I am friends with someone of viking descent, and she told me that her ancestors were friends with dragons, just like How To Train Your Dragon! I find that really cool that dragons might not be that imaginary.

@BeCyanSloth Thats exactly the type of dragon I want! Should there be two hatchlings next year, I’d be more than happy to take one off your hands. Obviously subject to home inspection, can’t be rehoming dragons to just anyone.

Don't you know that Dragon Rescues are run by Dragon hoarding weirdos whose only goal in life is to prevent perfect homes from getting a dragon?
Thats why people buy them from t'internet or "rescue" from abroad.

Bones.

You mean fossils?

I always wonder why people think a kid would get a day off school and immediately fire up Mumsnet to troll middle aged women. As if!

Who cares? This is a GREAT question if you are 6 or 60.

Because it’s a more likely scenario than an adult of either sex spouting some of the nonsense on here?

See also the current thread where someone who claims to be a 31 year old man is refusing to put down his wife’s name as next of kin on forms for a new job, because once, when he was 17, his then boss called his mother to complain about his workplace performance.

It’s preferable to think that’s from a schoolchild bunking off than that there’s an actual 31 year old man who thinks that putting his wife’s number on a personnel form for work means his boss can call her to complain.

Excellent film made about this a few years ago by Channel 4 - I actually showed clips to GCSE Biology classes.

Ruminants produce methane from the bacteria in their digestive tracts, birds have grit in their crops to grind up seeds, so a possible ignition source.

But as far as I am aware there was no human/dinosaur overlap so how would humans know about them?

Bones.

Sdpbody · 19/11/2024 12:30

I think it is absolutely plausible that there were once dragons.

We had dinosaurs who flew.... This would account for dragons.

Seem perfectly reasonable that the aliens could have brought dragons with them

the80sweregreat · 19/11/2024 12:25

Yes and unicorns too!
The ' legends ' must have come from somewhere ?

I think they could have existed. DH says if a large animal ate stones/rock to help with digestion (if their digestive system was different) then theoretically the rocks rubbing together could create friction to make smoke/fire. Also they could have just had very hot breath that created steam.
Dinosaurs existed - huge massive things that sometimes flew, so I don’t see it as that absurd that dragons may have existed too.
The planet is ancient, anything could have happened in that time and a lot of cultures reference them.

Your DH is a legend.

Of course they exist those of us who live in Wales know this
This is my sons hatchling from this year

How big will that get?

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 19/11/2024 12:00

I'm pretty sure dragons in some capacity did once exist. I would bet my Cockatoo on it.

I’ve just remembered that I’ve got a dragon tattoo on my back so they must be real. How on earth did I forget that!

Thank you for the suggestions of books, dragon gifts and toasted marshmallows.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/11/2024 11:52

Considering all our birds are related back to dinosaurs, it is very possible that dragons did exist, probably not fire breathing but definely big flying animals of course it is possible

So ... pterodactyls and archaeopteryx?

Purplebunnie · 19/11/2024 11:50

@TheDefiant Firelizards, how I would love one of these especially as I doubt I would be able to impress a dragon

Loved the books as a teenager, they plot did start to get a bit samey in the very later books especially when her son continued on her legacy

TheKeatingFive · 19/11/2024 11:36

It is very interesting that so many cultures have stories and artwork that features dragons.

But they don't all look the same. There's dinosaur bones and various reptiles all over the world.

Chinese 'dragons' aren't the same as western 'dragons' (eg don't breath fire) - the fact that we use the same English word for a lóng in pinyin is presumably just because some westerner decided to do so,

Tallisker · 19/11/2024 11:47

Well, if they don't exist, how come everyone knows what they look like? Every child can draw a dragon, because they've seen pictures of them in books. But who illustrated the books and how did they know what they looked like?

Also, have you never seen Shrek? Completely believable Grin

And for the harder of thinking amongst us, all questions rhetorical, I'm just being silly.

LostTheMarble · 19/11/2024 11:47

Dragons are mentioned in the bible but dinosaurs are not.
So that would bunk that theory.

A few issues with bringing the Bible into the discussion. One, it was written at a time where there was far less factual information of the world. Secondly it was written by people in the Middle East where fossils of large lizards are less likely to be found, though they would have integrated older mythology from surrounding areas such as Egypt, Greece and pre-Christian Rome. In fact googling the biblical dragon reads very much like a hydra creature from mythology.
