled their number to report it but couldn't get through. I'm sure the owner will have cancelled it by now so I'll just cut it up. It's safer. I've found wallets before. A man on holiday once got up from his seat on a water boat and his wallet was on the seat. I alerted him. Most normal people have empathy. I know how horrible the feeling is that you get when you think you have lost your purse. The relief to have it returning is immense. Taking money, cards etc could ruin someone's entire week, Christmas or holiday, worse they may not have enough money left to eat etc.

Beeinalily · 20/11/2024 15:07

The air pod thing sounds familiar, this isn't the arsehole who liked mowing over frogs, is it? If so I have news for him, here's one boomer who would like to flatten him in the same way.

viques · 20/11/2024 15:07

FindersKeepers1 · 20/11/2024 13:50

Not good I know. Worst thing is he makes out that I’m pathetic for doing the right thing. Believes that everyone is out for themselves and that if he doesn’t take something someone else will. Same goes for his attitude towards boomers that everything was handed to them on a plate and it serves them right if they have stuff taken off them now such as the winter fuel allowance (another issue I know) and served the man right if he had the money taken from his wallet cos he’s a Boomer.

He does know, doesn’t he, that some boomers still have their winter fuel allowance because they are on their arse ends and have so little money they have to have their basic pension supplemented by pension credit otherwise they would starve to death of cold or malnutrition?

Lets hope he doesn’t lose his wallet and have its contents taken by someone who thinks they are entitled to his money because he works so can afford to lose a few quid to someone who doesn’t. If he thinks there is a hierarchy of need and entitlement he will soon find out that someone else thinks he is fair game.

@hamsandyams Apolgies - I misread your original post. I did think it was an odd thing to do.
