To be annoyed at DMIL for putting a wet towel in the dustbin?

DS peed on the bathmat this evening - the in laws were kindly babysitting. When we got home we were told that DMIL had thrown away the bathmat - in the outside bin, drenched with both water and pee. Rubbish won't be collected for another week. I was livid at 1) the wastefulness as would have just washed in, and 2) why on earth she'd put it in wet, as whilst I'm not gonna eat my dinner from my outside bin I'd also rather not needlessly invite bacteria and mould to it. She said she put it in a bin bag if that helps.

DH is telling me I'm being needlessly irate and should 'just' be grateful for the babysitters - thoughts?!

DS is 4 and definitely doesn't routinely still have accidents so would have been a surprise I guess! And a regular Next bathmat, probably only a year old or something. I'd be pro taking it out the bin and washing it but should have added the point is we're away for a few days and they're housesitting / looking after the kids... we only found out about this on checking in with them after bedtime... so I'd be needing to convince the in laws to do the fishing out of the bin and washing! I'm not ungrateful for their babysitting although DMIL does continually play the "I insist that we babysit because I didn't live near family when I had kids and it was terrible" card which makes it hard to be anything but positive about their help/ say no once they know we have a wedding or possible plans etc. I think she just has more money than sense, not OCD as far as I can tell, but doesn't seem to understand that we can't afford to bin everything the kids make dirty even if she can!

This may just be as a result of being conditioned by my own mum to never put wet towels in laundry baskets so it just generally gives me the ick rather than being worried as such 😅

I put wet towels in laundry baskets. They get boil washed. I don't see the issue.

Rocknrollstar · 17/11/2024 10:38

You should simply be grateful that MiL was prepared to babysit and you got a night out.

Like a white pedal bin liner I use for the bathroom bins... not very thick/ waterproof etc imo but presumably she thought preferable to her touching the mat!

Easy to fish out and wash then!

And your MiL is nuts! What if the pee was on carpet?

Roosnoodles · 17/11/2024 10:30

Have you perhaps thought that you may of been embarrassed that your son peed on the bathmat so projected your embarrassment into anger of losing the bathmat or maybe your mil’s way of handling the situation made you feel like its something that she’s above? Just feels a bit much to be this angry over just losing a bathmat.

AInightingale · 17/11/2024 10:26

This thread is nuts. My son gave his toast and butter to the dog yesterday, we couldn't get it off her, the predictable happened and there was an 'episode' on the bathroom floor, incl. crap on the bathmat, scraped it off and put it in the wash with laundry cleanser...these things are washable, OP.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 17/11/2024 10:22

I'd have laughed, got the bath mat out of the bin and washed it. No drama.

Dontwearmysocks · 17/11/2024 10:11

Bit of an over reaction. Just get it out the bin and wash it.

@Kool4katz "Your MIL is weird. Does she have OCD as I can’t understand her bizarre behaviour otherwise?"

Not as weird as the person fretting about bacteria from a wet bath mat in her bin.....

Yep, both are strange behaviours alright. All my friends are in our 60’s/70’s and I can’t imagine any of them getting that hung up over a pee’d on bathmat. 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

pl228 · 17/11/2024 10:05

I don’t think I’d fish it out if it’s in a really flimsy bag - because passers by put dog shit in my bin and the entire bin stinks - even if it’s bagged, the smell remains in the plastic of the bin. So I wouldn’t be getting a bath mat out.

Just replace the bath mat and forget about it. It would obviously have been a better idea to put the bath mat in the washing machine, but she didn’t. She treated your stuff the way she’d treat hers presumably. No malice intended.

My thoughts are: I’d take it out the bin and sling it into the washing machine on a 90 degree wash. That’s it.

Edited

Well yes.

Why MIL did it & what others would do doesn't matter because Op can retrieve it, wash it & hey presto!

Everything as it was!

but if towels are wet and you arent doing a wash, they have to go in the laundry basket surely

No you let them dry first then put them in the laundry basket. Is your basket fabric? Mine is whcih is why I don’t put wet things in there.

CaninesC · 17/11/2024 09:44

YABU - to be this bothered by it. It is funny more than anything - that you can have so much life experience and think this is the most logical thing to do with a wet bath mat with a bit of wee on it. Just take it out of the bin and wash it.

FIL would've done something this incompetent, or worse. PIL were babysitting at our house and the dog (thankfully a small one) did a poo. FIL decided the best thing to do was to pick it up with toilet paper (not a poo bag, of which there were many available) and squash it into the handle of the compost tumbler. MIL presumably thought this was the best approach too. PIL had a dog for 12 years. DC was taking a nap at this point and no one was outside - so he could've just left (we were only gone 1.5 hours) it but no...

Who throws away a wet bathmat rather than washing it??? 🤷🏻‍♀️
A towel is meant to soak up liquids and be washed afterwards.

I’ve had mice poo on towels (don’t ask!) and just washed them on a hot wash. They’re fine.

I’m assuming you’ve removed it from the bin and washed it now?

Respectisnotoptional · 17/11/2024 09:43

Tourmalines · 17/11/2024 05:08

Your husband is right . For heavens sake just go and get it from the bin and wash it. Such a big drama over nothing.

Yep, much ado about nothing, another MIL in trouble over nothing vaguely important, I feel sorry for your MIL!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/11/2024 09:41

TBH it wouldn’t even have occurred to me to bin such a thing. WTF is a washing machine for? Would she also bin sheets if a child had wet itself during the night?

Hopelessinhomecounties · 17/11/2024 09:36

I’m with your husband. It’s one thing. She does it differently to you. But she was in charge at the time. Kind of her to babysit/tidy etc hope you haven’t thrown your toys out with her and are just venting here as if you had I would recommend a backtrack

MattSmithsBowTie · 17/11/2024 09:30

Yes I’d be annoyed she just threw it away instead of just dumping it in the bathtub to be washed later, don’t care what goes in the bin though, that’s a bit weird.

LadyGabriella · 17/11/2024 09:28

YABU. It got soiled, she threw it out. It’s not that offensive. What would you have said if she’d left a urine soaked mat in your house. Not worth getting worked up over. The outside wet bacteria thing is silly.

diddl · 17/11/2024 09:26

I think it's odd she binned it rather than just leave it in the bag but at least that means you can get it & wash it so really, no harm done at all!

I'd probably have just pushed it to the corner of the room for you to deal with!

Cherrysoup · 17/11/2024 09:23

Wet towels go over the ladder style radiator in the bathroom.

How odd to bin the bathmat. I’d just grab it out and wash it.

Loloj · 17/11/2024 09:22

Weird that she thought the solution was to bin it so I can understand you being mildly annoyed. Just get it out of the bin, un-bag and wash it on a hot wash. I wouldn’t dwell on it

PadstowGirl · 17/11/2024 09:18

Dpresst · 17/11/2024 05:56

It’s a pissy bath mat. Get over yourself.

This. You sound v v precious.

These people clearly did a great job raising your DH. They love and look after your children for free.
They aren't perfect, who is!, but honestly there's no need for this level of angst.
