Could dragons really exist?

I am friends with someone of viking descent, and she told me that her ancestors were friends with dragons, just like How To Train Your Dragon! I find that really cool that dragons might not be that imaginary.

It is very interesting that so many cultures have stories and artwork that features dragons.

I think it IS interesting! Because if I had to invent a slightly scary animal, I wouldn't have come up with a dragon. But it's quite a universal theme.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/11/2024 11:41

Dragons are mentioned in the bible but dinosaurs are not.
So that would bunk that theory.

Check your logic there... if the people thought dinosaur bones were from an animal they called a 'dragon', then of course they'd mention 'dragon' and have no need to also have a word for 'dinosaur'.

I’ve always thought that. Because there wasn’t internet to share ideas … 🐉 🤔

Based on Stargate theory you certainly did 😁

This is an excellent point...

What? I've never seen aliens carved in ancient buildings etc.

Based on Stargate theory you certainly did 😁

I wish they did as I’d like a smallish one as a pet. It could sit on my shoulder and stare menacingly at annoying people on teams calls. And possibly make me toast using its fire breath.

… and toasted marshmallows.

I’ll believe it when I see a dragon fossil skeleton. I assume people may mean pterodactyls. They existed, definitely. Maybe they were in cave paintings and stories handed down and somehow morphed into dragons that we think of today? I doubt they breathed fire (definitely not, actually), but probably a case of exaggeration over many generations, thousands of years.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 19/11/2024 07:53

I suspect the dragon concept came from dinosaur fossils.

Dragons are mentioned in the bible but dinosaurs are not.
So that would bunk that theory.

Considering all our birds are related back to dinosaurs, it is very possible that dragons did exist, probably not fire breathing but definely big flying animals of course it is possible

You have, you just didn't realise it.
In many cultures there are strangely similar figures and objects in their ancient art

SensibleSigma · 19/11/2024 11:03

It’s the limb issue that scuppers the idea for me.

You need four legs and two wings- six limbs- to call it a dragon. Otherwise it’s just a lizard of great size a dinosaur, pterosaur, bat or bird.

SharpOpalNewt · 19/11/2024 11:01

It's probably a mixture of people discovering dinosaur bones at various times, crocodiles, monitor lizards and small and big lizards - iguanas and so on being still in existence, plus big birds and large sea creatures - whales, narwhal etc.

Nikitaspearlearring · 19/11/2024 10:59

There are dragons in lots of cultures, but they don't all fly and breathe fire. The Viking thing - have you read Beowulf? Grendel could be described as a dragon. In old English myths and legends they were 'worms'. I think there's always a germ of truth in these legends but they get embellished over the years.
In Venice in St Mark's cathedral they have loads of different animals in the mosaics including a dragon, the only mythical beast. I am happy to believe that dragons of some kind used to exist. Ditto unicorns, but just as beautiful horse-like creatures rather than having magical healing powers etc.

Why are people suggesting they might have existed? We've known they didn't/don't exist since the 18th century! Next people will be saying maybe mermaids exist or fairies.

But they do, don't they?

Hoppinggreen · 19/11/2024 10:56

GinnyPiggie · 19/11/2024 10:55

I often think it's surprising how dragons are a motif in all sorts of ancient cultures. It's quite specific!

No, I suspect not co-existing with humans, but maybe they are some sort of ancestral memory from the past?!

So are aliens

LordEmsworth · 19/11/2024 10:52

Ah yes of course. Kind of her "Viking ancestors" to pass the message on to her through the millennia, there's not that many records pre-Conquest so the fact she's able to trace her ancestry is very impressive. She is definitely a reliable source 😂

LostTheMarble · 19/11/2024 10:50

Obviously the Welsh dragon is real. It lives in the Wyddfa, binding its time 😉.

As for the idea of dragons, it’s highly likely that humans came across fossils of dinosaurs (pterodactyls in particular), and as people do, let imagination run wild from the truth.

Gimmeabreak2025 · 19/11/2024 10:45

Tina159 · 19/11/2024 08:23

The friend wasn't there either. There is absolutely no evidence of dragons, dinosaurs went extinct 65 million years ago and there is evidence of them. People believed mermaids existed at one time do you believe in them too? Do you just believe anything anyone says?

People should question everything and not just blindly believe a load of nonsense.

Exactly!! That’s why I would never say something us 100% fact…. Like saying dragons absolutely didn’t exist. You’re the one not questioning things!!

Singleandproud · 19/11/2024 09:59

I imagine 'fire breathing dragons' were actually people living in caves with fires at the mouth.

Obviously large lizards exist.

Possibly large lizards existed where people lived in caves with fires at the mouth.

More likely they were just a cautionary tale to stop people fucking around where they weren't supposed to be. - Probably near the tribes that lived in caves with fires at the mouth.

caramac04 · 19/11/2024 09:53

Part of me thinks dragons would be fabulous to have around now - but - I can’t see how they would breathe fire, to fly I would think their bones would need to be hollow.
What size of dragons are we thinking? Domesticated? If not they would be a terrifying enemy!
Much as I love the idea of dragons I think they’re mythical because there is no scientific evidence to back up their existence.

Londonrach1 · 19/11/2024 09:12

Possible. About two years ago I saw a fairy in the garden when I was with my daughter.and another adult who all saw it too. I know everyone will say trick of light etc but it smiled and waved at us. Not seen it again but I know what we saw. Lot of things have probably existed but there's no evidence left. So answer to your question possible....

ChocolateTelephone · 19/11/2024 09:07

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 19/11/2024 08:53

The flying capacity is a red herring ( 😜) though. Many cultures’ dragons do not ‘fly’ . Most of the similar creatures in manuscripts and early paintings in the West are depicted as crawling or creeping on fairly short stumpy legs. The aerial exploits have become much more prevalent with the advent of modern photographic ( manipulated) media. The wings seemed to have been borrowed from the griffin, which is an earlier and metaphorical creature.

Lots of Saints were supposed to have battled and overcome dragons, Saint George is just the one we happen to have hung onto in the West. Saint Liphard is a very local saint to a small town on the Loire , who was supposed to have defeated a local dragon, who lived in the marshy banks of the river. For those of a sceptical mind, this symbolises both the triumph of religion over superstition and paganism, and the possibility of more hygienic practices and living conditions being introduced by the Saint.

But….in Murano, the glassmaking island in the Venetian Lagoon, the local saint, Donatus, did not just vanquish a dragon, he hung its bones above the altar of the main church. They were there in the 1990’s , although the Catholic modernisers had removed all but three ribs by 2009. I went to see it several times, you could get quite close. I thought it was most probably a large crocodile, although the skull seemed more arched ( I’m not a reptile expert).

Make of that what you will.

Surely Saint Lizard?
