To find a lost wallet and keep the money inside

Today I found a wallet on the floor in ASDA. A decent leather, heavy wallet with credit cards inside etc. I quickly handed it into a security guard who then handed it into customer services. Told DH and he asked if I kept the money inside? He was half joking but said that he would keep the cash as a “finders fee” and that it served the boomer right for dropping their wallet (it was a wallet of an older man)

Tried to talk to him, would he really keep the money he found and he would! Although he then accused me of starting a fight.

Ick

dump him OP

Your husband sounds vile OP, and now it's rubbing off on your kid.

No, a decent person doesn’t steal.

I found a wallet with at least a grand in notes folded up inside it, sat on a wall of a car park for a DIY shop. I presume the owner plonked it down whilst loading their car boot?

I took it straight to the store’s customer services desk and told them where I’d found it. The lady I gave it to has worked there for years and I’ve no reason to assume she would be dishonest. I didn’t leave my details as I didn’t want a reward just for doing the right thing. I’m sure the owner would have realised at some point and retraced their steps.

Where I live, I often read posts on the town’s local Facebook page from people losing stuff and it’s virtually always returned to them in tact within a day or so. I guess if I lived in a city, that would be less likely to happen. 😢

A dishonest man with no morals is hardly a catch. I couldn't stay with someone who had that attitude.

LunaCoyote · 20/11/2024 13:38

I lost my wallet once, I was absolutely distraught. A lovely man brought it to my house (I had my address in it!) and hadn’t taken a penny. I had my cash for the month in it, about £200.

The relief and sheer gratitude … I think I actually cried a bit. I tried to offer him £20 as a reward and he refused.

I would never, ever take money from a lost wallet because I know that horrible panic and the overwhelming relief when you find it intact.

BobbyBiscuits · 20/11/2024 13:38

I wouldn't expect cash back if I lost my wallet. Not many people even carry cash. It's much more important to take the cards out of circulation to stop fraud and let the owner know it's been found. If it was hundreds of pounds I think I'd wait and hope they gave me some of it when I returned it. If it was twenty quid or something I probably would just pocket it but still help the person her the wallet back. Only because I'm really broke. And I would accept that I would not get cash returned to me.

I knew someone who kept the extra samples sent from a firm and ended up being jailed for theft! Be very careful what he does as there is CCTV EVERYWHERE!

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 20/11/2024 13:37

I understand why he would be tempted but no I wouldn't.

Quite simply because I wouldn't want someone to do it to me.

Essentially has the attitude that everyone is out for themselves and if he hadn’t kept the air pods/pinched money from a found wallet-someone else would do it.

He's wrong. Decent people don't steal. He may judge everyone by his own standards, doesn't mean he's correct, suggests he probably keeps company with people who ate as scuzzy as himself.

Apolloneuro · 20/11/2024 13:36

Your husband is vile. Tell him from me.

Tittat50 · 20/11/2024 13:36

I'm guessing there are issues with empathy in other areas of his life? I have a relative who is very non feeling and I had to go NC for my own wellbeing. They'd have an attitude like this - not caring that could be the poor man's last few quid.

The other stuff is almost like thrill seeking - trying to get stuff without scanning properly for example.

I'd be a bit bothered by the wider context regards the person he is. I believe there will be much more than this example.

Just saw your update. Your own son calling you a narcissist is weird. I'd be careful he doesn't become a little minion to your husband and they gang up on you with manipulative tactics. There's a huge risk with your husband being the sort I think he may be.

I found a wallet in the snow yesterday, it must have been dropped and then covered when it started snowing.

I opened it only to find the name and address on the drivers license, but there was cash and numerous cards in there too.

I’ve got less than £20 to last me until I get paid at the end of next week and the address listed was in a really nice part of town, big houses and fancy cars, so guess what I did?

I got in my car and dropped the wallet and all of its contents off at the address listed. Like any decent human would do.

purplecorkheart · 20/11/2024 13:36

I kept reading down hoping you would say that you do not have children with this man. Sadly you do. Why are you with him? What good does he bring to your life. He sounds like utter scum.

MrsClatterbuck · 20/11/2024 13:35

My husband found a purse in a car park recently. Contained cards plus a large amount of cash. He was able to reunite it with the owner who was very thankful.

They insisted he take something which he tried not to take but they were very insistent. It was the right thing to do and by the way he would have been called a boomer by your husband and the prison who lost their purse was probably early forties. Also the gentleman when he got his wallet back would have known what cash was in it and you could have found yourself under investigation for the missing money.

HarrietHedgehog · 20/11/2024 13:35

Tell him sooner or later he’s going to get caught. Shops are rapidly improving their video surveillance.

WildCats24 · 20/11/2024 13:35

This gives me The Ick.

Onlyvisiting · 20/11/2024 13:35

How disgusting. That is totally without morals and vile.
IF eg you found cash dropped in the street with no identifying features with it then I could maybe see why you'd keep it. In a shop? When it is obvious who it belongs to? That is barely any better than just pick pocketing it from their person. It's blatant theft.

Do you have children with this man?

He’s the one I posted about where he encouraged our son to keep some air pods that our son found. Made out that I was a huge doormat, a nerd and pathetic for wanting to hand them in and return them to their owner. My teen called me a narcissist and vicious too, I told my husband that his behaviour is ruining our son but he’s used that as a weapon too - how I said he’s going to ruin our son with his terrible morals etc.

Pretty pathetic weapon. What you said was the truth.

Does he not realise that there will come a time when he is an older man? being called whatever unpleasant epithet people like him are using in 30 or 40 years time?

Hoppinggreen · 20/11/2024 13:33

Your husband seems to be an unpleasant thief

MadCatandBirdLady · 20/11/2024 13:33

bifurCAT · 20/11/2024 13:28

Definitely would feel uncomfortable with this, but a part of me realises that security will probably take it if you dont!

Me personally, I'd have tried to find the person on LinkedIn or FB and tried to get it back to them personally

Best to hand it in as if it belonged to an elderly person theyaren’t going to be on Linkedin or Facebook. Plus if you leave the store with it you’re on camera as having stolen it.

YeahWellWhyNot · 20/11/2024 13:33

Someone did this to me at Butlins, I was very upset as it was DS pocket money to spend in the arcades. Also had to cancel all my cards just in case because clearly some arse had been through it.

You have bigger problems than a hypothetical lost wallet, OP. Why do you keep posting about him if you're never actually going to change your situation?

At a certain point, you're as complicit in your childs' upbringing as your husband. You're choosing not to make changes. Changes that would demonstrate to your child that people don't need to tolerate such poor behaviours.

Sampler · 20/11/2024 13:33

Does he steal from your handbag too ?

TheDogBartholomew · 20/11/2024 13:33

FindersKeepers1 · 20/11/2024 13:14

I asked him again - would he actually steal the contents of the wallet and he basically said not if the person was standing right next to him!

So he is a coward as well as an arsehole?
