To think that everyone faces storms in life, but eventually, the sun shines through?

I’ve been thinking a lot about life’s ups and downs and how, no matter how tough things get, there’s often a brighter time that follows. Do you believe that no matter what we go through, things eventually improve, and we find peace or happiness again? I’d love to hear others’ thoughts or experiences - do you feel like there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel?

Some of you are insufferable.

How cruel.

💐 to anyone on this thread going through dark times.

No, of course not, OP. Surely you watch the news? Thousands - maybe millions - of people across the world every year suffer horribly and there is no light at the end of their tunnel. And I know many people whose lives are a daily struggle with no prospect of changing.

I assume you just didn't put it very well. For instance, if you meant something akin to what Churchill meant when he said "When you're going through hell, keep going!" that would be good advice, in that, frankly what choice do you have? For some people things improve either because of their actions, resilience and determination or by good chance. But going through a bad time doesn't mean your luck will magically turn. Life isn't a Disney movie!

Indianajet · 16/11/2024 19:57

can't

Some of you are insufferable.

No many people are suffering.

They are not insufferable......you maybe have been fortunate so far in life - and good for you - but it seems you need to airbrush others misfortune to maintain your delusion.

I am shocked that you responded to people like this who have shared their personal experiences.

Indianajet · 16/11/2024 19:56

halloumidippers · 16/11/2024 17:26

I think it does. It's a mindset. You just get used to your new circumstances, it's up to you if you're happy.

That just isn't true - I would love to know how my 'mindset' could make me happy after losing my husband to lung cancer. There are some things that can never be put right - I caustic 'think myself happy'.

This response has really disgusted me. People have replied to you sincerely and in good faith. Why on earth would you reply like this? People did not deserve this obnoxious, dismissive response. You should be ashamed of it.

I send warm wishes to everyone who is enduring hardship at the minute.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 16/11/2024 18:40

OP I am optimistic by nature but in my professional life I have encountered literally thousands of people who have faced set back after set back and misfortune after misfortune. Some of it self inflicted. Much of it not. I can see that you are likely well intentioned, but in my opinion you are very misguided and plainly wrong in what you suggest. It’s wishful thinking and misplaced.

Enigma52 · 16/11/2024 18:36

SARA SHARIF, OP

READ the news.

Enigma52 · 16/11/2024 18:35

@SlightlyGoneOff agree! Bloody stupid post. And very naive.

No, just realistic. You think the sun shines through eventually for children who have been neglected and abused and then later murdered, never having had a loving bedtime story or cuddle? sadly that is the reality for too many children. It's unfair, devastating and heartbreaking to think about but I find your twee post quite insulting to those children and to other people who have suffered a lifetime of trauma and suffering.

Actually, your post was waaay more insufferable than any of the replies I’ve read. Only someone with very little life experience could think there’s a light at the end of everyone’s tunnel. What is it that has made you unable to acknowledge that some people’s suffering doesn’t have a happy ending?

Enigma52 · 16/11/2024 18:29

There was no light at the end of the tunnel for little Sara Sharif, was there?

In fact, yes there was.. her sad and tragic death, which finally set her free from the monsters who abused and eventually killed her.

Waterboatlass · 16/11/2024 18:25

Because they disagree with you? But your hypothesis that it'll all be alright in the end seems not to take into account degenerative or incurable illnesses, for one thing. It's facile bollocks. If you meant only a certain type of issue then you should have specified.

YesIReallyDidOK · 16/11/2024 18:25

I would love to have had the kind of life which would have made me think this. I would genuinely love to be this naive.

I'm actually a very optimistic person (far too optimistic than my circumstances have dictated!), but have a look around the rest of the world FFS. Read the room.

I was visited by our vicar after dh took his own life. She's a really great person but she chose to pray from Ecclesiastes... 'there is a time and a place for everything under heaven' etc (sorry from memory so may not be exact). I have never set foot voluntarily in a church service again. It wasn't my husbands time to die and to say that was really crass.

That’s awful. I’m so sorry that she did that to you. I’ve had three suicides close to me and it’s a pain like no other. I’m so sorry for your loss 💐

ThatKeenGuide · 16/11/2024 18:09

Some of you are insufferable.

Insufferable as in "don't agree with you?". Your OP, while well meaning (I hope), was really rather thoughtless.

For people who are currently in a very dark place, saying "there's always light at the end of the tunnel" is akin to telling someone with depression to cheer up.

That people are not currently able to be positive does not make them insufferable.

BeardofHagrid · 16/11/2024 18:20

Not for me it hasn’t :/ I have had a chronic illness for more than twenty years now and, because of other life events, things have only got worse and worse for me. During the summer, when it’s beautiful and warm, I feel moments of happiness, for the rest of the year I only know suffering.

Enigma52 · 16/11/2024 18:19

Sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel is a cancer ward.

Yes exactly this.

I think it depends on the storms you face.

For sure everyone experiences ups and downs and some people deal with those better than others.

My son died aged 18 from cancer. This is a storm that has no light at the end of the tunnel.

ThatKeenGuide · 16/11/2024 18:09

Some of you are insufferable.

Really? Insufferable? That's your take on people who are ground down by unwavering unbearably hard experiences in life?

Maybe use some of that light at the end of the tunnel to shine on yourself and reflect on your empathy and attitude.

TryingTheBestICan · 16/11/2024 18:16

Nope. My friend was mentally unwell due to domestic abuse, she had all the support in the world, suffered for years, then chose to end her life. Suicide rates are high. People still dying because NHS waiting lists are too long. 2 women a week murdered by their partners. People working themselves to the bone but still living a full life of poverty. Things don't always get better.

Why is that, OP?

minmooch · 16/11/2024 18:14

Some of you are insufferable.

You asked for people's thoughts and experiences. Did you expect everyone to agree with you?
